Springy, Speedy Skillet Gnocchi

Springy, Speedy Skillet Gnocchi

New York Times21-04-2025
Tejal here, filling in for Melissa.
What did I cook last week? I will tell you the truth: so many strange and delicious quesadillas for me and my toddler, built from a mix of restaurant and home cooked leftovers, held together by optimism and melted cheese.
There were quesadillas with beans, roast chicken, pickled turnips and herbs. Quesadillas with sesame snap pea chicken salad. Quesadillas with white sweet potatoes (and a smear of peanut-sesame salsa for me). Quesadillas with mashed bananas, honey and quesillo.
Now my stash of flour tortillas from Homestate is gone, and so are the beautiful blue, red and yellow corn tortillas I like to get from Komal. Quesadilla Week is officially over. New week, new scheme.
Shelf-stable gnocchi is one of those ingredients I'd never tried before I was a parent. If I was going to have potato gnocchi at home, then I was going to roast potatoes, wait for them to cool a bit, push them through a ricer, and mix the flesh with egg yolks and flour. I was going to shape the dough into little dumplings, boil them, then drain and glaze them in some kind of buttery sauce.
But I found my way to the pleasures of ready gnocchi through Ali Slagle's fast and irresistible recipes. She gets them nice and crisp in sheet pans with sausage and broccoli, and bakes them in cream to make luxurious cheesy gratins. Tonight I've got my eye on her new skillet gnocchi with miso butter and asparagus.

You let the gnocchi get golden brown in a hot pan for a couple of minutes, then add whole asparagus and a mix of butter, white miso and sherry vinegar. It's such a fun and almost salad-y way to eat the first asparagus of the season, keeping it really sweet and crisp. Mix some arugula leaves in just at the end and the dish is ready in 15 minutes — just the thing if you're coming off a quesadilla week.

