Ramayana in Karachi: Pakistani drama group making waves with adaptation of Hindu epic; Critic praises production's authentic storytelling approach
A theatre group from Pakistan has garnered attention for presenting an adaptation of the "Ramayana", a significant Hindu mythological narrative depicting the triumph of good over evil, in Karachi's Sindh province.
The theatrical group "Mauj" has received praise for their performance at the Karachi Arts Council during the weekend, particularly for incorporating AI technology to enhance their portrayal of the epic, PTI reported.
Director Yoheshwar Karera expressed confidence about staging the "Ramayana", stating he never anticipated negative reactions or security concerns.
"To me, bringing the Ramayana to life on stage is a visual treat and shows the Pakistani society is more tolerant than it is often given credit for," he stated.
According to Karera, the production received positive feedback, with reviewers commending both the overall presentation and individual performances.
Critic Omair Alavi praised the production's authentic storytelling approach, noting how the combination of lighting effects, live musical score, vibrant costumes, and set design contributed to the production's magnificence.
"The narrative is top class as the Ramayana is a story that resonates with millions around the world."
Rana Kazmi, the producer who portrays Sita, expressed her fascination with presenting this ancient narrative as an engaging theatrical experience for modern audiences.

'JSK vs State of Kerala' gets new release date after legal battle over film's title
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], July 13 (ANI): After weeks of controversy over the film's title, the makers of Suresh Gopi's 'JSK vs State of Kerala' have finally announced the movie's new release date. It was earlier stated to release on June 20. Granted with a U/A 16+ after the tough legal battle around the film's title, actor Suresh Gopi took to his Instagram handle to share the much-awaited release date of the film. The movie is now set to release worldwide on July 17. While sharing the new release date, the makers wrote, 'Behind every delay... have a truth worth fighting for.' and in the end that truth shall always prevail !!! JANAKAI V v/s STATE OF KERALA. U/A 16+ CERTIFICATION WORLDWIDE RELEASE ON JULY 17TH.' The release of the Malayalam movie 'Janaki vs State of Kerala' starring Union Minister and superstar Suresh Gopi was stalled following a demand from the Censor Board for a film title change. As per the film's makers, the censor board asked them to change the name 'Janaki', saying it also refers to the Hindu goddess Sita. The movie tells the story of a woman who faced assault and took legal fight against the state. The board reportedly said that God's name should not be given to a woman who was assaulted. The film's release was scheduled for June 20. The regional office of CBFC in Thiruvananthapuram had cleared the film with a U/A certificate. The film was later forwarded to the CBFC headquarters in Mumbai, where officials demanded a change in the title. If the film's title is changed, many dialogues in the film mentioning the name will also need to be changed, as per the makers of the film. In response to this, the makers of 'JSK vs State of Kerala' moved the Kerala High Court to challenge the change. Apart from that, the artists from Malayalam cinema and serial fraternity under the umbrella of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Actors), Producers Association and FEFKA ( Film Employees Federation of Kerala) staged a protest infront of the regional office of Central Bureau of Film Certification at Chitranjali Studio complex, Thiruvallam in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram. Saina Nehwal Announces Separation From Husband, Says "We're Choosing..."
Olympic bronze medalist Saina Nehwal announced her separation from husband Parupalli Kashyap on Sunday. Nehwal, who won bronze at the London Olympics 2012, took to social media to announce the news. "Life takes us in different directions sometimes. After much thought and consideration, Kashyap Parupalli and I have decided to part ways. We're choosing peace, growth, and healing - for ourselves and each other. I'm grateful for the memories and wish nothing but the best moving forward. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy during this time," Saina wrote on her Instagram story. Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap got married in 2018. Saina and Parupalli both trained at the Pullela Gopichand academy in Hyderabad. While Saina grabbed the headlines with her brilliant performances and bronze at the Olympics, Parupalli also made a name for himself with a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2014. She was the second Indian woman to win an Olympic medal after Karnam Malleshwari. In 2015, Saina became the first Indian woman to achieve the World No.1 ranking in women's singles. Parupalli has not announced anything about the separation from his side. Back in 2024, Saina revealed that she is battling arthritis and will have to decide on her badminton future. "The knee is not very good. I have arthritis. My cartilage has gone to a bad state. It is very difficult to push for eight-nine hours," Nehwal said on the 'House of Glory' podcast hosted by shooting great Gagan Narang, who was India's chef-de-mission in the recent Paris Olympics. "How will you challenge the best players in the world in such a state? I think I will have to accept it somewhere. Because two hours of training is not good enough to play with the highest level of players and get the desired results," she added. (With PTI inputs)
