Royal Ascot gamble has bookies in fear after significant payout swerved

Bookies are fearing a significant ante-post gamble being landed at Royal Ascot on Wednesday. The Liffey, trained by Joseph O'Brien, has been backed from 100/1 all the day down to single figures in the Royal Hunt Cup, the third last race on day two of the meeting.
Ryan Moore partners the No Nay Never gelding, who finished fourth of nine on stable debut over seven furlongs at Naas in a listed race last month. The four-year-old won two of his three stars for the trainer's father Aidan, with the last of those coming at Listowel last June.
The Liffey was as big as 100/1 with some betting firms for the Royal Hunt Cup ante-post, one of the toughest handicaps of the meeting, but is now a best-priced 11/1, having been as short as 6/1 with some bookies. The gamble comes as firms avoided a significant payout on another Joseph O'Brien-trained runner on Tuesday after Galen was narrowly beaten by Haatem in the Wolferton Stakes.
Brian O'Keeffe, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: "A frustrating opening day for Joseph O'Brien saw us bookies swerve a significant payout on Galen in the Wolferton but he might just come roaring back today. The Liffey is a considerable liability on our antepost book and the booking of Ryan Moore has done nothing to lessen our fears."
Elsewhere on day two, favourites Los Angeles and Cinderella's Dream are 'very well-backed' in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes and Duke Of Cambridge Stakes respectively.
Brand Director at BetMGM, Dan Towse, said: 'The favourites had a mixed time of things on day one of Royal Ascot, but punters are hoping they'll oblige today with both Los Angeles and Cinderella's Dream very well-backed.
'In the Prince of Wales's Stakes, Los Angeles is 7/4 from 9/4 as Aidan O'Brien seeks a sixth win in the race, while Cinderella's Dream has shortened into 6/4 from 7/4 for the Duke Of Cambridge.
'The other notable market mover is Society Kiss in the opening Queen Mary, who is 15/2 from 17/2, as Ralph Beckett's filly bids to make it two from two at Ascot.'

Qirat causes enormous shock in Sussex Stakes at Goodwood

Field Of Gold's pacemaker Qirat caused an almighty shock with a 150-1 victory in the Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. John and Thady Gosden's Field Of Gold was a 1-3 shot to follow in the hoofprints of his sire Kingman by adding this prestigious Group One contest to his previous top-level victories in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and the St James's Palace Stakes. The Ralph Beckett-trained Qirat, who was last seen finishing 27th of 30 runners in the Royal Hunt Cup, was supplemented for the race last week at a cost of £70,000 in a bid to ensure the red-hot favourite had a strong gallop to aim at. But the race did not go to script, with Qirat keeping up the gallop to emerge triumphant under Richard Kingscote, despite the best efforts of Rosallion, who was a neck adrift at the line. Field Of Gold, meanwhile, had to settle for a laboured fourth, with Henri Matisse third. Ger Lyons has his sights on America after Lady Iman made a successful Goodwood raid to regain the winning thread in the HKJC World Pool Molecomb Stakes. The daughter of Starman had dazzled in her opening three outings but lost her unbeaten record to Aidan O'Brien's Beautify at the Curragh in the Airlie Stud Stakes. Reverting to five furlongs for her first taste of action on British soil, she was sent off the 11-8 favourite and Ryan Moore kept things simple, travelling smoothly in the slipstream of the early leaders before taking over in the final furlong where she was not for catching. Tim Easterby's consistent Argentine Tango gave chase in vain for an honourable second, with Kevin Ryan's early pacesetter Dickensian in third. Stable companions Saqqara Sands and Tabiti shared the honours after the judge announced a dead-heat following a thrilling renewal of the HKJC World Pool Oak Tree Stakes. Tabiti was among the leading contenders for the Group Three contest at 9-2 and with blinkers applied for a second time, the three-year-old set out to make all the running in the hands of Ryan Moore. Saqqara Sands, a much bigger price at 16-1 under Rossa Ryan, emerged from the pack as the biggest threat inside the final furlong and while she briefly managed to poke her head in front, Tabiti battled back and the Ralph Beckett-trained pair passed the post as one.

Galway Races gamble sees locally trained horse's odds slashed for big race

A significant gamble is developing ahead of day three of the Galway Races. The Galway Plate is the feature contest at Ballybrit on Wednesday and BOYLE Sports report that Buddy One is their biggest liability in the race. The eight-year-old gelding has seen his odds cut to 7/1 (from 25/1) as punters bank on a local winner scooping the €162,000 first prize for trainer, Paul Gilligan. Gilligan, who is based in Athenry, is no stranger to success at his local meeting, but his stable star landing the Galway Plate would be his biggest career victory to date. Last year's Galway Hurdle winner Nurburgring is the 9/2 joint-favourite for Joseph O'Brien and Bronsan Racing as he bids to become just the third horse to do the Hurdle/Plate double with the JP McManus-owned Down Memory Lane also catching the eye of the oddsmakers at 9/2 having been as big as 7/1 earlier this week. Willie Mullins will field three of the 22 strong field, with Adamantly Chosen, the mount of Paul Townend, supported into 16/1 (from 25/1). Brian O'Keeffe, spokesperson for BOYLE Sports, said: 'It's a typically hot renewal of the Galway Plate and while Nurburgring and Down Memory Lane head the betting, it's a locally trained horse, Buddy One, that would bring tears of joy to the crowd in Ballybrit and tears of sorrow to the bookies.'
