Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to visit IIT Jodhpur to inaugurate lecture hall on June 9

New Delhi [India], June 8 (ANI): Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will visit the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur on June 9 for a one-day visit. On this occasion, Birla will inaugurate the newly constructed Lecture Hall Complex - II at the Institute.
Constructed at a cost of Rs 14.8 crore, this state-of-the-art Lecture Hall Complex at IIT Jodhpur is expected to give a new direction to the Institute's academic and research activities.
During his visit, Birla will also distribute the 'Research Initiative Grant', which is aimed at encouraging researchers and innovation-related projects. In addition, he will launch the Institute's new official website.
On this occasion, the Lok Sabha Speaker will also release the 'Science Through Play' comic series, designed to popularise science. This series is an innovative effort to connect children and youth with scientific thinking in a simple and engaging language.
Rajya Sabha MP Rajendra Gehlot, social worker Nimbaram, renowned space scientist and Chairperson of IIT Jodhpur's Board of Governors AS Kiran Kumar, IIT Jodhpur Director Prof Avinash K. Agarwal, and Deputy Director Prof Bhabani K. Satpathy will also be present at the event. AS Kiran Kumar will preside over the programme.
This visit by the Lok Sabha Speaker is being seen as an important initiative to expand the reach of higher education, innovation, and science to the masses.
The Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur (IIT Jodhpur), located in Rajasthan, is a premier technical institute established by the Government of India in 2008. It is known for delivering high-quality engineering education, research, and innovation. (ANI)

The machines include 3 Tesla MRI Scanner (MAGNETOM Vida) worth Rs. 14 crore, 4D CT Simulator System (SOMATOM go. Sim) worth Rs. 8 crore, used in radiotherapy. These technologies are first of their kind in Rayalaseema, enabling precise cancer detection and brain scans with minimal side effects. Over 2.5 lakh patients annually will benefit from affordable treatment. Bringing cutting-edge technology to patient care, the Department of Oncopathology at Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Punjab has initiated DNA and RNA-based Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) for advanced cancer diagnosis and personalised treatment in its New Chandigarh unit in Mohali. NGS is a molecular diagnostic technology that enables rapid and comprehensive analysis of DNA and RNA, which helps to identify genetic mutations that drive cancer. This powerful tool allows doctors to tailor treatment plans based on a patient's unique tumour profile, ensuring more precise and effective therapy. It also plays a crucial role in detecting hereditary cancer syndromes and monitoring disease progression or recurrence. With this addition, the hospital further strengthens its commitment to offering world-class and personalised cancer care. The service is now available for patients with both solid tumours and blood cancers. Dr Ashish Gulia, director of the hospital, stated that very few hospitals in this part of the country offer this testing facility. He highlighted how cancer treatment is becoming increasingly specialised. In the past, there were only a few types of chemotherapy and treatments, and cancer categories were limited. Taking lung cancer as an example, he explained that previously, there were just two types. Now, by checking the genetic profile of lung cancer, doctors can determine its specific type. This test offers two main benefits. Firstly, it helps identify which cancers are treatable and the ones incurable. This allows medical professionals to focus their efforts effectively, rather than applying the same energy to all types of cancer. Second, the test reveals specific tumours that can be treated in a specialised way, leading to better treatment outcomes. Comparing past and present technology, Gulia noted that a decade ago, a lung cancer diagnosis often meant a bleak prognosis. However, with NGS, it is now possible to treat such patients much more effectively. Dr Sankalp Sancheti, head, Department of Oncopathology, Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, described the new high-end test as a complex process, and previously, samples for this test had to be sent to Mumbai. Now, with the facility available in-house, it will save considerable time for both the hospital and patients, thereby improving convenience. The cancer hospital is a tertiary care hospital with a 300-bed capacity, built at the cost of over Rs 660 crore by Tata Memorial Centre, an aided institute under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. The hospital functions like a 'hub' of cancer care and treatment in the region, with the 100-bedded hospital in Sangrur functioning as its 'spoke' as part of the hub and spoke model.

Science and Innovation Activity centres to be set up across Maharashtra

The Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission (RGSTC) has set up 'Science and Innovation Activity Centres' (SIAC) in select districts of Maharashtra since 2015. Now, the government aims to establish SIAC centres in the remaining 23 districts along with 28 new technology labs, announced state Information Technology Minister Ashish Shelar in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday. These will be built over a period of five years and the project is expected to cost around Rs 192 crore. Promoting scientific temper among citizens is regarded as a fundamental duty by the Indian Constitution. In line with this vision, the Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission (RGSTC) has, since 2015, set up Science and Innovation Activity Centres (SIAC) in select districts of Maharashtra to spark scientific curiosity and interest among school-going students. 'Now, this transformative initiative will be relaunched and expanded across the state. The government will pay homage to renowned scientist Jayant Narlikar by naming the programme in his honour for his extraordinary contributions in the field of science,' said Shelar. These centres will be developed in collaboration with capable educational institutions related to school education, and with the support of national science organizations such as the Nehru Science Centre of the National Council of Science Museums, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Muktangan Exploratory Science Centre and Vigyan Ashram, said Shelar. The SIAC initiative is an important step towards instilling scientific temperament among students in Maharashtra and aligns with the goals of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. These centres are not just meant for schools but will become hubs of knowledge for the entire community, said the minister. 'Expanding SIACs to all districts will help create a science-friendly Maharashtra in the future. A professional team comprising curators, engineers and retired officials will be formed to oversee implementation and operations. The initiative will involve collaboration with the central government, the National Council of Science Museums, and other institutions,' added Shelar. Through SIACs, students will gain hands-on experience with modern technologies, experiments, models, robotics, 3D printing, coding, and more. These centres help: -Develop scientific understanding and skills -Foster curiosity, creativity, and communication abilities -Provide training and educational resources for teachers -Offer equal opportunities to students in rural areas Till now, SIACs have been established in six districts: Warananagar, Pravaranagar, Amravati, Satara, Baramati, and Devrukh. Work is underway to set up centres in three more districts: Nanded, Akola, and Parbhani.
