Florida power retakes No.1 spot in latest USA TODAY Sports girls flag football Super 25

Yahoo22-05-2025
State championship outcomes reshaped the latest USA TODAY Sports girls flag football Super 25, a shift that headlined with a new No. 1 appearing this week from the Sunshine State.
Tampa Alonso's impressive run through the 4A Florida bracket ended with a tough one-point win over top-5 power Wellington. With the Ravens' victory, the state champs leapfrogged No. 2 Seminole Ridge, which also took home hardware in the 3A final.

One of the most significant moves of the week, though, came out of Tennessee, where Ravenwood knocked off nationally ranked Stone Memorial. The Raptors snapped the Panthers' impressive 11-game winning streak with a 34-14 victory, giving the Brentwood squad the state invitational title while moving them into the top 25.
And the movement didn't stop there. Two more teams jumped into the bottom half of the rankings, which included an undefeated New York team making a strong push up the flag football hierarchy.
Super 25 flag football selection process
In partnership with the NFL, the teams are determined by a USA TODAY Network selection committee of editors and writers in the participating states and the USA TODAY High School Sports staff.

Fernando Alonso Gives Update on Back Injury Ahead of Hungarian GP

Aston Martin Formula One driver Fernando Alonso has broken his silence on the back injury that caused him to stay out of the first practice session yesterday. His team announced ahead of FP1 that Alonso would be absent for the session. Aston Martin reserve driver Felipe Drugovich took his place in the AMR25 F1 car instead. The team stated: "In the days following the Belgian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso has been managing a muscular injury in his back. As he continues with treatment this morning, he has chosen to sit out of FP1. "Felipe Drugovich will drive in FP1 alongside Lance Stroll. A decision will then be made on Fernando's participation in FP2 and the remainder of the weekend in due course." Fernando Alonso of Spain and Aston Martin F1 Team walks in the paddock during practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Hungary at Hungaroring on August 1, 2025 in Budapest, Hungary. Fernando Alonso of Spain and Aston Martin F1 Team walks in the paddock during practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Hungary at Hungaroring on August 1, 2025 in Budapest, the Spaniard was back in the second practice session, he has now opened up on the injury, stating that an MRI scan helped him detect it the previous week. He said at the Hungaroring: "Yeah, always. Always you have small pain and discomfort here and there. The thing is that we did the MRI last week just to check properly and we saw a small, small injury on the muscles." Alonso highlighted that the injury is severe enough for a normal person to need extended rest, but given the absence of pain when he is in his F1 car, the 44-year-old driver confirmed that he would be able to race. He said: "Obviously, if you are a normal person, you will sit a little bit for two weeks. But yeah, I think it is manageable. I don't have pain in the car, which is the most important thing." The AMR25 has been fitted with a new front wing. When asked about his feedback on the new part, Alonso said: "Obviously, I missed FP1, but FP2 felt good. The balance is still maybe not in the window where probably I would like the car to be. A little bit of understeer mid-corner and struggling to rotate the car on the slow speed. "But yeah, normal for a first practice of the weekend. Let's see what we can change overnight. And also, yes, a couple of tests that the guys did in FP1." Alonso finished P5 in FP2, one position behind his teammate Lance Stroll in P4. Could this be the race weekend where Aston Martin bounces back with the help of performance enhancements?

Pete Alonso snaps 0-fer slump with home run in Mets' loss

Try it free Pete Alonso has been a part of the offensive malaise the Mets have been stuck in, with the first baseman having entered Friday's series opener against the Giants stuck in an 0-for-17 skid. But Alonso sparked the Mets lineup in the seventh inning of a 4-3, 10-inning loss at Citi Field. After striking out in each of his first two at-bats of the night against left-hander Robbie Ray, Alonso led off the bottom of the seventh. With the Mets trailing by three runs and having not scored since Tuesday, Alonso proceeded to belt his 23rd homer of the season. It cut the Mets' deficit to two runs and the shot to right-center was only the Mets' third hit of the night versus Ray. The homer was also just Alonso's second homer in his past 18 games. It left Alonso three home runs away from Darryl Strawberry's franchise record 252. Alonso followed it up an inning later with a game-tying sacrifice fly. Following Ray's departure after seven innings, the Mets got to San Francisco's bullpen. Pete Alonso belts a solo homer in the seventh inning of the Mets' 4-3, 10-inning loss to the Giants on Aug. 1, 2025. Robert Sabo / New York Post Brandon Nimmo walked and Francisco Lindor singled to set up Juan Soto's run-scoring hit that ended up in short left field to make it 3-2, with runners on the corners. Alonso's fly ball to center scored Lindor to tie the game at 3-3. But after Ronny Mauricio's pinch-hit walk, Brett Baty — hitting for Mark Vientos — grounded out to keep the game tied. Pete Alonso hits a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning of the Mets' loss to the Giants. Robert Sabo / New York Post Alonso also walked. 'There were some good signs from Pete today,' Carlos Mendoza said. 'When I get out of my plan, I chase off-speed [pitches],'' Alonso said. 'I chased some heaters tonight, but laid off the breaking stuff.' The Mets have to hope Alonso's 414-foot, 110-mph home run — and the 108-mph sac fly off ex-teammate José Buttó — help get him going given he was just 5-for-60 with 19 strikeouts entering the game, part of a heart of the lineup that has been struggling. Lindor entered just 9-for-63 with 19 strikeouts in his previous 14 games, while Soto was in a 4-for-37 rut before his RBI hit in the eighth. Only the Phillies' Kyle Schwarber has driven in more runs in the National League this season than Alonso, who is looking to get the Mets going down the stretch. 'This is what you play for,'' Alonso said. 'This is what it's all about.'

Real Madrid reject €75 million offer for key midfield star

The one position Real Madrid see to be in need of reinforcement but have not strengthened this summer is the defensive midfield, a department where they have been linked with Angelo Stiller, Rodri, Martin Zubimendi and others. Manager Xabi Alonso sees the pivot position to be one where the squad lacks a natural ball player and a controlling presence. As it stands, Aurelien Tchouameni is the only natural profile in the position and is thus expected to have a big role in the new season. Real Madrid's tactics in the FIFA Club World Cup spoke volumes about the importance of the defensive midfield position in Alonso's plans as Tchouameni served as the focal point in the buildup and effectively a third centre-back. Not for sale As relayed in a recent report by Fichajes, Alonso and Real Madrid see Tchouameni to be untransferable for any price in the current transfer market and will not sanction his departure at any cost. Tchouameni will not be sold. (Photo by) The manager sees the player to be a vital part of his plans and thus does not contemplate a sale in any capacity despite interest arriving from the Premier League – possibly from Arsenal. The report further reports that the offer from England reportedly included a transfer fee of €75 million – a sum that is significant in the current market dynamics. Even that sum, however, was not enough to make the club consider a sale as Real Madrid do not wish to part ways with him this summer. Tchouameni, for his part, is happy at the club and is eager to continue his relationship with Real Madrid for the years to come. He wishes to compete only at the highest level, something he believes he can only do at the best club in the world.
