NASHVILLE − Fight season has officially begun in Nashville.
It all kicked off with the Professional Fighters League's World Tournament semifinals on June 12 at the Municipal Auditorium, the first of a full slate of fights in Music City this summer.

"I got to tell you, I've been here four days and the vibe's amazing. The people are amazing. It's exciting ... we had a really good crowd out there and I think they were excited too," PFL insider and analyst Johnathan Coachman said after the card.
"We also have fighters that have really good following. So to me, we've got to target certain cities in the United States as we grow ... Nashville is a growing city. Everybody knows that. And damn we love it man, we really, really do."
It's the first taste of world class mixed martial arts that Nashville fans have had since August 2024, when PFL last made the trip to Middle Tennessee. But they won't have to wait long for the next set of fights.
On June 21, Nashville hosts Tennessee's first professional bare knuckle boxing card, which is being billed as the "Music City Brawl." Dana White and the UFC return to Nashville on July 12 for a Derrick Lewis-headlined Fight Night card at Bridgestone Arena.

While Nashville has never been known as combat sports hub, the tide is beginning to turn with major promotions taking notice.
"Tennessee is a hot spot man. From Clarksville to Memphis to Knoxville (and) Nashville, Tennessee is a hotbed for MMA," Clarksville's Jason Danner (3-0) said winning the opening bout of the the PFL card. "There's so much good talent around, it's just never ending man.
"You go from East Tennessee to the Cumberland Plateau to the West. Tennessee is a hotbed man and it's growing and growing every year. I started out fighting in backyards and bars and now I'm in a stadium with some of the biggest names in MMA. It's a dream come true."

A growing fanbase is what ultimately brought PFL back to Nashville.

"Nashville, the Music City, is an entertainment town of course, but it's also a sports town," PFL CEO Peter Murray told The Tennessean in March. "It's also a great sports town with a diverse sports fan base and a tremendous amount of interest and demand for combat sports, including MMA."
There are few better places to celebrate a win than Broadway, where Thad Jean intends to become a familiar face following his career-best win over Jason Jackson by split decision in the main event. Jean improved to 10-0 while advancing to the PFL's World Tournament welterweight final against Logan Storley, who also picked up a victory on the card.

"I'm going to go to karaoke. I'm going to go singing. I'm going to go dancing," Jean said after the win. "I'm in Nashville ... we're going to be a life of Broadway, not just the bar, (but) Broadway. It's going to be great."

Box Office: ‘F1' Revs to $144 Million Globally, ‘Lilo & Stitch' Nears $950 Million Milestone

