Soap Box Derby gives kids chance to shine in Salem

Yahoo07-06-2025
SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – The Soap Box Derby Race happened in Salem Saturday morning.
Quakertown Super Kids held their annual race on Broadway Avenue.
Twenty-one racers rode in double derby cars, all controlled by ghost drivers.
The winner and two picks will go to the National Soap Box Derby.
'These kids, a lot of them couldn't participate in any other type of sport. We have one little boy in a wheelchair, we have two children that just recovered from cancer. All of them have some kind of disability and they can't always participate in other types of sports. This is really exciting for them, it's a big deal,' said Jan Keene, race director.
The National Soap Box Derby will take place July 19 at Derby Downs in Akron.
Saturday's Soap Box Derby happened alongside the Salem Super Cruise, which is happening through Sunday.

Paul Pierce Doubles Down On Wild Take; Claims He's A Better Pure Scorer Than Jordan, LeBron, And Durant

Paul Pierce Doubles Down On Wild Take; Claims He's A Better Pure Scorer Than Jordan, LeBron, And Durant originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Former NBA star Paul Pierce has dished out some sizzling hot takes over the years, and he was at it again on Thursday. Pierce claimed he was probably the best pure scorer in the history of the NBA on Speak, and received a lot of pushback for that. Advertisement If you'd thought that would lead to Pierce changing his mind, though, you'd be mistaken. The 47-year-old doubled down, picking himself as the better pure scorer over the likes of Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Kevin Durant, via Speak. Q: "Paul Pierce or Michael Jordan?" Paul Pierce: "I can score in more ways than Michael Jordan." Q: "Paul Pierce or Allen Iverson?" Pierce: "I can score in more ways than Allen Iverson." Q: "Paul Pierce or Kevin Durant?" Pierce: "That's close. I think I got a little more post-game than Kevin. We got a lot of the same arsenal, but I got him a little bit." Q: "Paul Pierce or Steph Curry?" Advertisement Pierce: "Oh yeah, I can do more offensively than Steph." Q: "Paul Pierce or James Harden?" Pierce: "My middy is better than James'. My post-game is better than James'. About even on threes, going to the rack. Paul Pierce." Q: "Paul Pierce or [Tracy McGrady]?" Pierce: "Now that one was close. Wow. Man, T-Mac like, he can post-up; he can do a lot of things, down screen, off the dribble. Damn. I got to the line more than him. I'm taking me." Q: "Last one. Paul Pierce or LeBron James?" Pierce: "This is not even a conversation." It's true that Pierce could do a lot of different things well when it came to scoring. There were no real holes in his game, and he finished his career with an average of 19.7 points per game. He averaged 25 or more points in five separate seasons, which is quite impressive. Advertisement All that said, Pierce's all-around abilities didn't translate to him becoming one of the very best scorers in NBA history. He never won a scoring title in his career and didn't manage to shoot 50% from the field in any of his 19 seasons either. So, despite having that all-around game, Pierce wasn't an all-time great volume scorer and wasn't very efficient either. At the end of the day, that's what really matters. Jordan, for example, won a record 10 scoring titles during his storied career and shot over 50% from the field in six seasons. Durant, meanwhile, has won four scoring titles and has failed to shoot over 50% from the field in just five seasons in a career that has spanned nearly two decades. Even James, whom Pierce dismissed, has gone down as a better scorer than him. The 21-time All-Star is the NBA's all-time leading scorer and has averaged at least 25 points in 20 seasons. He has also shot at least 50% from the field in 14 of his 22 seasons. Advertisement Ultimately, it's your production that matters. This conversation is similar to the one about who has the better "bag?" James dismissed the "no bag" talk recently by hilariously stating he has 50 billion points. You can try to diminish his scoring prowess all you want, but the numbers don't lie. Details emerge from Browns rookie Quinshon Judkins' domestic violence, battery arrest

Browns rookie running back Quinshon Judkins' arrest occurred Saturday after police had been called for a 'delayed battery' and then 'determined a battery had occurred,' a Fort Lauderdale Police Department Media Relations Unit spokesperson told ESPN. Police officers arrived at a location on West Cypress Creek Road around 9 a.m., spoke with the victim and then 'made contact' with Judkins, 21, to arrest him, Sergeant David Soika told the outlet in his statement. Advertisement It's unclear where Judkins, the former Ohio State star who was drafted in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, was located when police spoke with the victim, or when the alleged incident occurred. Judkins was charged with a misdemeanor battery (domestic) crime, according to the Soika's statement, and his inmate log described the charge as 'touch or strike/battery/domestic viol[ence].' Quinshon Judkins was arrested July 12. Zac Jackson/X He was still being held in the Broward County main jail as of early Sunday afternoon, with his bond listed at $2,500, according to his inmate log. In a statement Saturday night, a Browns spokesman told the Akron Beacon Journal that the team was 'aware and gathering information.' AP An official from the NFL told the outlet that the league is 'aware of the matter but will decline further comment.' Judkins, selected at No. 37 overall after helping the Buckeyes win the College Football Playoff championship last season, was positioned near the top of the Browns' running back depth chart entering training camp — with Nick Chubb leaving for a one-year, $2.5 million deal in Houston and Jerome Ford the only true competition for Judkins. AP Following two seasons with Ole Miss, Judkins transferred to Ohio State in 2024 and collected 1,060 yards — along with 14 touchdowns — during his final collegiate season. Advertisement 'He brings the brand of football that we want, AFC North 'back,'' assistant general manager and vice president of player personnel Glenn Cook said of the 5-foot-11, 225-pound running back following the draft, according to the team website. 'Exceptionally strong, physical, tough, productive three-down guy.' Judkins still hadn't signed his rookie deal with the Browns.