18 Of Our Favorite Jelly Shoes For Peak Summer Vibes

It's official—the jelly sandal is the shoe of the season. While there's a decent chance you had a pair in elementary school, the updated versions are sophisticated while maintaining a nostalgic, lighthearted feel. A good pair of jelly shoes is comfortable, versatile and an easy way to incorporate a quintessential summer trend into your wardrobe without necessarily having to make a major spending decision. The best jelly sandals complement a wide variety of summer outfits, and they have a playful, ... More nostalgic feel. ILLUSTRATION: FORBES / PHOTO: RETAILERS The fashion revival isn't showing any signs of slowing down, either. 'Jellies are the ultimate neutral,' says personal stylist Michelle McCool of McCool Style, who adds that they're a stylish complement to everything from denim shorts to linen dresses to printed maxis. We rounded up all the best jelly shoes for women, including rubber net styles, pastel Mary Janes and waterproof fisherman platforms, that offer a carefree vibe and will earn you serious style points. (For more summer shoe styles, check out our stories on the best slides for women and the most comfortable wedges.) Brazilian shoe brand Melissa was founded in 1979 and is notorious for its wide range of jelly designs (this pair comes in more than 25 colors). New York City stylist Gina Donnelly, who also buys Melissa jellies for her daughter, highly recommends this pair. 'Not only are they eco-friendly, they're comfortable, stylish and affordable,' she says. 'I bought my first pair at a high-end luxury pool resort in Las Vegas, but proceeded to wear them throughout the streets of NYC, St. Tropez and even my hometown of Kansas City—all while getting stopped with compliments on how great the shoes are.' Anthropologie Jeffrey Campbell Jellz Caged Slip On Shoes The caged lattice design of this pull-on pair offers just enough peek-a-boo for your pedicure. They come in an impressive range of nine colors, so you can have a pair for every day of the week, and then some. Reviewers say they're comfy, true to size and don't cause rubbing. Shopbop Ancient Greek Sandals Iro Jelly Flats Ancient Greek's take on the jelly shoe features a small lattice pattern. This pair is a favorite of Nicole Kwass, personal stylist with Ready To Where. The nude and clear go-with-everything shades act to elongate the leg, while the bright options of this style—including pink and blue—look great as a pop of color with white outfits. TKees initially gained popularity for its dressy take on flip flops, and now the brand has dozens of summer sandals that can be dressed up or down, like this barely there pair with jelly straps. We also love the Jelly Joey and Jelly Valerie styles for their unique strap patterns and vibrant colorways. Macy's Dolce Vita Julio Sandal This translucent pair has wide dual-buckle closures on the vamp that are adjustable for comfort. Reviewers say they have a supportive feel and plush cushioning, and they don't cause feet to sweat. Fisherman styles are particularly comfortable to wear because the wide, adjustable strap at the ankle allows for a secure fit. The crayon blue and vivid begonia colors of this sandal may be our favorite, but they sell out fast. Wild Fable, an in-house Target brand, is a great option to try the jelly trend without a big financial commitment. These come in clear, light pink, turquoise and red, but certain sizes tend to sell out fast. To note: Some say they run large. Bloomingdales Sam Edelman Michaela Jelly Mary Jane This charming pair brings casual summer vibes but it's also office-appropriate. It has an adjustable buckle, comfortable rounded toe and a cork footbed to absorb shock while walking. The Michaela Mary Jane comes in six colors, including versatile clear and a pretty soft blue. Vince excels at sleek sophistication. Kwass recommends this slide, which is a dressed-up take on the jelly shoe's casual construction. It has a padded leather footbed for additional comfort, and it also comes in dark amber and clear if you're looking for a transparent PVC shade. Jimmy Choo Jimmy Choo The Jelly Ballerina Flat Jimmy Choo's romantic take on the jelly ballet flat features an intricate, unexpected cutout pattern and crystal embellishments across the strap. This pair is a favorite of McCool's, who says, 'these are not your childhood sweaty-feet-in-plastic jellies—they're breathable with an open weave design.' They come in clear as well as Easter egg colors, and they have a comfy, padded footbed. Shopbop Tory Burch Mellow Mary Jane Jelly Flats For an elevated feel, Tory Burch's jelly Mary Jane reads dressy, with a push stud closure, and the lattice, open back design keeps feet cool. These come in brown, black and white. This open toe style offers more breathability, and the faux leather accent gives it visual interest. The upper strap is also adjustable for a comfortable fit at your arch. Style them with denim or crisp cotton poplin on hot summer days. If you gravitate toward platform styles or you're just looking for a jelly sandal to give you more height, Melissa's Possession Platform is a bestseller for its elevated silhouette, lightweight feel and flexible construction. It comes in neutrals like beige and black, but we also love the soft pastel green. Nordstrom Veronica Beard Tia Jelly Slide Sandal For times when you're looking for a little lift, Veronica Beard has reimagined jellies with a 2.5-inch kitten heel and a PVC vamp. 