Bull bars on cars started getting popular in the 1950s. At first they were a practical way to keep wildlife from embedding itself in your grille, but because some people thought they looked cool, they became fashionable.
Incredibly, protective steel bars on watches came along a lot earlier than the automotive versions. Before the dawn of the 20th century, the watch was a delicate item carried in the breast pocket. Then with the outbreak of WW2, the watch became a vital piece of battle kit and needed to get tough quickly. Most early war watches were pocket watches that were adapted by adding wrist straps and rudimentary protective bars across the face.

As watch companies started making watches specifically for the wrist, they began to think of ever more ingenious ways to keep them safe, and war was not the only motivator. In 1931, Jaeger-LeCoultre made the Reverso, a watch where the whole case flips over to keep the dial side protected during particularly vigorous games of polo. The watch continues to be a big seller today.
Improvement in material technology over the past century means that watches are no longer the fragile flowers they once were. It is hard these days to find a watch without a decent level of water resistance. And most decent ones have scratch resistant sapphire crystals that can take a knock.

In the unlikely event you choose a watch not fitted with bull bars, it is important to consider the quality of your glass. Scratch resistant sapphire crystal is really the only choice to go for and most decent watchmakers know it is well worth the extra cost. Various types of reinforced glass are second best, but avoid acrylic as it is only marginally more scratch resistant than a decent bar of soap.

Watch More The Polestar 7 will be the second model assembled at the newly-constructed Kosice plant, following a yet-to-be-announced Volvo. The plant itself has been under construction since 2023, and targets annual production capacity of 250,000 vehicles when completed. All of those vehicles will be electric, according to Volvo. Component Sharing Continues As Well Source: Volvo In addition to a production site, the Polestar 7 will share a 'common technology base' with the upcoming Volvo EX60 and another one of that brand's new models, according to Volvo. That includes Volvo's next-generation motors and battery tech, including cell-to-body tech that mounts cells directly to the body structure, as well as mega-casting construction in which said structure is made from fewer, larger pieces for simplified assembly. The Polestar 7 will also share the Superset computing and software stack with the larger Polestar 3 and Volvo EX90, as well as the EX60 and the upcoming Volvo ES90 sedan. The stack is intended to make it easier to push new software-based features and updates. Its first production model, the handsome Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid coupe, was built at a dedicated factory in Chengdu, China. But its first volume model, the Polestar 2, is built at a Volvo plant in that country. The Polestar 2 is also based on the same Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) as the Volvo XC40, EX40, and EC40. Similarly, the Polestar 3 shares the SPA2 platform with the Volvo EX90, and U.S.-market vehicles are built alongside the EX90 at Volvo's South Carolina plant. Polestar 4 production for most markets is handled in China, but for the U.S., it's built at a Renault plant in Busan, South Korea, under a complicated arrangement responding to Biden Administration trade policies that disadvantaged China-made EVs. The Trump Administration's current global trade war could make it all for nought, though. The Polestar 5, a sleek fastback targeting the Porsche Taycan, and the Polestar 6, a sports car, are also in the queue, although production sites haven't been announced. Sadly, that time has come to an end, as new order guide data obtained by CarsDirect reveals that the diminutive crossover will be hit with a 5.37% increase in base form, adding $1,100 to its sticker. Other trims are less severely impacted, but they've all gone up by between 1.76% and 3.27%. Let's see what those figures mean in dollars for the cheapest new Chevrolet currently on sale. Similarly, both the 2RS and the ACTIV trims will cost $25,300, with both seeing an $800 inflation. Sadly, the order guide data does not reveal any additional features for the extra outlay, but new exterior paint colors and minor accessories are expected. Chevy Makes It Tougher To Choose The new pricing brings Chevrolet's smallest crossover closer in price to its next smallest, the Trailblazer, which starts at $23,000 for 2026, or just $1,400 higher than the Trax. As noted by CarsDirect, the gulf between the two subcompact SUVs was previously $2,600, and as this gulf closes, some buyers may find themselves more attracted to the added features of the Trailblazer. Since before its last redesign, rumors of the Trax's imminent discontinuation have repeatedly surfaced, but it's not gone yet.
