Florida power retakes No.1 spot in latest USA TODAY Sports girls flag football Super 25
State championship outcomes reshaped the latest USA TODAY Sports girls flag football Super 25, a shift that headlined with a new No. 1 appearing this week from the Sunshine State. Tampa Alonso's impressive run through the 4A Florida bracket ended with a tough one-point win over top-5 power Wellington. With the Ravens' victory, the state champs leapfrogged No. 2 Seminole Ridge, which also took home hardware in the 3A final. Advertisement One of the most significant moves of the week, though, came out of Tennessee, where Ravenwood knocked off nationally ranked Stone Memorial. The Raptors snapped the Panthers' impressive 11-game winning streak with a 34-14 victory, giving the Brentwood squad the state invitational title while moving them into the top 25. And the movement didn't stop there. Two more teams jumped into the bottom half of the rankings, which included an undefeated New York team making a strong push up the flag football hierarchy. Freshman flag football player Taylor Jones dominating New Jersey scene
In Newark, a freshman is quickly rising as one of the best flag football players in the state of New Jersey. Her coach said she's becoming a "face" of the sport in the state. At her pace, she may soon be among the faces of the sport in the nation. Taylor Jones became the first player in New Jersey to pass and run for over 1,000 yards apiece this season, and had accumulated 2,596 yards on the season, as of May 19. On Tuesday night, she helped Central High School (Neward, N.J.) beat the second-seeded West Orange in the SFC-North semifinals, throwing a 15-yard touchdown pass in double overtime to walk it off, beating a team that only allowed six touchdowns all year, according to Advertisement More: Florida power retakes No.1 spot in latest USA TODAY Sports girls flag football Super 25 This was the fifth game-winning drive for Central of the season, according to the outlet. The Blue Devils improved to 10-1 on the season. Through the first 10 games, Jones led the state with 1,426 rushing yards. She also had 1,152 passing yards and 25 total touchdowns, 11 of which were through the air — now 12 of her 26 touchdowns after Tuesday — according to Jones played tackle football in Pop Warner before switching to flag football in middle school and moving from running back to quarterback. 'I didn't know coming into the season how special she was,' Newark Central head coach Mark Ingram told 'She has supreme talents in football. She makes winning plays. She's a five-star player and puts the work in.' Advertisement 'I've always wanted to play quarterback,' Jones said to the outlet. 'If I notice something that I can't do, I work even harder at it. Super 25 rankings update: Perry rises after winning Arizona championship
As seasons come to a close and more championships are played, let's hone in on one of the most impressive titles of the year: Perry High School won its fourth straight Arizona state title as five-star power forward Koa Peat played through a broken hand to ensure he would go out the same way he spent every other high school season: as a champion. Perry is one of several Super 25 teams that have won a championship. There's still more basketball to be played at the highest levels, as Roosevelt and Archbishop Riordan prepare to face off Saturday night for the California Interscholastic Federation Open Division, and tournaments like The Throne and Chipotle Nationals position some of the top teams against each other. USA TODAY Sports Super 25 boys basketball rankings as of Feb. 27, 2025
We'd have to go to the Wayback Machine to find the last time Montverde Academy (Fla.) was not represented in the Super 25. For those who may have to find a new date in the future, that day is Feb. 27, 2025. The Eagles, a perennial mainstay in all national rankings, suffered their sixth loss of the season. With a 19-6 record, they fell out of the Super 25. DeMatha, which also suffered its sixth loss, departed the national rankings as well, opening the door for Christ School to re-enter as champions and 36-win Highland to debut.