'I'm styling this shoe with all the brightly colored wedding dress guest dresses,' says McCool. It comes in five wearable neutrals, including sand and silver. The best jelly shoes are elevated, fun and never fussy, like this ballet style from The Gap. These come in four colors, although we're partial to this tomato sauce red. Some reviewers say these run large. This pair has a thong silhouette and unexpected petal-shaped heel. 'Chloe's perfect pink thong heel jelly somehow disappears on the foot and goes with everything,' says McCool. 'Pair them with a slouchy pair of shorts and you are the instant cool girl.' These come in baby pink, bright pink, brown and light blue. excels at trendy styles, while making them wearable. This fisherman style comes in four colors. Wear them with cutoffs, a swimsuit and coverup, or dress up a summer sundress. Tuckernuck Loeffler Randall Rhys Jelly Sandals Loeffler Randall's designs toe the lie between classic and unexpected. This twist on a fisherman sandal has sparkly rubber with rhinestone detailing across the bridge and toe for a glamorous spin. And the adjustable ankle strap makes them comfy to wear on days you'll be doing some walking. The Forbes Vetted fashion team spends a lot of time researching, reporting on and testing footwear. We've written about the best wedges for women, the most comfortable heels and the most comfortable flats. We rounded up the best jelly shoes by taking a multi-tiered approach: We compiled shoes from top brands that we like the look of, have tried or want. We also spoke with experts and took user experiences into account. We began by surveying options on the market from reputable brands, including emerging ones as well as established brands. We took recommendations from our fashion team into account, and we spoke with three personal stylists for this story to determine their favorite translucent styles for the season. We evaluated each pair for style as well as size and color availability, and we included pairs that ranged from extremely casual to more dressy. We pored through customer reviews, heavily weighing fit and comfort and only including styles that had mostly positive ratings. 'Jelly shoes are playful, nostalgic, and surprisingly versatile,' says Nicole Kwass, personal stylist with Ready To Where. 'There are so many different variations—I am seeing chunky platform jelly sandals, transparent and iridescent finishes, pops of color jellies, and strappy fisherman styles, which are a true throwback and nod to the pairs we all pined for at The Gap in 90's,' she says. And with all the variety, there is lots to consider when planning your purchase: Straps In many instances, the presence and placement of straps can add to a jelly shoe's comfort by enhancing its fit and preventing rubbing. Ankle straps—like those on fisherman style jellies—offer a secure fit. Slip on jelly styles work well in flexible rubber because they allow feet room to swell when it's hot out. Color Neutral color jellies may seem more wearable because they go with a lot. But the translucent nature of many jelly shoe styles means they can be easily paired with a variety of summer outfits, even in bright or pastel colors. Don't be afraid to purchase them in pink, green or blue for a fun dose of color. How You'll Style Them When buying a shoe, it's always smart to preemptively envision what you'll pair them with in your closet. Jelly sandals go with everything from summer dresses to Bermuda shorts. Kwass also has some styling recommendations: 'For a fun and feminine look, wear strappy or heeled jellies with a flowy sundress or midi skirt,' she says. 'Opt for pastel tones to keep the look soft and dreamy.' 'For an edgier street look, go bold with chunky jelly platforms, wide-leg trousers, and a graphic tee or basic tank,' she says. 'To really lean into the Y2K vibe, wear them with a mini skirt, cropped baby tee, and colorful accessories,' she says. 'Top the look off with a claw clip.' What Are The Best Jelly Shoes? There are lots of amazing pairs available right now. For a versatile fisherman style, we like Melissa's Possession Sandal. Some of our favorite pull-on pairs are Jeffrey Campbell's Jellz Caged Slip On and Ancient Greek's Iro Jelly Flats. If you're looking for a cute jelly Mary Jane, we recommend Sam Edelman's Michaela Jelly Mary Jane. Are Jelly Sandals Comfortable For Walking? They can be, although some cause feet to sweat. Look for pairs with an adjustable strap, flexible rubber or a padded insole like Sam Edelman's Michaela Mary Jane or Dolce Vita's Julio Sandal. Are Jelly Shoes Waterproof? Most are, since the majority are constructed with polyvinyl chlrodie (PVC) or silicone. But some jelly sandals have padded leather footbeds, so they shouldn't be worn in water.

