The best pickleball shoes for 2025, tested by real players

Independent12-06-2025
Pickleball's rapid rise from a niche pastime to a national obsession has turned it into a full-on phenomenon. As more players hit the court, gear matters more than ever — and shoes are a huge part of that. Whether you're playing in a local rec league or fine-tuning your footwork for a tournament, the right pair of shoes can make a noticeable difference in both performance and comfort.
Riley Chervinski, co-owner of Racket Royalty underscored the importance of proper footwear from the start: 'Don't just wear running shoes,' she said. 'You should be playing in shoes designed for lateral movement like court shoes — either tennis or pickleball-specific — to prevent rolled ankles and help you move faster on the kitchen line.'
Dr Uetz, a physical therapist and pickleball instructor with TeachMe.To, who works with athletes to prevent injury and enhance performance echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that your choice of footwear can directly impact your safety and agility. 'All sports pose a certain set of risks while playing and pickleball is no different,' he explained. 'Proper shoes can limit slipping and sliding that can contribute to falls, assist in lateral movements while reducing the likelihood of rolling the foot [or] ankle, and improve performance with a solid grip on court surfaces.'
Today's best pickleball shoes balance grip, comfort, and support while remaining breathable and light enough for hours of play. Some are even purpose-built just for pickleball, though tennis shoes with durable outsoles and reinforced uppers remain popular among many players.
How I tested
I tried out an assortment of popular pickleball and tennis court shoes during indoor and outdoor sessions to see how they held up in real-world conditions. I recruited three other players to join me: one beginner, one advanced player, and another intermediate like myself. The shoes were worn during games and casual play and we focused on how the shoes felt and took notes on grip, comfort, ankle stability, and breathability.
To support my testing, I also asked Uetz to outline the key features to look for when selecting pickleball shoes, so I considered each of the below too:
Support and stability — Arch and lateral support help prevent ankle sprains and keep you comfortable. A snug fit with minimal wiggle room is key, along with soles made for court sports to reduce slipping.
Comfort and fit — Even the best shoes won't work if they don't suit your foot. Prioritize personal preferences like toe box width and cushioning — and try them on before committing.
Durability — Quick stops and side-to-side movements are tough on shoes. Look for models built to withstand frequent play so you're not replacing them too soon.
Outsole — Soles designed for court use provide better grip on both indoor and outdoor surfaces, helping you move confidently and avoid slips.
Break-in time — Most shoes need a few days to adjust. Uetz recommends wearing them around the house for a few days before hitting the court so your feet can adjust to the fit.
Using expert insights and real-world testing as a guide, I narrowed it down to a handful of standout options. Each pair offers something different but all are built to help you play better and feel more safe and confident on the court.

PSG manager Luis Enrique faces total coaching ban after SLAPPING Chelsea star Joao Pedro at Club World Cup

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN boss Luis Enrique faces a TOTAL coaching ban for his Club World Cup Final slap attack on Chelsea star Joao Pedro. Spaniard Enrique lost control after his side crashed 3-0 to Chelsea in New Jersey's MetLife Stadium. 3 3 After squaring up to the Brazilian striker, the PSG chief slapped him once to the side of the head, before players rushed in to separate the duo. The incident sparked a major melee involving 20-plus players and staff from both sides. Fifa is now poised to open a formal disciplinary probe into Enrique's behaviour. But world chiefs are UNABLE to impose a specific match sanction because PSG and Enrique will not play any games under their jurisdiction until the Champions League winners represent Europe in the InterContinental Cup in December. And that leaves a TIME penalty - a period in which the Catalan would be prevented from doing ANY training ground or match day work - as the most likely punishment if Enrique is charged with misconduct. But midfielder Joao Neves will probably NOT be banned for his hair-tug red card on Marc Cucarella in the final moments of the match, under tournament-specific rules published by Fifa before a ball was kicked. The likely punishment for Enrique was predicted by senior Spanish referee Eduardo Gonzalez, who said: 'Of course, you can be sanctioned. 'There's a difference, the red and yellow cards in the tournament will expire. But FIFA can sanction him with time. 'So, if Luis Enrique is given a one-month ban, he would miss any games in that month. What's more, he wouldn't even be able to train the team.' He added: 'You can't touch an opponent's face. That's already a humiliating issue, that you have to go over and punch a player in the face when the game is over. Luis Enrique explains why he slapped Joao Pedro in shocking bust-up after Chelsea's Club World Cup win over PSG 'I don't look at names, I look at the action, and if we look at the action, it's punishable. 'Fifa is above Uefa. If Fifa tells you there are three matches it's in their competition, but since in this tournament the yellow and red cards ended, FIFA can, on the other hand, sanction players based on time.' The time-based penalty was handed out to former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez when he bit Italy's Giorgio Chiellini in Uruguay's World Cup group game at the 2014 finals. Suarez was initially banned from 'all football-related activities' for four months and banned for nine international matches, although an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was partially successful allowing the striker to train with new club Barcelona. Fifa have yet to confirm whether disciplinary procedures have been opened against Enrique or anybody else involved. The PSG boss - who could now be banned for PSG's Super Cup meeting with Spurs in Udine on August 14 - attempted to downplay the incident in the aftermath of the defeat. He said: "At the end of the match, there was a situation that was completely avoidable for everyone. "My intention, as always, was to try to separate the players so that it didn't escalate. 'It was definitely avoidable; there was a lot of pressure. There were some problematic things coming from a lot of people. It's not the best way to attract attention." Enrique appeared to be trying to pin the blame on Blues chief Enzo Maresca as he added: 'I have seen Maresca. 'I saw he had pushed others and we had to separate all the players and I do not know where that pressure came from. "I have no problem expressing my feeling at the end of the game in a high level of pressure. It's very stressful for all of us. It is going to be impossible to avoid that. "Everybody was involved. It was not what was best and the end result of the pressure of the match. "But this is a situation we must all avoid. That goes without saying. My intention is that I wanted to separate the footballers, so the situations didn't become worse." Joao Pedro, who scored the third goal of Chelsea's first half blitz, suggested the flare-up had been sparked by PSG players making a bee-line for Brazilian youngster Andrey Santos. He said: 'I went to protect Andrey. I saw their players were crowding Andrey. Like a good Brazilian, I went to protect my friend. 'A lot of people were arriving and in that mess, I ended up getting shoved. It's part of it. "I don't need to say anything more about them because it's normal. Everyone wants to win the game and, in the end, I think they lost their heads. "But this is football, this has happened and now we need to enjoy it because we won the tournament, that's it. I don't want to talk too much about them because you know how it works. Football is this." Neves' red card, though, will not bring a ban unless Fifa rule it deserves an extra punishment. The regulations for the tournament state: 'Without prejudice to any other sanction that might result, any match suspension resulting from a player or official being sent off - as a result of a direct or an indirect red card - will not be carried over to another competition.'