Brad Pitt's original racing drama 'F1' drove to the top of the box office charts, collecting a sizable $88.4 million internationally and $144 million globally in its opening weekend. The film, from director Joseph Kosinski and producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Formula One champ Lewis Hamilton, follows a retired driver (Pitt) who returns to the popular motorsport to coach a cocksure rookie (Damson Idris) and save a failing team. Outside of the U.S. and Canada, where 'F1' zoomed to $55.6 million, the top-earning territories were the United Kingdom with $9.2 million, China with $9 million and Mexico with $6.7 million. More from Variety 'M3GAN 2.0' Star Allison Williams on Making The Android an 'Action Star' and Crafting Another Unforgettable Musical Moment Brad Pitt's 'F1' Delivers Apple's First Box Office Hit With $55.6 Million Debut, 'M3GAN 2.0' Fizzles With $10 Million 'M3GAN 2.0' Costume Designer on How Farrah Fawcett and Judy Jetson Inspired M3GAN's Armor 'F1' marks the first commercial win for Apple, which has previously backed underperforming big screen offerings like 'Killers of the Flower Moon,' 'Napoleon' and 'Argylle.' Against a nearly $250 million production budget and massive marketing spend, 'F1' will need significantly more ticket sales to break even and turn a theatrical profit. But this is Apple's closest attempt to all-audience blockbuster status and will soon overtake 'Napoleon' ($221 million globally) as the company's highest-grossing release. And 'F1' is expected to benefit in the coming weeks from solid reviews, positive word-of-mouth and Imax screens before landing on the company's streamer, Apple TV+. Since Apple doesn't have a distribution arm, the tech giant is paying Warner Bros. to put the film in theaters; the Burbank-based studio will also receive a percentage of theatrical revenues that increases with certain box office benchmarks. 'F1' also represents a victory for Imax, whose cameras were used to film the ultra-immersive, high-speed racing sequences. Imax screens accounted for $11.1 million overseas and $27.7 million globally, representing 19% of overall revenues — the fourth-highest percentage in Imax's history. ''F1' has inspired audiences around the globe with its underdog story and perfect blend of high-octane racing and human-centered storytelling,' says Apple's head of worldwide video Zack Van Amburg. 'The film's outstanding debut reflects both the excitement of Formula 1 and the deeply emotional and entertaining story crafted by the entire cast and creative team. Their dedication and innovation have fueled an unforgettable cinematic experience.' In terms of other newcomers, Universal and Blumhouse's A.I. thriller 'M3GAN 2.0' flatlined with $7 million from 80 international markets. Mexico earned a leading $1.2 million, followed by the U.K. and Ireland with $700,000 and Brazil with $400,000. Along with $10.2 million domestically, 'M3GAN 2.0' has grossed a soft $17 million in its first weekend of release. With weak reviews and seemingly diminished audience interest, the campy horror sequel failed to achieve the box office heights of 2023's 'M3GAN,' which ignited to $15 million overseas and $45 million globally. The original became a sleeper hit with $180 million worldwide, which explains the studio's justification for the follow-up film set around the scream queen who became a meme queen. Fortunately for the studio, 'M3GAN 2.0' cost a modest $25 million, so potential theatrical losses won't be too painful. Plus, Universal is flying high with 'How to Train Your Dragon,' which added $32 million internationally in its third frame. The live-action remake has earned $254 million overseas and $454 million worldwide to date, underscoring the enduring appeal of the fantastical property. Universal has the live-action sequel set for 2027. PG films have been dominating at the box office with 'Lilo & Stitch' adding $13.1 million from 52 markets for a massive overseas tally of $545 million. After six weekends on the big screen, the live-action 'Lilo & Stitch' is about to cross the $950 million milestone (with $946 million globally so far) and has $1 billion on the horizon. A live-action sequel to 'Lilo & Stitch' is also in the works. Not every movie with a family friendly rating is electrifying the box office. Disney's original Pixar adventure 'Elio' brought in just $11.4 million from 48 territories in its sophomore outing. After notching the worst start in Pixar history, 'Elio' has grossed $30 million overseas and $73 million worldwide. Though positive word-of-mouth should help the film endure throughout the summer, 'Elio' is nowhere near on track to earn enough to justify its $150 million production budget.

Beating Messi's Miami 'harder than it may seem': PSG's Luis Enrique

Paris Saint-Germain's Spanish coach Luis Enrique said it was harder than it seemed to see off Lionel Messi's Inter Miami (FRANCK FIFE) Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique said defeating Lionel Messi and Inter Miami on Sunday was trickier than it seemed despite the French side's 4-0 Club World Cup last 16 triumph. Joao Neves' early strike sent PSG ahead and then they scored three more in a flurry before half-time to take an unassailable lead. Advertisement Former PSG and Barcelona star Messi impressed in the second half as Miami battled well but could not find a way through. "It is difficult to play against players of this calibre, it was difficult, but I think as a team we did an excellent job," Luis Enrique told reporters. "There's a visible difference between the first and second halves... their quality is evident, and I think we deserved the victory. "It was harder than it may seem, after the first half." The Spanish coach said his PSG team, who won the Champions League, Ligue 1 and the French Cup to claim their first ever treble, are in spectacular form and are hoping to triumph in the United States. Advertisement "Clearly, we are experiencing a historic season for our club, we aim to go far in this competition," continued Luis Enrique. "We are in the quarter-finals, with only eight teams remaining. Our goal is to progress as far as possible and to compete for the trophy. But for that, we need to overcome two more knock-out rounds. "The season is very long, as it is for all teams, but the motivation to be competitive is there." PSG winger Ousmane Dembele said he was "glad to see" Messi and his former Barcelona team-mates Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano. "Leo is a unique person, to share a game with him was magnificent, I was a kid watching his magic on the television, so it's unique," said PSG defender Lucas Beraldo. Advertisement - 'Reality' hits - Inter Miami coach Mascherano said he was pleased with his team's performance at the tournament despite their eventual thrashing by PSG. "We achieved the goal we had set for ourselves, we were very aware that we could compete up to a certain level, and today reality has shown that," Mascherano told reporters. "I am very proud of my players, of the work they did in the competition (...) we tried to show in each match what we could do. The gap is what it is, but I am very proud of them." Mascherano said his Argentine compatriot Messi was able to show his quality despite the defeat. Advertisement "I think Leo played a great game, within the options we had. In the second half, we found him much more. In the first half, we couldn't due to Paris's pressure," said the coach. "They slowed their tempo in the second half, and we were able to show what we usually do in MLS (Major League Soccer)." Despite PSG being arguably the best team in the world at the moment, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta was filled with Inter Miami shirts, mostly with eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi's number 10 on the back. "PSG is in great form, champions of everything, but people still pay for a ticket to see Leo Messi, even at 38 years old," added Mascherano. rbs/dmc

