German minister to press Hegseth on arms supplies, missile deployment

BERLIN (Reuters) -German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius heads to Washington on Monday to meet U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, to seek clarity on American arms supplies to Ukraine, missile deployment plans and the future of U.S. troop levels in Europe.
Pistorius is likely to receive a warm reception as Europe's biggest economy recently emerged as a key player in NATO's largest military build-up since the Cold War, having for decades lagged behind in defence spending.
As European officials fret over a possible future attack from Russia and brace for a drawdown of U.S. forces, Germany loosened its constitutional debt brake to meet NATO's new core military spending target of 3.5% of national output by 2029.
The move will boost German defence spending to 162 billion euros ($189 billion) in 2029 from 95 billion euros in the draft budget for 2025.
At a meeting with Hegseth at the Pentagon, Pistorius will discuss Berlin's offer to pay for American Patriot air defence systems for Ukraine, a proposal made public by Chancellor Friedrich Merz weeks ago after private discussions failed to elicit a response from Washington.
On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump said he will send Patriot missiles to Ukraine. He did not give a number, but he said the United States would be reimbursed for their cost by the European Union.
Germany has already donated three Patriot units to Kyiv, as Ukraine endures some of the heaviest Russian attacks in recent weeks.
However, European allies remain uneasy about the new U.S. administration's unpredictable stance on arms supplies. On Tuesday, Trump said he had approved sending defensive weapons to Ukraine and was considering additional sanctions on Moscow, just days after the Pentagon halted shipments of critical arms to Ukraine.
Pistorius will also seek clarity on whether Washington remains committed to temporarily deploying long-range missiles to Germany from 2026, as agreed under former President Joe Biden.
The deployment would include systems such as Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of 1,800 kilometres (1,118 miles) and the developmental hypersonic weapon Dark Eagle with a range of around 3,000 km.
Russia has criticised the plans as a serious threat to its national security and dismissed NATO concerns that it could attack an alliance member.
Another key issue will be an ongoing review of the U.S. force posture worldwide that could lead to troop cuts in Europe where around 80,000 U.S. soldiers serve, including some 40,000 in Germany.
European allies are urging Washington to ensure any drawdown is coordinated to prevent capability gaps that might leave NATO members vulnerable to Russian aggression.

Porsche Hikes Prices Again Due to 'Market Conditions'

A Porsche being expensive is not news. These cars always have been, and always will be. But, recently, the automaker implemented price increases across its entire lineup, citing "market conditions." Initially brought to our attention by Road & Track , Porsche has since confirmed these price increases. "With our customers front of mind, we keep a regular watch on market conditions, absorbing costs where we can and making adjustments only when it's absolutely necessary to do so," a spokesperson said in a statement. "Where possible, we have taken steps to support our customers, but market conditions necessitate incremental adjustments to MSRP. The price adjustment encompasses all models and varies from model to model, from between 2.3 and 3.6 percent." Here are the previous and current prices for each Porsche base model. Model New Price Previous Price Increase 2025 718 Cayman $77,395 $74,795 3.5% 2026 911 Carrera $134,650 $129,950 3.6% 2026 Cayenne $91,950 $88,795 3.6% 2026 Macan $66,950 $65,350 2.4% 2026 Panamera $112,450 $108,550 3.6% 2026 Taycan $106,250 $102,550 3.6% Porsche also tells us, "market conditions necessitate incremental adjustments to individual option pricing and delivery fees from time to time." So, depending on what options your car has, the new price may be more than 3.6 percent higher than it was a few months ago. Porsche didn't blame tariffs specifically here, but it's one of a handful of volume automakers that doesn't make cars in the US. The company builds all its cars in Germany, except for the Cayenne, which is made in Slovakia, and in very small numbers in Malaysia for that market only. The Trump administration put a 25-percent tariff on imported automobiles and automobile parts in place back in April, on top of a preexisiting 2.5% import duty. Trump on Saturday threatened a 30-percent tariff on all goods from the EU . This, of course, would apply to all Porsche cars. Earlier this year, we reported that Porsche is considering starting US production . Obviously, its customers have long been used to paying premium prices for their cars, and while a 3.6 percent increase might not be a huge deal for 911, Taycan, and Panamera buyers, it could be an impediment to customers of less expensive, larger-volume models like the Cayenne and Macan. Porsche is in a precarious situation right now. Its sales are down globally—especially in China, where buyers are rejecting non-domestic automakers—and customer response to EVs like the Taycan and Macan Electric is less enthusiastic than the automaker hoped. US sales have remained strong, but buyers here aren't adopting EVs as quickly as everyone (including Porsche) thought they would, and tariffs are complicating everything. It just illustrates the rewriting of the automotive order. Up until recently, Porsche was the envy of the auto industry, wildly profitable and beloved by so many. That's still true today, but the picture is not as rosy in Stuttgart as it once was. 2026 Volkswagen ID.Buzz Review, Pricing, and Specs

