
U.S. military spent $6 billion in bonuses over three years to fix recruitment process
The Army has seen the greatest recruiting struggles over the past decade, and by using a range of new programs and policies, has had one of the largest comebacks. The Navy has had the most trouble more recently, and took a number of steps to expand those eligible for service and spend more in bonuses.

While the Army spends hundreds of millions each year to recruit troops, it also has relied on an array of new programs and policies to woo young people. A key driver of the Army's rebound has been its decision to create the Future Soldier Prep Course at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, in August 2022.

That program gives lower-performing recruits up to 90 days of academic or fitness instruction to help them meet military standards and move on to basic training. It has resulted in thousands of enlistments.

The Air Force increased its spending on recruiting bonuses in 2023 as it also struggled to overcome shortfalls, but lowered the amount the following year. The payments were for jobs including munitions systems, aircraft maintenance and security forces. The Space Force does not currently authorize enlistment bonuses.

The Marine Corps and the tiny Space Force have consistently hit their recruiting goals, although the Marines had to dig deep into their pool of delayed entry candidates in 2022 to meet their target. The Corps, which is much smaller than the Army and Air Force, spends the least on bonuses and tends to spread the amount among a larger number of service members.

Maj. Jacoby Getty, a Marine spokesman, said the spike in retention bonuses from $126 million in 2023 to $201 million in 2024 was because Marines were allowed to re-enlist a year early for the first time. More than 7,000 Marines got bonuses as a result, a jump of nearly 2,200 over the previous year.

When asked about bonuses in 2023, Gen. Eric Smith, the Marine commandant, famously told a naval conference that 'your bonus is you get to call yourself a Marine.'

The services tailor their recruiting and retention money to bolster harder-to-fill jobs, including cyber, intelligence and special operations forces. The Army and Marine Corps also use the money to woo troops to some combat, armour and artillery jobs.

New U.S. visa integrity fee to affect some travellers including from Canada

(Graham Hughes / The Canadian Press) Some people travelling to the United States from countries including Canada will have to pay a 'visa integrity fee' of US$250, but an immigration lawyer says most Canadian citizens won't be affected. 'This one won't hit Canadian citizens too hard, and they can continue to enter the United States as usual,' Rosanna Berardi, managing partner of Berardi Immigration Law, in Buffalo, N.Y., said in a video interview with on Monday, noting Canadian citizens generally just need their passport to enter the U.S. 'Ninety-nine per cent of Canadian citizens are visa exempt. ... Those individuals will not have to pay the new visa integrity fee, unless they are investors or fiancés of U.S. citizens.' The visa integrity fee will apply to Canadian permanent residents entering the U.S. both by land and air who are not American citizens or who were not born from Visa Waiver Program countries, Berardi added. People who have a valid Electronic System for Travel Authorization through the Visa Waiver Program can stay in the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa, according to the U.S. government's website. The fee is part of the Trump administration's spending legislation called the 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act,' which became law on July 4. The U.S. government didn't state when the fee would go into effect. The US$250 fee would be for the current federal fiscal year, the act states. It may be adjusted annually for inflation and won't be waived or reduced, according to the act. Visitors to the U.S. may be reimbursed for the fee after their non-immigrant visa expires under certain conditions, the act states. For instance, people may get their money back if they followed all conditions under the visa, such as not accepting unauthorized employment. When asked for more details about the new fee on Monday, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security wrote in an email: 'President Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill provides the necessary policies and resources to restore integrity in our nation's immigration system. The visa integrity fee requires cross-agency coordination before implementation.' A U.S. State Department spokesperson wrote in an email to on Monday that the fee is part of the Trump administration's efforts to help strengthen immigration enforcement, deter visa overstays and fund border security. 'We will provide more information regarding the implementation and impact of the law for the Department of State as soon as practicable,' a spokesperson wrote. Subway appoints former Burger King executive as CEO

Prior to that, he held several leadership positions in Burger King, including executive vice president, and chief brand and operations officer. Fitzpatrick replaces John Chidsey, who stepped down at the end of last year after five years at the helm. The company said Fitzpatrick will work with interim CEO Carrie Walsh during the transition.