42 Toys That'll Actually Keep Your Kids Busy For A Bit

A Melissa and Doug wooden ice creamery set for tykes who love playing pretend almost as much as they enjoy messily devouring a chocolate ice cream cone. Fans of smaller "scoop and serve ice cream counter" will absolutely squeal with excitement over this bigger (and dare I say, better) version A fashion show–themed play tent complete with bulb lights so the little divas in your life can strut their stuff and show off their fave outfits. America's Next Top Model could never!!! A fan-favorite Step2 water table to pop onto your back patio or front porch, fill with water, and send your little ones out to have the time of their lives playing with spinners, a waterfall, and buckets galore. A splash pad you'll thank your lucky stars for when it's hotter than the sun itself outside and your kids are looking for a way to have fun and cool down. A beginner's drawing book designed to help kids learn how to draw flowers, plants, and botanicals — they'll have the best time learning a new skill and practicing by asking anyone they meet, "What's your favorite flower?" then learning to illustrate it on the spot. Plus, double-sided layering markers that they can use to create all kinds of whimsical artwork. You're going to need to invest in some more magnets to hang all of these beauties on the fridge. A 5-pound bucket of Crayola Air Dry Clay that'll let your tyke moonlight as a pottery-making artiste for a bit — for less than 15 bucks, you'll get a whooooole lot of summer entertainment. I hope you have room on your shelves to display all of their work! A mosaic photo frame kit for your tween who has been getting the redecoration bug — you know, when you start to itch to change the entire look of your bedroom (for most of us, that just meant moving our twin bed to the other side of the room while dripping sweat). Anyways, this cute craft will let them be creative and add some new decor to their space. A beginner's crochet kit complete with everything they'll need to craft their own plush pal to join them on their summer adventures. They can follow along with the step-by-step video tutorial instead of asking you for help every .5 seconds — sounds fantastic, TBH. A light-up flying orb that'll make them feel like tiny David Blaine. It's basically a fidget spinner for tech fiends — it has built-in lighting, a boomerang effect, and can be thrown at a variety of angles and speeds! A Magna-Tiles set that'll surely be a big hit with any budding architect. They can use it to build all kinds of cool 3D structures, then knock 'em down and start again the next day. A classic bin of 790 Lego bricks your little genius can dive into and create anything that comes to mind. A horse? Sure! Car? Why not! A full recreation of Love Island's Casa Amor? Now *that* would be something. Or some sensory "Jelly Blox" that'll keep the younger tykes in your home busy long enough for you to put together an iced coffee and get the summer day started. The kit comes with 20 different blocks they'll love squishing, stacking, and playing with daily. Scavenger hunt cards for the days when it is simply too hot to take your tykes outdoors — it'll send them on a "secret mission" to find "treasure" around the house. (And keep them out of your hair!) A Melissa and Doug On the Go Water Wow! Reusable Water-Reveal Activity Pad you'll want to tell all of your parenting friends about. Fill the water pen, set it up on an outdoor surface, and let your kiddo go to town coloring (and making a wet mess, if they so choose). When the pages dry, they can do it all over again! A 5-in-1 indoor climbing set kids will scream with delight over when they see it for the first time — it comes with a triangle ladder, a ramp, and arch climb, a rocker, and a slide for them to explore. (This is a must-have for rainy days!) Silly Poopy's Hide and Seek — which is pretty much exactly what you'd think it is. It's a rainbow, light-up poop-shaped toy littles can take turns hiding throughout the house. It'll shout out clues and play a song when it's finally found! A Toniebox Audio Player Starter Set, which is essentially a tiny stereo that toddlers can control all on their own, just by swapping out which character magnetically sits on top of it. Each individual figure tells different stories and sings different songs — it's a great way to keep kids entertained without a screen. Waterproof playing cards so your kids can get a fierce game of Go Fish going without worrying if their already-wet-from-the-pool hair drips onto the cards. Or a waterproof version of the beloved Taco, Cat, Goat Cheese, Pizza game — it's a card game you can play with your family for guaranteed giggles and a way to catch your breath from traipsing around in the ocean. A too-cute set of silicone beach toys in, dare I say, rather aesthetically pleasing colors you'll be proud to hand off to your kids for a day of fun in the sun. A massive 160-piece pack of sidewalk chalk they'll be *so* excited over they might just forget to pester you about extra screen time — encourage them to create all kinds of art at the playground or leave funny pictures for passersby. A hook-and-ring game that'll take up minimal space — if you don't have a huge area to work with you'll still be able to set up some fun for your kids. A sea shell art and crafts kit featuring glow-in-the-dark paint for the tiny Picasso in your home that would love nothing more than to create their own beachy masterpiece. A rainbow kite you and your family can break out and live your best Mary Poppins life (as long as there's enough of a breeze). Alexa, play "Let's Go Fly a Kite." A splurge-worthy balance bike that'll have your restless mini-me boppin' out the front door and speeding down the block the minute you say, "OK, FINE!" It'll teach your kiddo to learn how to ride pedal-free (so impressive). An incredibly useful sandbox with a lid that opens up to double as benches for kiddos to sit on while they play. The lid will ensure you can keep it up and running throughout the fall without leaves and other outdoor debris sneaking in. Or a smaller (but equally fun) Step2 sandbox that won't take up as much space in your backyard but will have more than enough room for your minis to play in all afternoon. It comes with a lid to keep the sand dry when not in use (and prevent little critters from hanging out in it overnight). A geode-breaking activity from National Geographic that'll give you and your kids an excuse to pick up a hammer and smash rocks in half. The best part? The cracked-open rocks will reveal stunning crystal centers you can learn about together. A construction-themed folding play set complete with kinetic sand, a dump truck, a working crane, a wrecking ball, and bucket attachments to keep kiddos entertained for houuuuurs — it even includes a carrying kit to contain the mess to one space (ideally). A giant bubble kit, so enchanting, even the most angsty of kids won't be able to resist giving them a go. It even comes with two packets of biodegradable bubble solution and a tips and tricks booklet to help you make the best (and biggest!) bubbles ever. And a bubble machine that'll have your toddler scoffing at the old handheld bubble wands they're used to seeing — this one will take playtime to the next level without filling the house with extra noise. A Step2 Up & Down Roller Coaster your little one will want to ride again and again (and agaaaaaain! Toddlers, man). The ramp and car also fit into the base for easy storage. A 2-in-1 checkers and tic-tac-toe game with checkers on one side and tic-tac-toe on the other, a must-have for any family who would rather exercise their brain muscles. A ring toss set to help all the neighborhood kiddos work on their hand-eye coordinator and encourage some ~friendly~ competition. Flickin' Chicken — a game that will have your family cackling from the first time you play. Players are encouraged to make up their own rules so you'll have a different experience every time. Boredom? I don't know her. Spikeball, an easy-to-transport game that is kinda like volleyball and will have your kids asking you to bring it to every outdoor adventure. A miniature golf set you can use to create a course right in your backyard — no need to spend a bunch of money taking the entire family out for mini golf. You and your kids can get crafty and set up all kinds of challenging obstacles to make it different each time you play. An incredible Step2 canopy play patio complete with a faux grill, a sand table, a water table, and a snack station — it'll make your tyke feel like they're vacationing at an all-inclusive resort whenever they step inside. (Not that they even know what that means, but you do!) Or a kids' BBQ set that'll match the one you cook burgers and hot dogs on regularly during the summer — now they can play alongside you instead of asking, "Is dinner ready yet? Is it ready yet?" It has realistic sounds, lights, and lets out steam like an actual grill! And a bounce house/double waterslide combo, your kids will take one look at and wonder if their wildest dreams have actually come true. They can jump until their little legs get tired, soak each other with water guns, shoot baskets, coast down dual water slides, then take a rest in the pool area.

