Pakistan remains among worst passports in Henley's latest ranking

Pakistan's passport continues to languish near the bottom of the Henley Passport Index 2025 – fourth-worst – ahead of Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan, according to the latest global rankings released on Tuesday.
Singapore retained the title of the world's most powerful passport, with visa-free access to 193 destinations out of 227 globally, according to the index.
The index includes data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and ranks all the world's passports based on the number of destinations their holders can enter without a prior visa.
Asian nations continue to lead the global mobility race, with Japan and South Korea sharing 2nd place, each granting their citizens access to 190 destinations visa-free.
A contingent of European countries occupied the rest of the Top 5. Seven EU passports share 3rd place – Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain, all with access to 189 destinations.
UAE was ranked 8th with a mobility score of 184, and the only country in the Middle East in the top 10. The UAE continues to be a standout among the top risers, shooting up 34 places over the last 10 years from 42nd to 8th place.
Last month, Pakistan and the UAE signed a visa exemption agreement for diplomatic and official passports.
Pakistani passport fourth-worst in the world: Henley Passport Index
Dr Christian H. Kaelin, the inventor of the passport index concept, said the latest Henley Passport Index had revealed an increasingly competitive landscape in global mobility.
'The consolidation we're seeing at the top underscores that access is earned – and must be maintained– through active and strategic diplomacy,' she was quoted as saying in the press release issued by Henley on Tuesday.
'Nations that proactively negotiate visa waivers and nurture reciprocal agreements continue to rise, while the opposite applies to those that are less engaged in such efforts.'
Biggest movers and shakers
The UK and US have each dropped a place in the global passport rankings since January, continuing a long-term downward trend.
Once the most powerful passports in the world – the UK in 2015 and the US in 2014 – they now rank 6th and 10th, respectively.
The UK currently has visa-free access to 186 destinations, while the US trails with 182.
Notably, the US is now on the brink of exiting the Top 10 altogether for the first time in the index's 20-year history.
India has recorded the largest jump in ranking over the past six months, climbing eight places from 85th to 77th, while Saudi Arabia has made the biggest gain in visa-free access, adding four destinations since January. Its total now stands at 91, lifting the kingdom four places to 54th.

Oil prices edge lower with trade talks in focus

LONDON: Oil prices fell for the fourth consecutive session on Wednesday, as investors assessed trade developments including a U.S. tariff deal with Japan ahead of a U.S. stocks data announcement. Brent crude futures were down 50 cents, or 0.7%, at $68.09 a barrel as of 1119 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were down 47 cents, or 0.7%, at $64.84 per barrel. Both benchmarks lost about 1% in the previous session after the EU said it was considering countermeasures against U.S. tariffs. U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the U.S. and Japan had struck a trade deal that included a 15% tariff on U.S. imports from Japan. 'The slide (in prices) of the past three sessions appears to have abated but I don't expect much of an upward impetus from news of the U.S.-Japan trade deal as the hurdles and delays being reported in talks with the EU and China will remain a drag on sentiment,' said Vandana Hari, founder of oil market analysis provider Vanda Insights. The European Commission plans to submit counter-tariffs on 93 billion euros ($109 billion) of U.S. goods for approval to EU members, while the Commission's primary focus is to achieve a negotiated outcome with the United States to avert 30% U.S. tariffs. Investors are awaiting U.S. oil inventory data from the Energy Information Administration later on Wednesday. In another bullish sign for the crude market, the U.S. energy secretary said on Tuesday that the U.S. would consider sanctioning Russian oil to end the war in Ukraine. The EU on Friday agreed its 18th sanctions package against Russia, lowering the price cap for Russian crude. On the physical supply side, Azeri BTC crude oil loadings from the Turkish port of Ceyhan resumed on Wednesday, after increased checks linked to a contamination issue delayed loadings in recent days, several industry sources told Reuters.

Indian rupee dips but firmer yuan, exporter dollar sales cushion losses

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee ended marginally weaker on Wednesday with the strength in the Chinese yuan and exporter activity helping the currency hold above a psychologically important support level. The rupee closed at 86.4075 per U.S. dollar, down slightly from its close at 86.3675 in the previous session but managing to hold above the 86.50 support level. The offshore Chinese yuan rose to a near three-week high while the dollar index was a tad lower at 97.4. Dollar sales from a large private bank and exporter activity also helped the rupee contain its losses on the day, alongside positive regional cues, a trader at a state-run bank said. India's benchmark equity indexes, the BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 closed higher by about 0.6% each, tracking gains in global equities that were buoyed by hopes of easing trade tensions after a deal between the U.S. and Japan. 'Equity markets globally are rallying on the view that deals reduce uncertainty,' ING said in a note. Indian rupee weakens slightly, broad dollar softness cushions pressure U.S. President Donald Trump also announced a trade agreement with the Philippines, released terms of a previous deal with Indonesia on Tuesday and said that EU representatives were coming for trade negotiations on Wednesday. Officials from China and the U.S. are also expected to meet next week to discuss an extension to the deadline for negotiating a trade deal. For India, though, the prospects of a trade deal before the August 1 deadline have dimmed, with talks deadlocked over tariff cuts on key agricultural and dairy products. Foreign portfolio outflows and the lack of an outcome on trade negotiations have maintained pressure on the rupee, said Dilip Parmar, a foreign exchange research analyst at HDFC Securities.

Indian benchmarks shares track global rally on US-Japan trade deal boost

India's equity benchmarks rose on Wednesday, tracking other Asian markets as the United States' surprise trade deal announcement with Japan boosted hopes of agreements with other trading partners. The Nifty 50 rose 0.63% to 25,219.9 points and the BSE Sensex added 0.66% to 82,726.64. MSCI's broadest index for Asia-Pacific stocks outside Japan advanced 1.4%, while Japan's Nikkei 225 gained 3.5%. Stocks in Europe too surged as traders kept an eye on the EU-U.S. trade talks scheduled for later in the day. On the other hand, the prospects of an interim trade deal between India and the U.S. before Washington's August 1 deadline have dimmed, with talks deadlocked over tariff cuts on key agricultural and dairy products, Reuters reported, citing two Indian government sources. 'The gains in Indian market today have come on the back of a global rally. While there was anticipation of an interim deal between U.S. and India, it does not look like it will materialize before the August 1 deadline,' said VK Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments. Fifteen of the 16 major sectoral indexes logged gains. Heavyweights financials and information technology stocks rose 0.8% and 0.3%, respectively. India's stock benchmarks end flat as Reliance, trade jitters offset Eternal gains HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank rose 0.9% and 1%, respectively, marking their third day of gains after reporting upbeat earnings on Saturday. The broader small-caps ended flat, while mid-caps rose 0.3%. Real estate index fell 2.6%, with Lodha Developers and Oberoi Realty sliding 7.5% and 3.1%, respectively, following large block deals. Among other stocks, PNB Gilts surged 8.2% as its quarterly profit tripled on the back of gains made from securities. Tata Consumer Products slipped 2.1%, and Dr Reddy's Laboratories gained 0.6% ahead of their earnings.