Donald Trump risks wrath of NFL fans with executive order quip after US President gatecrashed Chelsea's FIFA Club World Cup trophy celebrations

Donald Trump has risked the fury of NFL fans by teasing a controversial executive order as he attended the FIFA Club World Cup final in New York. Trump watched from the stands with First Lady Melania and FIFA president Gianni Infantino, as the expanded competition drew to a close. Chelsea earned a shock 3-0 victory over reigning European champions PSG, with Trump then handed the honour of presenting the trophy. The US President left both fans and players confused as he remained on stage with Chelsea players during the trophy lift, despite Infantino attempting to encourage him to leave. Trump risked further controversy in an interview with DAZN about the tournament and the sport as a whole. Speaking to DAZN reporter Emily Austin, Trump referenced how sport remains known as 'soccer' in the United States compared to football across much of the world. 'It is a big thing [the tournament] and Gianni is a friend of mine, he has done such a great job with the league, with soccer – they would call it football – but I guess we call it soccer,' Trump said. 'I am not sure that change can be made very easily, but it is great to watch.' Austin then pitched a suggestion to Trump, which could see him oversee the changing of the sport's name in the United States. 'What if we made an executive order that we can only say football from now on?' Austin pitched. Trump quipped in response 'I think we could do that, I think I could do that.' If Trump were to follow through on the suggestion, it would likely cause a backlash among NFL fans. American football has long been referred to simply as 'football' in the United States, with the sport remaining the most popular in the nation. It is not uncommon though for nations to attempt to transition from soccer to football. Palmer had appeared baffled by Trump's continued presence during the trophy presentation Palmer admitted at a press conference that he was 'a bit confused' by the situation Australia and New Zealand both renamed their national federations to remove mentions of soccer in favour of football, as they attempted to fall in line with the common usage worldwide. Toward the end of the interview, Trump was asked what his message to viewers around the world would be before the World Cup arrives next year. 'It's about unity, it's about everybody getting together and a lot of love between countries... I guess this is probably the most international sport, so it can really bring the world together,' Trump said. On the pitch Chelsea clinched the Club World Cup title by beating Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in front of a sold out crowd in New Jersey. Cole Palmer bagged a first half brace before setting up new signing Joao Pedro for their third. Trump took centre stage post-match as he remained as part of the Blues trophy celebrations. Palmer looked especially confused by Trump's actions and appeared to utter the words: 'What's he doing?' Trump had earlier presented Palmer with the golden ball award with the 23-year-old midfielder looking as equally baffled during that presentation. After presenting medals, Trump was spotted front and centre as the Blues hoisted the trophy.

'I thought that he was going to exit the stage'

In one of the stranger moments of the Club World Cup final, Chelsea captain Reece James has been explaining how US president Donald Trump ended up in the trophy lift had been at the match alongside Fifa president Gianni Infantino and was part of the trophy presentation ceremony at the many expected 79-year-old to leave the stage after handing over the trophy to the Blues captain, he initially stayed as James lifted the piece of asked about the situation after the match, James said: "I think the first thing I have to say is that it probably highlights how big the tournament is."The coverage for the tournament and the final was huge."Answering your question, before, they told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage, and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay."Chelsea had been labelled underdogs for the final against reigning European champions Paris St-Germain, but shook off the tag to stun the French side feels this is a "statement" victory that can give them a platform to build from going into the new season."I think for sure we are moving in the right direction, you know, winning this trophy against such good opposition," he added. "It's a big statement. I'm happy with how much the club has progressed and how next season we're competing in the Premier League, to win the title and compete and to go far in the Champions League as well."