Who Is Melissa Benoist's Husband, Chris Wood?

Attention everyone who is obsessed with Netflix's new fishery / drug ring drama (it's a genre, okay?) The Waterfront, and is now feeling extremely nosy about the real-life love lives of the cast. Saaame. On that note, we're here to obsess over Melissa Benoist's relationship with her husband Chris Wood, mostly because they are very cute but also pretty low-key. So yes, a deep dive is needed. Urgently! Chris was cast on Supergirl for the second season in 2016, which is where he met Melissa for the first time. Obviously, they hit it off! Pics from that era incoming: Here's a pretty diamond ring for your mood board: Chris and Melissa got married six months later in California and a source told E! News "It was a beautiful setting for a wedding, very peaceful and quiet. The vows were brief and lasted about 15 minutes. There was lots of cheering and applause as it ended." His names Huxley and he was born in 2020! If you haven't seen Supergirl and are convinced Chris looks familiar, it's because he played Kai Parker in season six of The Vampire Diaries, though he's honestly a CW veteran. He was also in the network's show The Carrie Diaries AND Containment. Aka The Flash. As Grant put it, "We went to Elon University together, we were musical theater majors together, and we were very good friends in school." (Their shows even did a crossover episode!) Chris started working with Mental Health America in 2016, and then founded IDONTMIND in 2017, a "nonprofit with a mission to inspire open conversations about mental health and to provide free resources, education, and encouragement for anyone who needs it." Back in December, Deadline reported that Melissa and Chris had been cast in Duo, an upcoming drama from NBC. Here's the description: "When a soft-spoken, blue-collar worker (Wood) and a magnetic performer (Benoist) looking for her next break unexpectedly cross paths, their fateful meeting leads to a partnership that changes them both forever." I'm. IN.
