What really happens on a cruise ship during a tsunami? The truth may shock you
A huge 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia has sent tsunami warnings across the Pacific, which has scared cruise ship passengers. Ships from Hawaii to Alaska rushed to safety as the waves came in. But what really happens when a cruise ship gets into this kind of trouble? The truth is stranger and scarier than you think.
While deep-sea waters can protect ships, the true danger is near ports. Passengers say that things were very chaotic as cruise ships quickly left the docks, sometimes leaving guests behind as panic grew. Besides Hawaii and Japan, advisories have been issued for Alaska, which is currently the busiest cruise destination.

The deep ocean is the safest place for a ship during a tsunami, which is strange. Tsunami waves move quickly, but in deep water, they are hard to see. They are often only a few feet high across large areas. That changes a lot when the waves get close to land. They slow down, get taller, and become dangerous, as per a report by the Daily Mail.
Officials have cautioned that there may be worse to come as waves from the earthquake have already been seen striking Maui, Hawaii. At a safe depth, which varies but is typically greater than 180 feet, tsunamis are comparatively innocuous to boats as they pass beneath.

Only when they get close to shorelines, where the waves rise and become destructive, do they start to pose a threat. Warnings about ships at sea have been issued, according to Cruise Hive.
"Avoid entering shallow water, harbors, marinas, bays, and inlets if at sea to avoid floating and submerged debris and strong currents," it says.
To lessen the impact of waves, it has been recommended that any craft in the ocean relocate to water at least 180 feet deep. Teams on cruise lines monitor the weather and emergency conditions and advise the ship of any necessary route adjustments.
It is unknown if the tsunami will force cruise ships to change their itineraries or skip ports of call. However, if ports are damaged by waves, it might be necessary to cancel visits to some areas.
What happens if a cruise is docked during a tsunami warning?
With peak cruise season in full swing, destinations like Hawaii and Alaska saw ships preparing for quick exits. Social media was flooded with dramatic footage. One TikTok user, @demifreeman, captured passengers sprinting down a Hawaiian pier as their cruise ship began pulling away without them. 'Actually insane,' she wrote. 'We are going to be in the middle of the tsunami in the ocean.'
Another clip from @mandythecruiseplanner showed a busload of frustrated tourists who'd missed their boat as it rushed to deeper waters for safety.

How do cruise ships respond to tsunami threats?
Cruise ships might also have to avoid the coast for a while until things settle down, depending on the aftershock's strength and timing. Ships may employ specific strategies, like navigating away from the epicentre, according to Cruise Passenger.
They will stay in touch with emergency services and authorities to receive situational updates. It coincides with reports from some vacationers that cruise ships are departing empty as they leave ports to go to deeper waters.
A reality check for travelers
For those cruising in paradise, the past few days have been a sobering reminder: even in luxury, nature calls the shots. From Russia's tremors to Hawaii's swells, this tsunami alert has exposed just how vulnerable sea travel can be.
FAQs

Infopark Phase III: GCDA to pool 1,000 acres, to issue notification soon
Kochi: Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) initiated procedures to publish the notification for land pooling for the much-awaited Phase III of Infopark GCDA is planning to pool nearly 1,000 acres to establish the new campus across 300 acres in Kizhakkambalam and Kunnathunadu villages of the district. The project will be the first land-pooling project in Kerala. Govt tasked GCDA with land pooling through an order last year. Following this, GCDA engaged in discussions with Infopark at various stages, conducted site inspections and began efforts to identify suitable land. However, GCDA faced technical hurdles as the identified lands were outside GCDA's jurisdiction. The authority approached govt, which subsequently issued an order last month assigning GCDA a special task for land pooling in the area. The first step for land pooling is issuing an initial notification by determining the suitable land. The area intended for pooling, along with details including survey numbers, will be published with the help of a boundary map. Subsequently, a meeting of landowners in the area will be convened to present the project details. If 75% of total landowners agree to pooling, GCDA will proceed with the project. Following this, a draft project document will be prepared for govt approval. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo After gathering public opinions and necessary changes, the final project document will be prepared before commencing work. After implementing projects on the pooled land, a specified percentage of land will be returned to landowners. If 75% of landowners do not consent, steps will be initiated to identify other suitable land, said GCDA authorities. A press note issued by GCDA on Monday said Phase III campus will feature six key components: carbon neutrality, self-sufficiency in water resources, a complete waste management system, road, rail and airport connectivity, an inclusive IT park and a maintenance system that doesn't disrupt the functioning of IT companies. Besides IT companies, there will be residential facilities, commercial establishments, sports and cultural facilities, recreational areas, hospitals and educational institutions, it said.

