(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Pahang ruler Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah today repeated his call for a countrywide ban on e-cigarettes and vapes. Al-Sultan Abdullah said the use of vapes should be banned as a whole given its prevalence among the younger generation and the adverse effects on health, Bernama reported. 'Vaping should be banned completely. We must not be lenient, it will only cause further harm to our people,' he said, noting that the Pahang government had already taken steps to implement such a ban. In urging the federal government to ban e-cigarettes and vapes last November, the sultan had described them as a gateway of sorts to drug addiction. Since then, several state governments have decided to enforce a ban on vape sales, following in the footsteps of Johor and Kelantan which implemented such prohibitions in 2016 and 2015, respectively. They include Terengganu, Perlis and Kedah, while the Pahang state government has moved to ban the use of vapes as a whole. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Cabinet working on curbing amphetamine Type Stimulant abuse, Yeoh says

KOTA BARU: The issue of addiction to Amphetamine Type Stimulants (ATS) is a subject of focus and discussion at the Cabinet level, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh says. She stated that the government is collaborating closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to curb the online sale of the drug. "The current trend shows that primary school pupils are starting to get involved with ATS. Some of them gain access to it through online sales, including via WhatsApp and other digital platforms. "I urge parents to monitor their children's smartphone use. We can't allow them to use handphones without supervision," she said after a working visit to the Kota Baru Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre (Puspen) here on Thursday (July 3). She said the ministry will continue to help young people involved in drug abuse to get voluntary treatment at Puspen, urging parents to immediately contact Puspen if they notice behavioural changes in their children. Hannah said that according to the 2024 National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) statistics, 117,000 individuals aged between 15 and 39 were found to be involved in drug and substance abuse, with Kelantan recording the highest rate of addiction. "I had the chance to speak with several clients here (Puspen Kota Baru). Most of them are still young, some as young as 17 and started using drugs when they were in primary school. "This trend is alarming, but I am impressed to hear first-hand that the treatment at Puspen has helped clients to recover and rebuild their lives," she said. Hannah, who also met with the clients' parents, urged the public to be more open in seeking early intervention before addiction becomes more severe. She noted that the drug rehabilitation success rate at Puspen has now reached 79%, but stressed that the real challenge is to ensure they do not return to the old networks associated with substance abuse. "It is crucial that they do not reconnect with their old circles. Even after using drugs for over 10 years, with awareness and support, full recovery is possible," she said, adding that young people who need help can voluntarily enter rehab centres. She said the ministry is also working closely with AADK to create awareness through various platforms, including video screenings at major cinemas such as TGV. "We want young people to know they don't have to go through this alone. Help is available, and support is there," she added. - Bernama

Stop normalising immorality in the name of personal freedom, says religious affairs minister

Mohd Na'im expresses concern over the alarming rise in HIV cases among students, revealing that 1,091 students from institutions of higher learning were diagnosed with the virus between 2020 and 2024, including 222 new cases last year. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (July 3): The act of normalising immoral behaviour in the name of personal freedom must be stopped, and society must come together to restore moral and spiritual values, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar. He expressed concern over the alarming rise in HIV cases among students, revealing that 1,091 students from institutions of higher learning were diagnosed with the virus between 2020 and 2024, including 222 new cases last year. 'This data is heartbreaking. Most cases involve teenagers aged 18 to 19. As the minister responsible for religious affairs, I am deeply troubled by this growing trend. 'Youths must preserve their dignity and hold firmly to moral values. Religion is not just knowledge to be learned, but a guide for daily life. Live by principles, not by following the crowd,' he said in a Facebook post. Mohd Na'im stressed that education, awareness and enforcement must go hand in hand to address the issue effectively. He called on religious agencies, NGOs and educational institutions to join forces to protect the country's future generation. The statistics were disclosed by Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni during a press conference after launching the 2025 Media Roundtable Conference on Harm Reduction in Kuala Lumpur last Tuesday. Lukanisman also acknowledged the challenges faced by minors in accessing HIV self-test kits and follow-up treatment, due to the absence of legal provisions allowing screening without parental consent. – Bernama HIV Mohd Na'im moral normalising self-test spiritual values students