Love Island USA tells viewers to stop harassing contestants: 'Remember they're real people'

Where's the love? Love Island USA — currently in its seventh season and the most-watched streaming reality show in the U.S. — has issued a rare and serious warning to its many fans that harassing its contestants will not be tolerated. This comes as viewers have increasingly criticized the show's cast members online. The attacks amped up after a recent round of eliminations and the introduction of some new cast members. The show's host, Ariana Madix, even warned viewers during one recent aftershow: "Don't be contacting people's families. Don't be doxing people. Don't be going on islanders' pages and saying rude things." During Tuesday's episode, Peacock broadcast a message that read: "The keyword in Love Island is… Love. We love our fans. We love our Islanders. We don't love cyberbullying, harassment or hate." Around the same time, the show made a similar reminder in a post on X and Instagram. "We appreciate the fans, the passion for the series, and the amazing group of Islanders who are sharing their summer with us," they wrote. "Please just remember they're real people — so let's be kind and spread the love!" CBC News has reached out for comment to NBC, which runs the Peacock streaming platform, but hasn't heard back. On Love Island USA, a group of single men and women move into a remote villa with the goal of finding love. The contestants couple up based on first impressions. Those relationships are tested. Do they have lasting chemistry? They also have the option of exploring connections with other people, including a stream of new singles who arrive throughout. At different points, viewers are invited to vote for their favourite couples. Contestants are eliminated throughout the show, and in the end, the public votes for the winning couple, who get a cash prize if they both choose to stay together. The show's seventh season debuted June 3 and average viewership has quadrupled since, according to a NBC Universal press release. But the show's popularity also extends beyond the screen — NBC says Love Island USA generated some 54 million social media interactions across platforms between June 2 and June 19 alone. And a lot of it is negative. Noah Sheline, who has a daughter with contestant Huda Mustafa, has spoken out on social media about the backlash against his ex, for instance. Last week, Sheline posted on TikTok pleading with people to be nice, for both Mustafa's sake and for their daughter's, according to People. "Her going on that show to find love, or whatever you think it was she's doing, remember she's still human, she has a daughter, and a life," he wrote. "It's crazy I have to involve myself in this but I don't want my daughter's mom to get out and see this and her mental health goes down a hill." (The cast doesn't have access to social media while they're filming the show.) WATCH | What it's really like on reality TV: One of the Love Island franchise staples is a twist called Casa Amor, where the couples are split into separate villas to spend time with new (sexy) singles. And this year, one of those singles is Elan Bibas, who grew up in Richmond Hill, Ont., and attended Queen's University in Kingston, Ont. Bibas, who is Jewish and has posted online about visiting Israel, has reportedly been called a "threat" by viewers online because of his background. Some posts on social media have accused him of being an IDF soldier (there is no evidence he has ever been one), or have expressed worry that a Palestinian castmate is in danger. People online got especially fired up when Bibas and Mustafa, who is of Palestinian descent, kissed on the show earlier this week. People have posted that they're disgusted and want to vomit, and have left comments on Bibas's Instagram posts accusing him of murder, calling him a serial killer, and saying they refuse to watch the show until he's gone. The backlash was so bad that the Anti-Defamation League chimed in Wednesday about the idea of him being a threat. "It's blatantly antisemitic to label a Jewish man who has visited Israel as 'dangerous,'" the New York-based NGO posted on TikTok. "Attacks on Elan and efforts to villainize him are hateful and baseless." Love Island certainly isn't the only franchise with an online harassment problem. Stars of The Bachelor have previously spoken out about the hate they get online. In 2020, during a "Women Tell All" special, bachelorette Rachel Lindsay led a segment on online harassment. Lindsay was the show's first Black bachelorette. "I feel like you guys hear us talk about the hate that we receive, but you have no idea what it is," Lindsay said. "The only way I can actually make you feel it is for you to see it, so I want to start out by reading some of these messages that these women have received." She then read a series of messages encouraging the women on the show to kill themselves, calling them names, and threatening to harm them. And last year, fans of the Netflix stalking drama Baby Reindeer were so determined to identify the show's characters that the show's creator made a public plea for people to stop the sleuthing. But it didn't work, and after armchair detectives identified the so-called stalker as Fiona Harvey, she sued Netflix. She said she was tormented online.
