Red Sea Film Foundation brings four supported films to 78th Cannes
The Red Sea Film Foundation has announced its official participation in the 78th Cannes Film Festival, with four films backed by the Red Sea Fund, Red Sea Souk and Red Sea Labs featured in this year's lineup. The foundation's presence underscores its ongoing commitment to supporting and promoting cinema from Arab, Asian and African regions on the global stage.
Among the highlights is Promised Sky, the latest feature by Tunisian filmmaker Erige Sehiri, which has been selected to open the Un Certain Regard section. Set in Tunisia and inspired by real events, the film explores the intertwining lives of three women—Marie, an Ivorian pastor and former journalist; Naney, a young mother in search of hope; and Jolie, a student grappling with family pressure. Their delicate bond is put to the test when a young orphan enters their lives, revealing the strength and fragility of solidarity in a society fraught with uncertainty.
Egyptian director Morad Mostafa makes his Cannes debut with Aisha Can't Fly Away, which will also compete in Un Certain Regard. The film paints a raw portrait of life on the fringes of Cairo through the story of Aisha, a young Sudanese caretaker living in the impoverished Ain Shams district. Faced with growing danger, she turns to Zuka, a local gang leader, for protection, navigating a world shaped by desperation and survival.
Japanese filmmaker Momoko Seto's Dandelion's Odyssey offers a stark contrast in genre and tone. The film follows four plant-like friends—Dendelion, Baraban, Léonto and Taraxa—who survive Earth's destruction by nuclear catastrophe and embark on a cosmic journey in search of a new home. Blending science fiction and environmental themes, the film is a poetic reflection on survival, identity, and belonging.
Completing the lineup is Life After Siham, a deeply personal documentary by Egyptian director Namir Abdel-Messeeh. In the aftermath of his mother's passing, Abdel-Messeeh uses filmmaking as a way to preserve her memory and navigate his grief. The film documents his emotional journey, including his complex relationship with his father, ultimately transforming a personal loss into a profound meditation on love, memory, and the healing power of cinema.
In addition to the screenings, the Red Sea Film Foundation will host activities at the Saudi Pavilion at the Marché du Film, including a 'Meet the Red Sea Team' panel on May 16.

‘Tetes brulees' to make MENA premiere at Amman International Film Festival

After its world premiere at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, where it received two Special Mentions in the Generation 14plus section, Têtes brûlées is heading to Jordan for its MENA premiere at the sixth edition of the Amman International Film Festival. The film will screen on July 6 at 10:00 p.m. at Taj Cinema and again on July 9 at 8:00 p.m. at the Royal Film Commission. A Belgian production infused with Tunisian influences, Têtes brûlées is a coming-of-age drama centred on 12-year-old Eya, who struggles to cope with the sudden loss of her older brother Younès. Bound by an unbreakable connection, Eya finds herself navigating a structured and emotional grieving process, leaning on her creativity, resilience, and Younès' close friends to make sense of her loss and move forward. The film has also garnered critical acclaim, with Aurore Engelen of Cineuropa describing it as 'a film of few words but many gestures—hands reaching out, arms embracing and consoling.' She commended Zellama's sensitive direction, noting her ability to 'capture both the strength and fragility of these moments.' Written and directed by Belgian-Tunisian-Danish filmmaker Maja Ajmia Zellama, Têtes brûlées is produced by Komoko, with co-productions by Quetzalcoatl and 1080 Films. Zellama, a graduate of the LUCA School of Arts, is also the co-founder and president of ASBL Bledarte, a Brussels-based organisation dedicated to empowering immigrant youth through art and culture. The film's production team includes producers Marc Goyens and Nabil Ben Yadir, cinematographer Grimm Vandekerckhove, editor Dieter Diependaele, production designer Eve Martin, casting director Marie McCourt, and sound designer David Vranken. Red Sea Fund awards nine projects post-production grants in 2025
To date, the Red Sea Fund, has supported over 280 film projects, including titles that have gone on to screen at major international festivals and reach wide audiences. The Red Sea Fund, part of the Red Sea Film Foundation, has announced nine winning projects for its first cycle of 2025 post-production grants, supporting distinctive films as they complete their final production stages. Selected projects span a diverse range of countries across the Arab world and Asia, including Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Malaysia, France, Turkey and Tunisia. The grants are designed to help these films prepare for international distribution and to promote richer, more varied storytelling from the region to audiences around the globe. Among the recipients are Promised Sky by Erige Sehiri, produced across France, Tunisia and Qatar; FUXI: Joy in Four Chapters by Jiongjiong Qiu, a collaboration between Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, France and Saudi Arabia; and Mother Bhumi by Malaysian director Keat Aun Chong. Other selected titles include Pangku (On Your Lap) from Indonesia, Ghost School from Pakistan, A Winner is Seen at the Start from Kazakhstan, The Baronnesses from Belgium, France and Luxembourg, Round 13 from Tunisia, and Veha from Turkey. Commenting on this announcement, Emad Eskandar, Head of the Red Sea Fund, said: 'These nine projects embody the richness of captivating narratives from the Arab world and Asia, and we are proud to be part of their creative journey. Last year, we expanded our scope to include Asian projects, driven by our deep belief in the immense potential of filmmakers across the continent. Since its inception, the Red Sea Fund has backed more than 280 film projects, many of which have achieved recognition at major international festivals. Among its recent successes are HOBAL, which premiered at the fourth Red Sea International Film Festival and drew over 190,000 viewers in Saudi cinemas, and The Tale of Daye's Family, the opening film of the same festival edition that was later selected for the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival.