Overview The 2026 Volkswagen EV may be a nostalgia play, but there's plenty of genuine practicality baked into this fully electric modern Microbus reinterpretation. Three rows of seating provide room for up to seven passengers, dual sliding side doors make for easy access, and there are eight USB power ports to ensure a charging democracy. Massive expanses of glass keep the interior vibe cheery and provide excellent outward sightlines. A single-motor rear-wheel-drive powertrain is standard, but a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup is available. The dual-motor model ramps up the Buzz's performance while only putting a mild dent in its EPA-estimated 234-mile max range. Now entering its second model year, the ID. Buzz still draws enough attention that you'll make new friends wherever you go. Expert Tip: If you want a three-row EV but the novelty factor turns you off, check out the Kia EV9 or the Hyundai Ioniq 9. What's New for 2026? Entering its second model year, the carries over with no major changes, but given its celebrity status, we can't rule out the possibility of special editions joining the lineup. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Volkswagen is expected to start around $62,000 and go up to $66,000 depending on the trim and options. Pro S $62,000 (est) Pro S Plus $66,000 (est) We'd go with the rear-wheel-drive Pro S Plus trim, as it adds plenty of equipment to justify the extra spend over the base Pro S. Features include the desirable 14-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo system, a head-up display, a 360-degree exterior camera system, power-sliding side doors, and a retractable tow hitch. The base model features a single, rear-mounted electric motor that makes 282 horsepower. A dual-motor, all-wheel-drive configuration, dubbed 4Motion in VW speak, with a combined 335 horsepower, is also offered. In our test drive of the all-wheel-drive we found that it offers spirited acceleration and a comfortable ride. The rear-wheel-drive version is a bit slower but otherwise drives similarly. It's quiet at lower speeds but can get a bit noisy on the highway. We weren't fans of the brake pedal's inconsistent feel, and the is quite heavy; fortunately, the placement of the battery pack under the floor means that handling still feels secure. 0–60-MPH Times In Comparison: While the doesn't yet have any direct competitors, the new Hyundai Ioniq 9, with its most powerful AWD motor configuration, jumped to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. View Exterior Photos Michael Simari | Car and Driver Towing and Payload Capacity When properly equipped, the rear-wheel-drive is rated to tow up to 2600 pounds, and the all-wheel-drive version can tow 3500 pounds. We were pleased to find that the 2025 Pro S Plus 4Motion delivered 78 MPGe in our real-world testing, beating its EPA estimate by 4 MPGe. MPGe stands for miles per gallon of gas equivalent, an EPA metric that estimates PHEV and EV vehicle fuel efficiency. For more information about the fuel economy, visit the EPA's website. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo First Row: The front seats are comfortable, provide fore and aft adjustment to fit drivers of any size, and are equipped with both heat and ventilation features. Adjustable armrests are a nice touch, as is the center console between the front seats that is removable or can be moved to the second row when equipped with captain's chairs. Door armrests are of average size but well-positioned for comfort Second Row: Buyers have a choice of either a bench seat or captain's chairs for the second row, though the latter reduces the passenger count to six. There's no shortage of leg, shoulder, or headroom with either version, thanks to the van's boxy design. Tables that fold out of the backrests of the front seats make a great place for rear-seat passengers to work, play, or set up snack service. Third Row: No worries about cramped third-row accommodations in the and even adults will find there's plenty of room to stretch out. Access is relatively easy via the large sliding doors, and the space is airy thanks to the large glass areas. Trump gives Russia 50 days to make Ukraine deal or face sanctions

