NTD Photography Competition Extends Its Registration Deadline

Epoch Times3 days ago
Since registration opened this spring, the upcoming 5th NTD International Photography Competition has received entries from nearly 50 countries across five continents in just a few short months. Recently, the organizers announced that the registration deadline will be extended from the original July 31 to Sept. 30, in hopes of encouraging more talented photographers to participate.
The NTD International Photography Competition is one of the international arts and cultural events organized by New Tang Dynasty Television. This competition aims to promote cultural and artistic exchange among photography enthusiasts worldwide, uphold traditional values and aesthetics, and inspire uplifting and meaningful photographs.
'So far, we've received registrations from photographers in 48 countries around the world,' said Lucy Zhou, director of the NTD Competition. 'From the UK and France to India and Iran, from Peru to Algeria—participants come from ... five continents, including [the countries of] China, the United States, and Taiwan.'
Reviving Tradition
The competition is dedicated to reviving traditional aesthetic principles by showcasing kindness, beauty, brightness, and the natural state. It also aims to preserve cultural heritage while providing photographers with a global platform to showcase their talents and share their visual works with a wider audience.
The competition entries are divided into two categories: 'Social Relations and Humanity' and 'Landscape and Nature.'
The 'Social Relations and Humanity' category includes images of human life in its natural state, portraits, folk culture, humor, human-animal interaction, and human-environment interaction. Participants are allowed to adjust brightness, color balance, and sharpness, as long as the final result appears natural. However, no elements may be added, removed, or altered in the content of the photograph.
The 'Landscape and Nature' category includes scenes and subjects in their natural state, as well as architecture and landscapes. Participants are allowed to adjust brightness, color balance, and sharpness, but the final image must retain a natural appearance. Submissions that alter the natural characteristics through post-processing, or that involve adding, deleting, or modifying content elements, will not be accepted.
New Awards
This year's competition has introduced three new special awards: the Best Work Commemorating the 250th Anniversary of American Independence, the Best Sports Photography Award, and the Best Chinese Photographer Award.
Renee Luo, photographer and judge of the NTD Photography Competition, stated that the photographic works from each country possess their own unique characteristics, which are closely tied to the region's geography and cultural heritage.
Luo looks forward to seeing submissions from more countries and regions that reflect their unique cultural characteristics, and she especially encourages Chinese photographers to participate in the competition.
The Prizes
Each category will award the following prizes:
Gold Award: 1 winner per category (2 total), each receiving $5,000 or equivalent value in photography equipment/products, plus a certificate.
Silver Award: 2 winners per category (4 total), each receiving $2,500 or equivalent value in photography equipment/products, plus a certificate.
Bronze Award: 3 winners per category (6 total), each receiving $1,000 or equivalent value in photography equipment/products, plus a certificate.
Honorable Mention: 10 winners per category (20 total), each receiving $300 or equivalent value in photography equipment/products, plus a certificate.
The three special awards—Best Work Commemorating the 250th Anniversary of American Independence, Best Sports Photography Award, and Best Chinese Photographer Award—each carry a prize of $2,000 or equivalent value in photography equipment/products, along with a certificate.

‘Thomas Sully's Philadelphians' Review: A City in Portraiture

Next year—2026—may mark the 250th anniversary of America's founding, but for New Englanders, 2025 is the real quarter millennial of the nation's independence. The soldier who fired 'the shot heard round the world,' as Ralph Waldo Emerson put it, did so on April 19, 1775. Just as skirmishes between minutemen and redcoats in Concord and Lexington, Mass., led to the signing of the Declaration of Independence at the Pennsylvania State House, 2025 commemorations in New England will migrate in 2026 to Philadelphia. The city founded by William Penn not only had facilities—the State House (later Independence Hall) and Carpenters' Hall—large enough to accommodate the Continental Congress and afterward the United States government. At the time, Philadelphia was also the Athens of North America, home to many of America's best minds, elite cultural institutions and distinguished architecture. Peter Conn's book on the Philadelphia subjects of the artist Thomas Sully captures the aristocratic element of the city's early history. W.C. Fields once joked (though the line may be apocryphal) that spending a day in Philadelphia felt like a week. In 1800, a day in Philadelphia would have been too short to enjoy its charms. Mr. Conn, a retired professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania, enlists Sully to highlight the city that hosted the nation's origins partly because the artist, one of America's greatest portraitists, captured what the Founding Fathers saw. He was born in 1783 in Horcastle, England. In 1792 Sully's parents and their nine children emigrated to America, where Thomas followed a circuitous route both to painting and Philadelphia. He lived and worked in the city for more than 60 years. Sully started with historical subjects—he was the first to depict George Washington's 'Passage of the Delaware' (1819). Soon he pivoted to portraits, a reliable way to support himself since he lacked a patron. Sully kept meticulous records—Benjamin Franklin would have been proud. His register lists all of his more than 2,000 paintings. Extant papers also reveal that he asked $80 for a head painting, $300 for a waist-up or 'half-length' portrait and $600 for a full-length portrait. An obsession with finances and finding clients did not hinder his talent. Sully's work led to commissions from Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe. Mr. Conn says little about the presidents Sully painted, giving attention instead to the artist's urban surroundings. Two hundred and fifty years removed, some of Sully's neighbors are little remembered today but once held great importance. One such was William Henry Furness (1832), a Unitarian minister, childhood friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson and one of Philadelphia's leading abolitionists.

NTD Invites Photographers to Celebrate America's Birth

Amateurs, students, and professional photographers alike can compete for a new international photography award celebrating an independent America. The NTD International Photography Competition (NIPC) has just announced a special award titled 'Best Work Commemorating the 250th Anniversary of American Independence.' It also announced two new award categories: Best Chinese Photographer and Best Sports Photography. Each of these award's winners will receive $2,000 in cash or $2,000 worth of photography products and equipment. Now in its fifth iteration, the NIPC invites photographers around the world to enter uplifting images of 'beautiful moments.' Amateur and professional photographers who enter two competition categories, Social Relations & Humanity and Nature & Landscape, will compete for the $5,000 Gold Award or $5,000 worth of photography products and equipment. The NIPC, hosted by The Epoch Times' sister media outlet NTD, is one in a series of international art and cultural competitions that celebrate time-honored traditions. The competition's mission is to 'preserve traditional aesthetics,' so each entry must be free of digital editing. However, photographers can adjust the brightness, sharpness, and color balance of their images. The NIPC focuses on photographers' technical skills and manual dexterity, including hand-eye skills when setting up a shot. It invites entrants to submit luminous, naturalistic images that depict beauty and kindness. 'Morning Scene' by Chee-Eam Chua (Malaysia).
