Ahmedabad tailor's son surmounts 'Mount English' to do MBA at IIT-J

AHMEDABAD: What happens when you are confident of cracking Common Admission Test (CAT), but not knowing English enough to get past the interview stage? Ankit Maurya, 22, a resident of Saraspur in the city, experienced the same challenge. Son of a tailor, Maurya studied throughout in govt-run Gujarati medium school and then in a public college. But Maurya challenged himself to surmount the barrier - he succeeded in securing admission for MBA program at IIT Jodhpur this year. "I appeared for CAT for the first time last year and secured marks that put me in 77th percentile. But in that score, too, my verbal ability and reading comprehension (VARC) was much lower at 40th percentile. It was a wake-up call as I realised that even if I crack the exam, I would not be able to clear the interview stage," recounts Maurya. He worked with teachers to focus on grasping the language in a race against time. "I did not start from scratch - the reading and comprehension for schools and that for the CAT are two different beasts. Vocabulary was a big challenge," he says. Come CAT 2025 and Maurya was prepared. He secured marks that put him in 95th percentile. What came as a huge relief for him was his score in the VARC - it was above 90th percentile. His obvious choices were the IIMs but he candidly confesses that his score was not up to the mark to get into the hallowed passages of institutions such as Amritsar, Visakhapatnam, and Mumbai where did clear the first round. But he then secured admission at IIT-J with focus on both technology and management. "My father earns about Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 by cutting the shirt pieces. We live in a 1BHK residence, but we have big dreams. After the MBA degree, I want to work for some time and then become an entrepreneur. My degree will come handy then," says Maurya. He has a parting word for the aspirants like him. "I have now attained mind to mouth synchronization. I know it's a long way to go, but I have gained confidence. I would tell those wishing to pursue professional courses not to ignore English - but more importantly, not to be intimidated by it. With hard work and determination, anyone can learn it," he says. Satish Kumar, a mentor of Ankit's who helped him prepare, said that his case is a testament to hard work and determination. "Over the past decade, we have seen a significant rise in aspirants from Gujarat, and Maurya's success shows path to many who are not good in other languages," he said.

Rajasthan CM Bhajanlal Sharma attends the 11th convocation ceremony of IIT Jodhpur

Jodhpur (Rajasthan) [India], June 26 (ANI): Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma attended the 11th convocation ceremony of IIT Jodhpur. CM Bhajanlal congratulated all the students graduating as well as their parents. He said, 'This event is not merely an event but a celebration of being close to one's dream, the same dream with which all the students entered the IIT.' 'It is a big day for the students as well as the family. Along with their children, parents also share the same dream. And when that dream is fulfilled, the happiness experienced by parents is known only to them', he added while congratulating the parents. He congratulated all the 1200 students receiving their degrees in different courses and wished them luck for the future. Earlier, CM Bhajanlal Sharma congratulated two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra, who won the men's javelin throw competition at the Ostrava Golden Spike 2025 athletics at the Mestsky Stadion in Czechia on Wednesday. The reigning world champion, Neeraj, the only person to clear an 85m-plus distance, finished at the top with a throw of 85.29m and registered his 24th straight top-two finish. He continued to extend his dominance, especially after reigning supreme in the Paris Diamond League title last Friday with a mammoth throw of 88.16m. Bhajanlal Sharma posted on X handle, 'Heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the great athlete Neeraj Chopra ji for winning the gold medal at the prestigious 'Ostrava Golden Spike 2025' competition held in the Czech Republic, bringing pride to India on the global stage. Jai Hind! @Neeraj_chopra1.' South Africa's Douw Smit, who registered a throw of 84.12m in his second try, finished second, followed by Grenada's Anderson Peters in third with 83.63m that came in his opening attempt. At the Ostrava Golden Spike event, Neeraj brushed off stiff competition from Peters and Thomas Rohler, two athletes who appeared to threaten the Indian's dominance at the event and showed signs of sluggishness in their first throws. Peters didn't offer a sense of surety in his run-up and registered a throw of 83.63m. Rohler, the Rio Olympic champion, was way off his game and heaved the javelin to 69.35m on his return after enduring a period of injuries. While the duo struggled for rhythm, Neeraj registered a foul throw in his first attempt but nailed his second attempt, registering a distance of 83.45m. The Indian javelin sensation moved to the top on his third try by sending his javelin to a distance of 85.29m. He breached the 80m mark in his fourth attempt as well, but didn't appear too impressed with the distance of 82.17m. He continued to hold the top spot while his competitor, Rohler, improved his first attempt distance by registering 77.78m. On his fifth try, Neeraj failed to improve his previous attempt and settled with a throw of 81.01m. He concluded the event with a foul effort in his final throw but stayed at the top to bring the title home. (ANI)

Researchers create powerful new tool to expose invisible toxin lurking in tap water: 'Our ultimate goal'

As glacial melt, drought, and other weather phenomena bring about the decline of our water quality, detecting heavy metals and other toxins in our water supply becomes increasingly essential. Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur recently developed a portable and inexpensive arsenic sensor to help address water contamination in low-income regions of the world. Even in small amounts, exposure to arsenic can lead to skin lesions and skin cancer, among other health problems, according to the World Health Organization. Exposure to arsenic predominantly comes through contaminated water, especially groundwater, as well as food crops. The study, published in the journal Nanotechnology, outlines a new water monitoring technology that can detect concentrations of arsenic as low as 0.90 parts per billion in just 3.2 seconds, per Designed to operate across wide distances at a low cost, the sensor outpaces former spectroscopic and electrochemical arsenic detection tools in its accessibility to low-income regions. "We've designed the sensor with usability in mind, ensuring that even people in remote areas can benefit from it," explained study lead author Mahesh Kumar. Since arsenic is both colorless and odorless, it often goes undetected in drinking water, noted Inside Climate News. In other words, we don't even recognize the potential dangers of what we might be consuming from the comfort of our homes. The journal Science reported that 4 billion people worldwide lack access to safe water. Our planet's overheating strongly correlates with rising arsenic levels, particularly through drought events and water shortages, during which the concentration of heavy metals increases in our shrinking water supply. While detecting water contamination doesn't address the source of the issue, it's certainly a step toward keeping populations safe, especially in developing countries. According to the Pre-Collegiate Global Health Review, low-income regions often struggle with water access and quality and may lack the medical technology to confront crises arising from unsafe water consumption due to a lack of public health concerns or education. "Our ultimate goal is to reduce the number of deaths and prevent the serious diseases caused by arsenic contamination and to provide safer drinking water for everyone," Kumar continued. Meanwhile, we can aim to dismantle water insecurity by reducing and even reversing water pollution through stricter industrial regulations and more advanced treatment plants. For your part, you can implement home rainwater collection systems to protect your local climate and wildlife while slashing your water bills.