20 years on, GDA may file FIR against officials for 134 extra flats in society
Ghaziabad: GDA will take action against several current and former officials who allowed a private developer to construct and sell 134 extra flats beyond the sanctioned 400 units at Express Garden society in Indirapuram's Vaibhav Khand in 2005. A GDA panel, set up on the direction of the Allahabad High Court, is set to submit its report to the Authority's additional secretary later this week. The high court is due to hear the matter in Sept. Officials, privy to the content of the committee's findings, said the panel has recommended "FIR be filed against the architect, developer and the then GDA officials under whose watch the additional units were constructed". Last Feb, TOI reported that the internal probe by the GDA had zeroed in on some officials deputed mostly at the development authority's enforcement wing between 2008 and 2012, and notices had been served to them. Developer Pankaj Goyal, meanwhile, said he was not aware of any probe by a GDA-led panel against the project. "We did not tamper with the covered area but subdivided bigger flats to carve out 134 extra units," Goyal said. "We are for regularising the extra units as per the provisions of Building Bylaws, 2016, for which we approached the state govt and got the necessary sanction. This will be presented in the court." In 2005, the GDA approved the layout of Express Garden, allowing the construction of 400 flats on plot number 6 of Vaibhav Khand. The construction was completed between 2008-12.

Kolkata office market sees growth in Grade A assets, PBDs
Kolkata: More than half of Kolkata's burgeoning office stock has been classified as Grade A, according to a report by property consultancy Knight Frank India (KFI) in its report "A Billion Sq Ft and Counting – India Office Supply Growth Story" released on Monday. "This is a clear indication of the region's focus on quality-led development," said KFI senior director (occupier strategy & solutions) Joydeep Paul. Further, 71% of Kolkata's office stock is now concentrated in peripheral business districts (PBDs) such as Salt Lake Sector V and New Town, underlining the city's structural shift from legacy central business districts (CBDs) to well-connected, cost-efficient suburban office corridors. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Kolkata currently accounts for 3% of India's total office space. But developers say that with Kolkata steadily evolving as a business destination, the share is set to rise. In the past decade, the office market in Kolkata witnessed a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.2%, fuelled by infrastructure upgrades, increased interest from regional headquarters of national and global companies and rising occupier confidence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn 57+ Languages Easily with AI [Join] Talkpal AI Undo "Kolkata may be smaller in terms of absolute office stock, but it's steadily building a strong foundation for future growth. With the majority of supply in PBDs and a growing share of Grade A assets, the city presents compelling opportunities for occupiers seeking quality spaces at attractive costs. The emergence of new corridors, and increased occupier diversification signal a positive shift in the market's trajectory," said Paul. Demand in Kolkata was largely driven by IT/ITES, BFSI, flex spaces, and regional headquarters of national conglomerates. A growing startup ecosystem and rising interest from coworking players has added to the city's absorption pipeline. While close to three-fourths of the office market stock concentrated in PBDs, traditional CBDs including Park Street, Camac Street, and Esplanade comprise 20% of the stock, while secondary business districts (SBDs) like EM Bypass, Topsia and Anandapur contribute 8%. Though Kolkata's high Grade A office stock is in line with the national average, the city also held the highest share of Grade C stock among top office markets at 11%, highlighting the opportunity for asset upgrade and retrofitting to meet modern occupier expectations. Grade B stock comprised 37% of the city's total office space. Kolkata continued to offer attractive rental economics, with CBD rents ranging from Rs 70–105/sq ft, SBDs from Rs 55–95/sq ft, and PBDs from Rs 27–65/sq ft, reinforcing its sub-dollar competitiveness in global benchmarks.
