Britain will lower its voting age to 16 in bid to strengthen democracy

News183 days ago
London, Jul 17 (AP) Britain will lower the voting age from 18 to 16 before the next national election as part of measures to increase democratic participation, the government announced Thursday.
The centre-left Labour Party pledged before it was elected in July 2024 to lower the voting age for elections to Britain's Parliament. Scotland and Wales already let 16 and 17-year-olds vote in local and regional elections.
Britain will join the short list of countries where the voting age is 16, alongside the likes of Ecuador, Austria and Brazil.
The move comes alongside wider reforms that include tightening campaign financing rules to stop shell companies with murky ownership from donating to political parties. Democracy Minister Rushanara Ali said the change would strengthen safeguards against foreign interference in British politics.
The government also said it will introduce automatic voter registration and allow voters to use bank cards as a form of identification at polling stations.
The previous Conservative government introduced a requirement for voters to show photo identification in 2022, a measure it said would combat fraud. Critics argued it could disenfranchise millions of voters, particularly the young, the poor and members of ethnic minorities.
Elections watchdog the Electoral Commission has estimated that about 750,000 people did not vote in last year's election because they lacked ID.
Turnout in the 2024 election was 59.7 per cent, the lowest level in more than two decades.
Harry Quilter-Pinner, head of left-leaning think tank the Institute for Public Policy Research, said the changes were 'the biggest reform to our electoral system since 1969," when the voting age was lowered to 18 from 21.
The changes must be approved by Parliament. The next national election must be held by 2029.
'For too long public trust in our democracy has been damaged and faith in our institutions has been allowed to decline," Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said. 'We are taking action to break down barriers to participation that will ensure more people have the opportunity to engage in UK democracy." (AP) SKS RD RD

AP An off-duty US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent was shot late Saturday night during an attempted robbery in New York City's Riverside Park, police said. Officials believe the incident was random and not related to the agent's job. According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, 21-year-old Miguel Mora is a person of interest in the case. He was hospitalised with gunshot wounds believed to have been sustained during the encounter and is expected to be arrested. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The CBP agent was sitting by the water in Manhattan when two men approached him on a scooter. One of them pulled a gun. The agent, realising he was being robbed, drew his own weapon. A shootout followed. The agent was shot in the face and forearm, while the gunman was also injured. Both suspects fled the scene. 'Last night, in New York City, an incredible CBP Officer was shot in the face by an Illegal Alien Monster freed into the Country under Joe Biden. He was apprehended at the Border in April 2023 but, instead of being deported, was RELEASED. The CBP Officer bravely fought off his attacker, despite his wounds, demonstrating enormous Skill and Courage,' US President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social. The entire incident was captured on CCTV, helping investigators identify Mora as the shooter. He later arrived at Bronx Care Hospital with gunshot wounds matching those seen on the video. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said he visited the wounded agent in hospital. His condition has not been disclosed. Commissioner Tisch said Mora is in the U.S. illegally, having crossed the border through Arizona in 2023. He has a criminal history, including two domestic violence arrests, an active warrant for missing a court date, and is wanted for a robbery in December 2024 and a stabbing in January 2025. 'Bibi acted like a madman': Trump team grows wary of 'child' Netanyahu's aggression in Syria, says report

The Trump administration is growing increasingly uneasy with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's aggressive military actions in the region, particularly his recent strikes in Syria, according to a report. A White House official described Bibi as 'a child,' saying he 'acted like a madman.' read more President Donald Trump and Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrive for a news conference in the East Room of the White House, on Feb. 4, 2025, in Washington. AP File The Trump administration is increasingly frustrated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, known as 'Bibi', over his aggressive stance in the conflict with Syria, Axios has reported. A White House official, speaking to Axios, said, 'Bibi acted like a madman. He bombs everything all the time. This could undermine what Trump is trying to do,' referring to a recent Israeli strike on the Syrian presidential palace. The remarks come amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes in Damascus and southern Syria, where government forces have also been targeted. In a separate incident, Israeli forces reportedly struck the Holy Family Catholic Church compound, the only Catholic church in the Gaza Strip. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD According to another US official, President Donald Trump personally phoned Netanyahu following the Gaza church strike and demanded an explanation. 'The feeling is that every day there is something new. What the f***?' the official told Axios. These comments follow Netanyahu's third visit to the United States in recent weeks, during which he held multiple meetings with Trump, including a dinner at the White House. However, despite the high-level engagement, there was no breakthrough in efforts to end the Gaza war. A third White House official told Axios that scepticism towards Netanyahu is growing within the Trump team, describing the Israeli leader as 'too impulsive and too disruptive.' 'Netanyahu is sometimes like a child who just won't behave,' the official added. Israeli government spokesperson Ziv Agmon did not respond to the remarks attributed to Trump and his aides. In the wake of the Israeli strike in Syria, the United States intervened to ease tensions. The U.S. Ambassador to Turkey announced a ceasefire agreement between the parties involved. While the ceasefire temporarily paused further escalation, senior Trump administration officials remain alarmed by Netanyahu's broader regional policies, Axios reported, citing six U.S. sources. Japans governing coalition loses upper house election

Agency: Tokyo, Jul 21 (AP) Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's ruling coalition failed to secure a majority in the 248-seat upper house in a crucial parliamentary election, Japan's NHK public television said Monday. Ishiba's Liberal Democratic Party and its junior coalition partner Komeito needed to win 50 seats on top of the 75 seats they already have to reach the goal. With two more seats to be decided, the coalition had only 46 seats. The loss is another blow to Ishiba's coalition, making it a minority in both houses following its October defeat in the lower house election, and worsening Japan's political instability. It was the first time the LDP has lost a majority in both houses of parliament since the party's foundation in 1955. Ishiba on Sunday expressed determination to stay on to tackle challenges such as US tariff threats, but he could face calls from within his party to step down or find another coalition partner.
