Bill Belichick doesn't think outside distractions will be an issue at UNC: 'We've always dealt with that'

Yahoo11-06-2025
It's been easy to forget considering everything else going on in his life, but Bill Belichick is going to coach at the University of North Carolina this season. Belichick answered questions about the team — and his personal life — during a press conference Tuesday.
While most of the questions focused on UNC's team, Belichick was asked about girlfriend Jordon Hudson, and how much attention their relationship has received. In typical Belichick fashion, he downplayed the issue and focused on football.
"Is there noise out there? We've always dealt with that. Really, our job is to build the football team ... help build the team and also build their individual careers. That's really where we are at."

Belichick was also asked whether he would have returned to coaching if he knew his personal life was going to be a big story. Again, he downplayed the issue, saying a lot of the "noise" is a result of his book, which he worked on while he was away from coaching. He quipped that he hopes the book will be a "big purchase on Father's Day."
When asked whether Hudson will appear on the sideline during North Carolina games, Belichick said that would not be the case before turning the answer to football.
"She doesn't have any role in the UNC football program, but again there's been noise out there about a lot of different things. Again, our focus is day-to-day getting better, stacking good days together."
Those types of answers should sound pretty familiar to anyone who followed Belichick's NFL career. Belichick was famous for focusing solely on football and not allowing outside noise to affect his team. The Patriots and Belichick handled a handful of scandals during his tenure as head coach, including Deflategate and Spygate. The team never missed a beat despite those scandals.
With the Patriots, Belichick was rarely the reason for those outside distractions. That isn't the case this time around, where Belichick's relationship with Hudson has led to both questions and confusion.
In the end, it might not matter. Belichick has a knack for shutting down outside noise. If he can do that and turn in a successful season at UNC, it won't be long before the things change and he's gruffly telling reporters "we're on to Georgia Tech" after he gets asked a football question he doesn't want to answer.

Mike Vrabel 'not messing around' as he prepares for 1st training camp as Patriots coach

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Mike Vrabel was hired as New England Patriots coach seven months ago to recalibrate a team that hasn't won a playoff game since its most recent Super Bowl win in the 2018 season, and has slumped to 4-13 finishes the past two seasons. Everything Vrabel has done, from hiring his coaching staff to building out the roster through free agency and the draft, has been about laying a foundation for his first season. Advertisement As important as all those steps and initial spring workouts have been in the process, the work begins in earnest Wednesday with the start of training camp. He said his message to his new team will be simple. 'It's time to build a team,' Vrabel said. 'We have to start coming together as a football team.' Vrabel arrived at Foxborough having shared history with each of his two predecessors — winning two Super Bowls as a player under Bill Belichick and then playing his final season in New England alongside Belichick successor Jerod Mayo. When he was hired in January, Vrabel said his initial goal would be to put together a team capable of taking advantage of opponents when they play bad football. Advertisement That's still an ongoing project, but one that he believes they've made headway on. 'We're closer than where we were in March or April when we got here. I think we are,' Vrabel said. 'I think the players are starting to understand. We talk about the good, the bad, and the (stuff) that gets you beat, and I think that they can tell the difference between those three now.' Special teamer Brenden Schooler, who earned his first All-Pro selection last season, said the no-nonsense vibe Vrabel has introduced is noticeable around the team facility. 'You're not scared, but you know he's not messing around,' Schooler said. Advertisement One thing that has helped Vrabel make an early impression is that he won't be coaching any players that have links to the Patriots most recent run of success. Following the release of long snapper Joe Cardona in April, there are no remaining players on New England's roster that were on the 2018 Super Bowl team. As he begins the process of whittling down the 91 players that will begin camp, Vrabel said he wants to see them not just try to make the roster but carve out a role with the team. 'There's a lot of different levels to what those roles are, and in my 14-year career I've had plenty of them: from special teams, multiple-position backup, to starter, a starter that was expected to be productive, to a veteran leader,' Vrabel said. 'So, there's multiple levels of what that role will be, and it's up to them to earn it.'. Advertisement No limits for Diggs Receiver Stefon Diggs passed his physical and will be practicing without limitations nine months after undergoing season-ending knee surgery. 'It's just a testament to how hard he worked,' Vrabel said. 'Is he going to take every single rep of every single period? No, and I don't think any player will. But I think we're off to a good start and encouraged by what we saw here in the last couple of days.' A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Diggs had six straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons for the Vikings and Bills before he was traded from Buffalo to Houston last spring. He had 47 catches for 496 yards and three touchdowns in eight games for the Texans before he tore the ACL in his right knee in October. ___ AP NFL:

