Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was almost the first one to cross the finish line, but Norris managed to beat him by half a second and grab the pole. But Leclerc is glad to be able to start on the front row.
Liam Lawson, Gabriel Bortoleto impress in Austrian Qualifying
Lando Norris' pole is McLaren's first pole in Austria after 25 years. Also, it was not just Ferrari's Charles Leclerc who put up an impressive show in the Austrian Qualifying on Saturday. His new teammate, Lewis Hamilton, also grabbed the fourth position.
He was followed by Mercedes driver George Russell in fifth position.
Talking about claiming second place on the grid, Leclerc told Formula1.com, 'I'm very pleased. It has been a long time since we started on the front row. It has been a difficult season overall, but the team kept pushing. We brought some new parts this weekend that have made a difference. We normally have a better car in the race than in Qualifying, so hopefully we can put some pressure on McLaren tomorrow.'
However, it was Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson who did the unimaginable by beating his old Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen to take the sixth position in the Qualifying. Verstappen settled for the seventh position. He was followed by Kick Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto in eighth place. Bortoleto also deserves praise for getting through Q3 for the first time while still being a rookie.
Promising Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli couldn't do well in FP1 and FP2 but grabbed seventh spot in FP3.

However, he again had to settle for ninth place in the Qualifying. He will be followed by Alpine's Pierre Gasly in tenth place on the grid for the Austrian Grand Prix final on Sunday.
Red flags were brought out as a small patch of grass was seen on fire at the start/finish straight in Q2. The Qualifying started five minutes late as the free practice session ended slightly late due to a crash at Turn 3 at the end of the session.

F1: Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli Handed Three-Place Grid Penalty At Silverstone After Austrian GP Mishap
Last Updated: Kimi Antonelli got a three-place grid penalty for the British Grand Prix after colliding with Max Verstappen in Austria. Antonelli apologized, and Verstappen accepted. Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli has been hit with a three-place grid penalty for the upcoming British Grand Prix after the stewards found him at fault for a collision with Max Verstappen on Lap 1 in Austria yesterday. After starting from P9 on the grid, Antonelli locked up the rear brakes of his Mercedes in Turn 3, causing him to hit Verstappen's Red Bull, which put both cars out of the race. Antonelli 💥 Verstappen: Here's the incident 🎥 #F1 #AustrianGP — Formula 1 (@F1) June 29, 2025 Both were summoned to the stewards over the incident, where the verdict was that Antonelli was 'fully at fault" for what happened, though it was also acknowledged that the move had been a 'result of the evasive action after locking up". Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli after the accident ☹️ — Laura 🦋 (@formuLau16) June 29, 2025 Given that the teenager was unable to continue in the race, the penalty decided upon was a three-place grid drop for the next race, that being Silverstone next weekend on July 4-6, as well as two penalty points on his licence. Speaking after his early exit from the race at the Red Bull Ring, Antonelli said: 'I just apologised straight away. I recognise it's all on me and I just feel sorry because I ended my race, but I ended his as well." 'I think I had a normal start, then going up to T3 I was just trying to maintain the position. I didn't want to do anything because I knew there was no space in front, but then when I hit the brake, I locked the rear, and I got caught by that. 'When I locked the rear, I lost the car, and then I had to first avoid the Racing Bull [of Lawson], but then I just couldn't stop the car. Unfortunately, I hit Max, and I just feel very sorry towards the team and him, of course. Verstappen was seemingly accepting of Antonelli's apology. Verstappen pai compreensivo leva de boa o acidente e revela que Antonelli foi até a Red Bull pedir desculpas'Acho que todos os pilotos já cometeram um erro assim" — Estagiário da F1 (@EstagiariodaF1) June 29, 2025 The World Champion, reflecting on the incident, said, 'Unlucky, I guess. It is what it is. I spoke quickly to Kimi, and he came with me to the hospitality. I think every driver has made a mistake like that. No one does that on purpose as well, so for me, that's not a big deal," said Verstappen post-race. First Published: June 30, 2025, 13:38 IST

F1 Standings 2025: Updated drivers & constructors Formula 1 leaderboard after Austrian GP
Briton Lando Norris held off a race-long challenge from his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri to win the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday, cutting down the Australian's lead and lifting his Formula 1 Championship hopes with the win. The McLaren duo fought for the lead early on, with the Championship leader briefly getting into the lead before Norris took the position back. A rash lunge by Piastri nearly caused a collision soon after. Piastri continues to lead the Championship with 216 points after the Austrian GP. The Australian has won five races this season, starting from his second career Formula 1 win at the Chinese Grand Prix. Norris moved past the 200 points mark as well and closed the gap between the two after taking 25 points on Sunday. He sits with 201 points. More than ever this season, the title fight focuses on the two McLarens after defending champion Max Verstappen was hit by Kimi Antonelli on the opening lap, ending his race. Verstappen is still third but now 61 points off the lead and has 155 points. Charles Leclerc was third for his third podium finish in four races, with his Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton fourth in Austria. George Russell, who won the last race in Canada, was fifth for Mercedes and Liam Lawson sixth for Racing Bulls in his best result of the season. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin held off Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto for seventh. The second Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg was ninth, and Esteban Ocon finished 10th for Haas. In the leaderboard, Russell finds himself in fourth with just nine points behind Verstappen. He is followed by Leclerc in fifth and Hamilton in sixth. (Both tables updated after the Austrian GP on Sunday, 29 June)

'Alpine Still Finds A Way To F**k Me Over': Oscar Piastri's Explosive Rant At Austrian GP
Last Updated: Oscar Piastri's potential win at the Austrian GP was thwarted by Franco Colapinto, who ran him off the track. Piastri remains 15 points ahead in the Drivers' Championship. No matter how hard we try sometimes, the past comes back to haunt us in the present. McLaren's Oscar Piastri most definitely would agree currently, as his former team, Alpine, came back (after three years of him leaving) to inadvertently snatch away what could have been a potential win at the Austrian GP yesterday. During the Austrian Grand Prix, the Australian was involved in a heated battle with his team-mate Lando Norris, amid traffic, for the lead of the race and the potential win. And this is when Alpine's Franco Colapinto came into the picture to ruin it all for him. Piastri, who was hot on the heels of Norris after the final pit, was run off the track by Colapinto — the rookie was battling with Yuki Tsunoda to avoid finishing last — on Lap 55, thereby costing Piastri the potential win. For all the trouble, what seemingly pissed fans and followers alike more was that the Argentine was merely handed a five-second penalty. Two laps later, the championship leader was blocked by Pierre Gasly into Turn 1, adding insult to injury as he attempted to catch Norris. In a rare moment of frustration for the 24-year-old, Piastri lamented over team radio. 'Alpine still manages to find a way to f**k me over all these years later," a frustrated Piastri was heard stating. Thankfully for Piastri, the win wasn't too costly (at least immediately), since he still holds a slender 15-point lead over Norris in the Drivers' Championship standings. Third-placed (and defending four-time champion) Max Verstappen, on the other hand, felt nothing but pure frustration on the same day. Coming in at P7 after a dismal qualifying, the odds were already stacked up for the Dutchman to will his way back into the Championship race with a potential win yesterday. But, all hell would break loose in the very first lap for Verstappen, who got caught up in an unfortunate lock-up with Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who crashed into the Dutchman within the first turn of the race, ruling them both out effectively.
