Stock Market News Review: SPY, QQQ Near Record-Highs on Flexible Tariff Deadlines, EU Trade Concessions

Thursday was another green day for the stock market, as both the S&P 500 (SPX) and the Nasdaq 100 (NDX) closed near their respective all-time highs, shrugging off a lower revision to U.S. GDP.
Confident Investing Starts Here:
GDP is now projected to fall by 0.5% during the first quarter, down from the prior estimate for a 0.2% decline. While it was known that a surge in imports would lead to lower GDP, consumer spending growth was revised lower to 0.5% from 1.2% amid rising economic uncertainty driven by tariffs.
On the trade front, White House economic advisor Stephen Miran expects the U.S. to push back the July 9 trade deal deadline for countries ' negotiating in good faith.' Miran also said that President Trump's baseline 10% tariff will either remain in place or be slightly lower for countries that ink a deal.
What's more, the European Union is close to finalizing its plan to combat U.S. tariffs ahead of its July 9 deadline. While earlier reports said that the bloc was preparing retaliatory tariffs, the Wall Street Journal said today that it may consider lowering tariffs on certain imported U.S. goods and reduce non-tariff countermeasures while increasing imports of items like liquefied gas. Trump had previously said that the EU was formed to 'screw' the U.S. on trade.
Following the Israel-Iran truce, the extent of the damage to Iran's nuclear program was widely disagreed upon. Some news publications published leaked data from U.S. intelligence documents that showed Iran's nuclear progress was only pushed back by a few months. President Trump once again reiterated that the damage resulted in the complete destruction of the program while sending shots at the reporters responsible for publishing the leaked data.
'FAKE NEWS REPORTERS FROM CNN & THE NEW YORK TIMES SHOULD BE FIRED, IMMEDIATELY!!! BAD PEOPLE WITH EVIL INTENTIONS!!!' said Trump on Truth Social this morning.
Finally, housing data showed an encouraging signal for the market. May's pending home sales increased by 1.8% month-over-month, above the expectation for a 0.1% jump and staging a recovery from April's 6.3% drop. 'Consistent job gains and rising wages are modestly helping the housing market,' said NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun. 'Hourly wages are increasing faster than home prices.' That's a good sign for the stock market, as consumers wouldn't purchase homes if they weren't financially stable with a positive outlook on the economy.
The S&P 500 closed with a 0.80% gain while the Nasdaq 100 returned 0.94%.

Glastonbury slams Bob Vylan's 'death to' Israel chant: 'Crossed a line'

GLASTONBURY, England − Glastonbury organizers say they're appalled by onstage chanting against the Israeli military during a performance by the punk-rap duo Bob Vylan, saying the music festival was no place for antisemitism or incitement to violence. During a show on Saturday, June 28, the duo chanted "Death, death, to the IDF" in apparent reference to the Israel Defense Forces, the formal name of the Israeli military. British police said they were considering whether to launch an investigation after artists at Glastonbury made anti-Israel comments on stage, without naming Bob Vylan. "Video evidence will be assessed by officers to determine whether any offences may have been committed that would require a criminal investigation," Avon and Somerset Police in western England, where the festival is held, said on X. A post shared by Glastonbury Festival (@glastofest) Festival organizers criticized the chanting by Bob Vylan, made up of guitarist and singer Bobby Vylan and drummer Bobbie Vylan, their stage names. "Their chants very much crossed a line, and we are urgently reminding everyone involved in the production of the festival that there is no place at Glastonbury for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence," the festival said in a statement shared on Instagram. The Israeli Embassy in Britain condemned the "inflammatory and hateful rhetoric expressed" at the festival. Bob Vylan's band members did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment. Their show on the festival's West Holts stage took place just before controversial Irish rap trio Kneecap played to a huge crowd, leading chants against British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and also taking aim at Israel. During the show, frontman Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh accused Israel of committing war crimes, saying: "There's no hiding it." Known by the stage name Mo Chara, he was charged with a terrorism offence last month for allegedly displaying a flag in support of Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah at a concert. He has denied the charge. Senior members of Starmer's government also criticized the chants by Bob Vylan. Health Secretary Wes Streeting said it was appalling that the comments had been made on stage, adding that he was also appalled by violence committed by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank. "I'd also say to the Israeli Embassy, get your own house in order in terms of the conduct of your own citizens and the settlers in the West Bank," Streeting told Sky News. "I wish they'd take the violence of their own citizens toward Palestinians more seriously." Political commentator Ash Sarkar said it was typical of punk musicians to spark controversy. "Don't book punk bands if you don't want them to do punk stuff," said Sarkar, a contributing editor to Novara Media, a leftist media organization. Contributing: Sophie Royle, Reuters

Trump says he has group of ‘very wealthy people' to buy TikTok, predicts China will approve deal

WASHINGTON — President Trump said in a Fox News interview broadcast on Sunday that he had found a buyer for the TikTok short-video app, which he described as a group of 'very wealthy people' whose identities he will reveal in about two weeks. Trump made the remarks in an interview on Fox News' 'Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo' program. He said the deal he is developing would probably need China's approval to move forward and he predicted Chinese President Xi Jinping would likely approve it. A deal had been in the works this spring that would have spun off TikTok's US operations into a new US-based firm, majority-owned and operated by US investors, but it was put on hold after China indicated it would not approve it following Trump's announcements of steep tariffs on Chinese goods. A 2024 US law required TikTok to stop operating by January 19 unless ByteDance had completed divesting the app's U.S. assets or demonstrated significant progress toward a sale. Trump described the potential TikTok buyer as a group of group of 'very wealthy people.'
