In the aftermath of the Hockey Canada sexual assault trial, a group of high school seniors from Kitchener, Ontario, are voicing what many women across the country are feeling — that despite the global attention from the #MeToo movement, little has changed when it comes to real-world safety, respect, and justice for young women.
From the classroom to the workplace, consent remains misunderstood
The girls, all 12th-graders, shared their daily experiences with harassment — not in viral headlines, but in grocery stores and bakeries, where older men make predatory remarks and ignore boundaries.
Seventeen-year-old Samira Nur explained: 'I encounter a lot of creepy men… I'm at work, and under the expectation that I still have to treat these people with kindness, despite the fact that I'm being, like, fully disrespected.'
Her classmate, Anna De Sousa, recounted a chilling annual encounter with an older male customer: 'Last year, he was like, 'You're 17 now. Next year, I'll be back. We're gonna go out.' Every time I see his face, my body literally starts shaking.'
These aren't isolated incidents—they're part of a wider issue that the girls say their education barely prepared them for. Consent was glossed over in brief lessons, often through awkward metaphors like 'the tea video.'
As Samira put it: 'It wasn't really treated very seriously.'
Social media and toxic masculinity fuel the pressure
The rise of online platforms has only made things worse. With Snapchat and Instagram, harassment is more anonymous, more constant, and more cruel. 'Honestly, I think it's gotten worse,' said Nishtha Tomer. 'They will not say a word to you in real life, but online, it's the meanest things.'
And with influencers like Andrew Tate spreading misogynistic messages, girls like Loyd Gebreselassie are noticing a shift in male attitudes: 'This trend is growing with younger men… All these ideologies they've gathered and almost try to force onto women.'
The teens acknowledge #MeToo helped break silence and remove shame. But legal and systemic progress feels distant. 'More so that than actually really solving anything,' said Shantelle Carrion.

Their message is clear: while the headlines may fade, the fight for safer spaces, better education, and deeper understanding of consent must continue—because for many young women, the danger never went away.

Mohammed Shami Called 'Characterless', Ex-Wife Accuses Him Of Hiring Criminals To...

Last Updated: Hasin Jahan, ex-wife of cricketer Mohammed Shami, has accused him of bribing criminals to harm her and wasting money on 'crooks and prostitutes.' Hasin Jahan, the ex-wife of cricketer Mohammed Shami, has accused him of bribing criminals to 'harm, defame and harass' her over the past seven years of their legal battle. She called him 'characterless, greedy, and mean-minded' and said he used the money their family deserved on 'crooks and prostitutes'. Jahan made the comments via Instagram on Friday (July 4). They come only days after the Calcutta High Court ordered him to pay Rs 4 lakh per month to her and their daughter Aaira in a divorce case. The couple ended their four-year-long marriage in 2018 after Jahan, a former model, accused Shami of domestic violence. 'Till my last breath, we will have a strong relationship, Inshallah," Jahan wrote on Instagram. 'The only thing left is for you to decide what kind of strong relationship that will be. For 7 years, we've been involved in a legal battle. What have you gained from it? Because of being characterless, greedy, and mean-minded, you ended up destroying your own family," she added. 'How many criminals did you bribe to harm me, defame me, harass me, defeat me everywhere? Did you achieve anything? The money you wasted on crooks and prostitutes—if you had spent that on your daughter's education, life, and future, and given me a good life, things would've been so much better. You would've been saved from sin, and we could've lived a respectful and dignified life," she added. Shami has continued to plead his innocence in the case. He has retained his place in the Indian team as well as getting several IPL contracts in the meantime. 'You took advantage of a male-dominated society and stayed happy while antisocial people called me wrong. Now I will take the help of the law, claim all our rights, and live happily, Inshallah. Now you think: which support is stronger—social or legal? But remember: all the antisocial people giving you moral support right now are supporting your sins. The day your bad time begins, these same people will make your life hell, Inshallah. Have faith in that," she concluded. India are currently playing a five-Test series against England in the UK. Shami has not been selected for the tour due to fitness and form concerns, with the team getting some young blood in.

The Calcutta High Court recently ruled that Shami must pay Rs 1.5 lakh per month to Jahan and Rs 2.5 lakh to their daughter Aaira, effective from a back date of seven years. This decision came after Jahan appealed against an earlier district court order that had granted a lower sum—Rs 50,000 for her and Rs 80,000 for their court, under Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee, stated that the revised sum was a fair and reasonable provision to ensure financial security for both petitioners. "I Love You": Estranged Wife Hasin Jahan Writes To Mohammed Shami. Instagram Post Turns Out To Be A Rant

From the time Indian cricket team star Mohammed Shami was asked by the Calcutta High Court to pay Rs 4 lakh per month as maintenance expenses to Hasin Jahan and daughter Aaira, the cricketer has come under verbal attack from his estranged wife. According to the order, Hasin Jahan will have to be paid Rs 1.50 lakh per month while the daughter will get Rs 2.50 lakh per month. This amount will be levied from a back date of seven years. The lower court has been ordered to dispose the case within six months. The case was filed under 'Protection Of Women From Domestic Violence' act. In an Instagram post on Friday, Hasin Jahan tagged Mohammed Shami, and used strong words like "greedy, mean-minded" against the cricketer. Following is the Instagram post that Hasin Jahan shared, that started with the line: "I love you so much jaanu." However, what followed was a rant. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Haseen Jahan (@hasinjahanofficial) Earlier, Hasin Jahan had called Shami a person with 'wrong mindset'. "A person with a wrong mindset, who has crime in his mind, and who pushes his own family, wife and children towards trouble, and who was never anything and suddenly a lot happens, these people get arrogance and attitude. They develop such an attitude that they themselves do not know which path they are standing on, what they are doing and why they are doing it. Right now, he (Shami) is completely consumed by pride. The day that pride fades, he will remember his wife, his daughter, and all his wrongdoings. As of now, because of that arrogance, he has made no effort to contact me or our daughter. In fact, the last time he met our daughter was only because of Hon'ble Justice Tirthankar Ghosh's fear," said Hasin. Jahan had moved the high court against a district sessions court's order directing the cricketer to pay Rs 50,000 to his wife and Rs 80,000 to her daughter in 2023. "In my considered opinion, a sum of Rs 1,50,000 per month to the petitioner no.1 (wife) and Rs 2,50,000 to her daughter would be just fair and reasonable to ensure financial stability for both the petitioners, till disposal of the main application," the order passed by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee on Tuesday stated. "However as regards petitioner's child the husband /opposite party No 2 will always be at liberty to voluntarily assist her with educational and/or other reasonable expenses, over and above the aforesaid amount," the order added.
