‘I'm not convinced you really understand how inappropriate this was and I don't think you feel sorry about it'

A drunken passenger had to be strapped down into his seat after downing half a bottle of rum. Mohammed Ridwan Ali, 28, was on a flight from Bangladesh to Manchester Airport when he began arguing with his sister. Things escalated, with Ali becoming abusive with other passengers and 'staggering' around the plane. Manchester Crown Court heard that had to be 'restrained' in his seat until he was met at the airport by officers from Greater Manchester Police. 'It was reported that he had been disruptive during the flight,' she said. As officers arrested him at the gate, they found him to be 'agitated' and smelling strongly of alcohol. They also said his eyes were glazed and his speech was slurred. 'The crew reported that the defendant was consuming alcohol during the flight. He then had a verbal disagreement with his sister. At the point of the verbal altercation, he became volatile and shouted at other passengers and was unsteady on his feet,' said Ms Fradley. 'They decided to restrain him for the remainder of the flight.' Later when the crew searched his bag they found a 1.5 litre bottle of Captain Morgan's which was half empty. No statements were given by the crew at the time, but they told officers they 'simply wished for the defendant to be removed from the aircraft'. Representing Ali, Olivia Davin, said he was 'embarrassed and ashamed'. 'He tells me he was stabbed to the chest in July last year, was in a coma, then received intense physiotherapy to relearn how to walk again,' she said. He suffered two cardiac arrests at the time. As a result he has since 'self medicated' with alcohol, the barrister added. She described the incident as a 'wake-up call'. 'You had to be tied down to your seat. They would not have done that if it wasn't absolutely necessary.' Ali, of Elsdon Road, Longsight, was handed 12 weeks imprisonment which was suspended for a year. He must also complete 10 rehabilitation activity requirements, an alcohol treatment programme and pay a £250 fine. He had previously pleaded guilty to entering an aircraft when drunk.

9-year-old girl who died after incident at Hersheypark Boardwalk identified

Members of the Bhutanese Community in Harrisburg confirmed the identity of the 9-year-old girl who died at The Boardwalk at Hersheypark on July 24. Sophia Subedi, who has lived in Harrisburg since 2022, was found by Boardwalk lifeguards at the wave pool within the Boardwalk area. Subedi was transported to Penn State Health Hershey Medical Center, where officials said the child did not recover. "A bright, kind, and loving young girl, Sophia brought joy and light to everyone who knew her," a family representative said in a statement. "Her sudden loss has left our entire community in grief." Subedi was the first Hersheypark guest to die in the park's 119-year history. Her cause of death has not been released as of Monday morning. Subedi was born in 2016 in Mount Carmel, Columbus, Ohio. She was preparing to start fourth grade at North Side Elementary School in the Central Dauphin School District. A GoFundMe has been created by friends and community members in support of the Subedi family, according to representatives. A funeral and memorial service for Sophia Subedi is expected to take place Wednesday at the Jesse H. Geigle Funeral Home in Harrisburg. "We hope to turn this loss into a legacy — perhaps by supporting children's safety initiatives, advocating for awareness, or creating a small space in her name where kids and families can feel safe, loved, and connected," representatives said on the GoFundMe page. Hershey Entertainment officials said they will be conducting a "thorough internal review" of the incident in the coming days, and will cooperate fully with authorities. "The safety of our guests has always been our highest priority. In the coming days, we will conduct a thorough internal review and cooperate fully with authorities. "Our hearts break for this child and the child's family. We extend our deepest condolences for their loss. Out of respect for their privacy, we will not release any personal details at this time," John Lawn, CEO, Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company, said in a statement Thursday. The wave pool was closed Friday after the incident. Hershey officials said that there were 10 lifeguards specifically dedicated to the wave pool at the time of the incident. The wave pool has since been reopened, according to officials. The Derry Township Police Department issued a statement Friday saying they are assisting Hersheypark and the Dauphin County Coroner's Office with their review into Sophia Subedi's death. "We are still on the early stages of this process, and we are working to gather all of the facts in the incident," police said. "Our thoughts and our hearts are with the family and friends of this young life, lost too soon." Hersheypark officials said there were over 100 Ellis & Associates-trained lifeguards in the Boardwalk area at the time of the incident. The park employs 19 Certified Lifeguard Instructors and one Instructor Trainer to "ensure all team members meet rigorous safety standards." This is an ongoing story. Please check back for updates. Jury in Manchester Airport case sent out to consider verdicts

The jury in the trial of two brothers accused over assaults on police officers at Manchester Airport has been sent out to consider its verdicts. Pc Zachary Marsden, Pc Lydia Ward and Pc Ellie Cook approached Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 20, at a ticket machine after a report that a male fitting his description had headbutted a customer at Starbucks cafe in T2 arrivals on July 23 last year. Amaaz allegedly resisted, and his brother, Muhammad Amaad, 26, is then said to have intervened as the prosecution said they inflicted a 'high level of violence' on the Greater Manchester Police officers. The Crown say CCTV footage showed Amaaz threw 10 punches, which included one to the face of Pc Ward that knocked her to the floor, and that Amaad aimed six punches at firearms officer Pc Marsden. Amaaz is also said to have kicked Pc Marsden and twice struck fellow firearms officer Pc Cook with his elbow. He is said to have punched Pc Marsden from behind and then had hold of him before Pc Cook discharged her Taser device. Mobile phone footage of a kick and stamp by Pc Marsden as Amaaz lay on the floor was shared on social media and went viral. Amaaz and Amaad, both from Rochdale, Greater Manchester, told the court they acted in lawful self-defence, or in defence of the other. Giving evidence at Liverpool Crown Court, Amaaz said he feared the 'lunatic' male officer would 'batter him to death' and Amaad said he believed he was under attack. The defence said the officers used 'unlawful force' as they grabbed Amaaz from behind without announcing themselves. Amaaz is alleged to have assaulted Pc Marsden and Pc Ward, causing them actual bodily harm. He is also accused of the assault of emergency worker Pc Cook, and the earlier assault by beating of a member of the public, Abdulkareem Ismaeil, at a Starbucks cafe in T2 arrivals – in which he also claimed he was acting in self-defence Amaad is alleged to have assaulted Pc Marsden, causing actual bodily harm.