Patriots honor Ozzy Osbourne following death of rock legend

While the New England Patriots operate in the sports world, the franchise joined the land of heavy metal Tuesday in mourning the loss of rock legend Ozzy Osbourne. Osbourne, the former front man of Black Sabbath and the Godfather of heavy metal, died at the age of 76 on Tuesday. Though he hailed from the UK, Osbourne has had a special connection to New England's football team for the last two decades. For over 20 years, the Patriots have taken the field on game day to Black Sabbath's "Crazy Train." Throughout the franchise's dynastic run, Tom Brady sprinted down the field with the heavy metal hit blaring in the background and fired up fans with one of his patented fist-pumps. It was quite the 1-2 punch to get New Englanders ready and pumped for that day's game. Shortly after news of Osbourne's passing broke Tuesday, the Patriots took to X to post a tribute to the rock legend. "The New England Patriots are saddened to learn of the passing of music legend Ozzy Osbourne, who provided the iconic intro for Patriots games for over 20 years," the team posted. "Condolences to his family and all who mourn his loss." While Osbourne and Black Sabbath never played a concert at Gillette Stadium, he made a special appearance at the home of the Patriots in 2005 when he helped the team raise its 2004 Super Bowl banner with a live pre-game performance of "Crazy Train." The Patriots went out and beat the Oakland Raiders, 30-20, that night to open the 2005 NFL season.

When will Patriots wear their red throwback uniforms during the 2025 season?

The New England Patriots are bringing back the fan-favorite red throwback uniforms for two games in the 2025 season, the team announced Tuesday. One of those games will be the Patriots' return to Monday Night Football. New England will wear the beloved "Pat Patriot" threads in Week 3 when the team hosts the Pittsburgh Steelers, and again in Week 13 when it welcomes the New York Giants to Gillette Stadium for a Monday Night Football showdown. The Patriots termed those tilts as "Throwback Bouts" in a post to X on Tuesday. The red look is connected with some of the darker days in Patriots history, and the team hasn't had much recent success in them either. But the uniforms look sharp and have had a special place in the hearts of New England fans since their return three years ago. The uniforms were brought back sporadically from 1994-2012 (with the team going 9-3 in the garbs) but collected dust for a decade because the NFL had a rule where teams had to wear the same helmets throughout the season. When that rule was lifted in 2022, teams all around the NFL started to turn back the clock with their uniforms. The Patriots have worn their red threads twice in each of the last three seasons, but have gone just 1-5 in those contests. New England won its first throwback game in 2022 -- a Week 5 win over the Detroit Lions -- but then lost to the Buffalo Bills in the red unis in Week 13 on Thursday Night Football. In 2023, the Patriots lost to the Miami Dolphins, 24-17, in Week 2 in the throwbacks. They wore them again in Week 13, which was a dreadful 6-0 loss to the L.A. Chargers on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Foxboro. Last season, the Patriots lost to the Houston Texans, 41-21, in the red uniforms, which was also Drake Maye's first career start. The Patriots were down 14-7 at halftime after the rookie QB hit Kayshon Boutte for a 40-yard touchdown ahead of the break, but trailed 27-7 late in the third quarter. Maye threw two more touchdowns in the second half and finished with 243 passing yards, but was also picked off twice in the loss. The Patriots wore the red uniforms again in Week 13 last season in one of their more exciting games of the year. Maye threw for 238 yards, a touchdown, and an interception, but the Patriots lost, 25-24, to the Indianapolis Colts. New England held a 24-17 lead in the final minute, but lost on a touchdown pass by Anthony Richardson and ensuring two-point conversion by the Colts quarterback with 12 seconds left. Maybe the Patriots will have a little more success in their throwbacks in 2025.