US President Donald Trump told Russia on Monday to end its Ukraine war within 50 days or face massive new economic sanctions as he laid out plans for new infusions of weaponry for Kyiv via NATO. Trump said he was "very, very unhappy" with Vladimir Putin, underlining his insistence that his patience had finally snapped with the Russian leader's refusal to end his three-year-old invasion of Ukraine. "We're going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don't have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100 percent," Trump said during an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The 79-year-old added that they would be "secondary tariffs" that target Russia's remaining trade partners -- thereby seeking to cripple Moscow's ability to survive already sweeping Western sanctions. Trump and Rutte also unveiled a deal under which the NATO military alliance would buy arms from the United States -- including Patriot anti-missile batteries -- and then send them to Ukraine to help it battle Russia's invasion. "This is billions of dollars' worth of military equipment is going to be purchased from the United States, going to NATO... and that's going to be quickly distributed to the battlefield," Trump said. Rutte said Ukraine would get "massive numbers" of weapons under the deal, which is aimed at placating Trump's long-held complaints that the US is paying too much to aid Ukraine. However, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Trump's deadline, while "very positive," was too far into the future. "Fifty days is a very long time if we see that they are killing innocent civilians every day," Kallas said. - 'Tough guy' - Trump launched a bid at rapprochement with Putin shortly after starting his second term in January, as he sought to honor his election campaign promise to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours. His pivot towards Putin sparked fears in Kyiv that he was about to sell out Ukraine, especially after Trump and his team berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office in February. But Trump has indicated he is increasingly frustrated with Putin in recent weeks as the Russian leader, instead of halting his invasion, instead stepped up attacks to record levels. The US leader gave an intriguing personal insight into how First Lady Melania Trump had helped changed his thinking about Putin, a man for whom he formerly expressed admiration. "I go home, I tell the First Lady, 'you know, I spoke to Vladimir today, we had a wonderful conversation.'," Trump said. "And she said, 'Oh really? Another city was just hit.'" He added of Putin: "I don't want to say he's an assassin, but he's a tough guy." Trump said he had believed they had sealed a deal with Putin four times, only for them to fall through. The US president had last week teased that he would make a "major statement" on Russia on Monday. Washington has also U-turned from an announcement earlier this month that it would pause some arms deliveries to Kyiv, announcing on Sunday that it would send vital Patriot air defense systems. - 'Better late than never' - Trump's special envoy Keith Kellogg meanwhile arrived in Kyiv to meet Zelensky. The Ukrainian leader hailed the "productive meeting" and said he was "grateful" to Trump for his support. One Ukrainian soldier deployed in the war-scarred east of the country, who identified himself by his call sign Grizzly, welcomed Trump's promise of fresh air defense systems. "Better late than never," the 29-year-old told AFP. Russian forces meanwhile said on Monday they had captured new territory in eastern Ukraine with the seizure of two villages, one in the Donetsk region and another in the Zaporizhzhia region. Its forces also killed at least three civilians in the eastern Kharkiv and Sumy regions on Monday, regional Ukrainian officials announced. In Kyiv, Zelensky also proposed a major political shake-up, recommending economy minister Yulia Svyrydenko take over as the country's new prime minister. Svyrydenko said on social media that Ukraine was facing a "crucial time." burs-dk/sms
