Man kills minor son after wife leaves him
NEW DELHI: A 10-year-old boy was allegedly killed by his father in outer north Delhi's Narela area on Tuesday, in what police suspect was an act of revenge against his estranged wife. The accused, identified as Narender, is absconding, officials said on Wednesday. According to police, they received information about the recovery of a child's body with visible injury marks on the neck from Narela. The victim had returned home from school when the incident took place. Komal, the boy's mother and a resident of Om Vihar Colony, Narela, told police that she had separated from her husband due to his alcohol and drug addiction. She had been living separately with her two children after frequent domestic disputes, a senior police officer said. On Tuesday, when her younger son failed to return from school, Komal received a call from Narender, who informed her that he had killed the child, police added. A case has been registered under Section 103(1) (murder) of the BNS at the Narela police station. 'The body has been sent for post-mortem and efforts are on to apprehend the accused,' said police. In a separate incident in northeast Delhi's Dayalpur area, five individuals, including two juveniles, were apprehended for allegedly stabbing a man in Chandu Nagar's Bihari Mohalla on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. The victim, Sameer, was attacked after a brief altercation with a group. His friend Mohd Farhan lodged the complaint. Police said further probe is on.

Iraq's top court rejects lawsuits against Kurdish parliament
Also in Iraq PM Sudani welcomes new commander of anti-ISIS coalition Iraq cannot control militias attacking Kurdistan Region, says MP Iraq records 16 new cases of Crimean-Congo fever Iraqi parliament to convene on Kurdistan Region drone attacks A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iraq's Federal Supreme Court on Monday dismissed two lawsuits seeking the dissolution of the Kurdistan Region's parliament, ruling that the matter falls outside its jurisdiction. 'Both lawsuits were rejected by the Federal Supreme Court on the grounds that the issue is not within the jurisdiction of the court,' Omar Gulpi, one of the plaintiffs and a member of the opposition Kurdistan Justice Group (Komal), told Rudaw on Monday. His lawsuit was filed with the federal court against the Kurdistan parliament, calling for the annulment of the 2024 regional election results over its failure to convene. A similar lawsuit was filed by the head of the New Generation Movement's (NGM) bloc in the Iraqi parliament, Srwa Abdulwahid, and two other members of the party, calling for the dissolution of the Kurdish legislature. The NGM is the strongest opposition party in the Kurdistan Region. Komal leader Ali Bapir in June criticized the current Kurdish parliament as lacking legitimacy due to alleged electoral fraud. Despite this, he told Rudaw that convening it to form a new government would still serve the public interest. The Kurdistan Region held delayed parliamentary elections in October 2024, two years after the original date. The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) won 39 out of 100 seats, followed by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) with 23. As no party achieved a majority, a governing coalition is required, as has been customary. Amid the impasse, lawmakers in the Kurdish parliament - who are seemingly awaiting the outcome of the government formation talks between the KDP and the PUK - have convened only once in December, without electing a speaker or deputies. The session ended with no significant decisions and was adjourned indefinitely. Hastyar Qadir and Nahro Mohammed contributed to this report.

Blasphemy cases: IHC orders govt to constitute commission within 30 days
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC), Tuesday, directed the federal government to constitute a commission within 30 days to probe blasphemy cases. A single bench of IHC comprising Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan issued the directions in petitions filed by the victim families seeking formation of judicial commission to investigate the cases. The bench directed the federal government to form a commission within 30 days to investigate blasphemy cases. It also directed that the commission formed by the federal government must complete its proceedings within four months. In this matter, the victim families, represented by advocates, Abid Saqi and Usman Warraich, had petitioned the high court for the formation of a judicial commission. They mentioned a report by the Punjab Special Branch titled 'The Blasphemy Business'. The report alleged that a suspicious gang had been entrapping youth in blasphemy cases and extorting money from them after filing complaints with the FIA in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. During the hearing, an additional director of the National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency informed the court that Komal Ismail's identity card had been blocked and four SIM cards are registered on Komal's ID card but none of the numbers have been active since November. Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan noted that the petition was filed on September 14 and Komal went missing in November. The additional director of NCCIA assured the court that Komal has not left the country and remains in Pakistan. When the judge asked that if Komal's name had been placed on the Exit Control List (ECL), the Additional Director confirmed that it had and search efforts are continuing. Justice Ishaq said that Komal's safety is a serious concern and asked what measures the agency could take to protect her life. Advocate Hadi Ali Chatha informed the bench that the court had requested WhatsApp data for three numbers from cellular network companies. However, lawyers representing the cellular companies stated that WhatsApp call detail records (CDRs) are not available, and phone number CDRs are only retained for one year. The judge said that if the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has the authority, the commission could request the information, stressing the importance due to the lives at stake. After hearing the arguments, Justice Ishaq said that the court's role was to determine whether sufficient material exists to form the commission and accepted the petitions directing the government to form the commission within 30 days and the commission must complete its work within four months but may request additional time from the court if needed. In the petition, the petitioners asserted that this gang is the complainant in nearly 90 per cent of blasphemy cases registered by the FIA. It added that operating under the name 'Legal Commission on Blasphemy,' the group is said to be consisted of both men and women targeting poor and lower middle class Muslim families. They revealed that a concerning pattern emerges in the FIRs: out of over 400 alleged victims, 70 per cent are young men and women in their twenties or younger while many of the victims are professionals, including engineers, Hafiz-e-Quran, and degree holders in various fields. They further said that they had approached the federal government with a formal request dated August 4, 2024, seeking the formation of an inquiry commission on the Special Branch's report. However, no action has been taken to date. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Former Komal lawmaker released hours after arrest in Sulaimani
Also in Kurdistan KDP, PUK top-level delegations meet to discuss new cabinet, Baghdad disputes Suicide drone shot down near Erbil airport: Kurdish counterterrorism KDP, PUK leaders to meet over Erbil-Baghdad tensions, KRG cabinet formation KRG meets to resolve financial disputes with Baghdad A+ A- ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Sabah Barzanji, a former lawmaker from the Kurdistan Justice Group (Komal) and a prominent religious figure, was released on Sunday after being arrested the night before in Sulaimani. 'Dr. Sabah Barzanji was released at noon today,' a source from Sulaimani security forces told Rudaw on condition of anonymity. Abdulsattar Majid, a Kurdistan parliament lawmaker and member of Komal's Supreme Council, also confirmed the release, saying, 'It is true, and we have also been informed of Dr. Sabah's release.' Shwan Raber, another senior figure from Komal, had told Rudaw earlier in the day, 'We were told he would be released today.' Barzanji served in the Kurdistan parliament's third term and is currently a university professor and senior Komal member. No official reason has been announced for the arrest. Majid said, 'No official explanation has been given to us.' Two other senior officials from the group similarly said, 'So far, the reason has not been clarified for us.' Sulaimani police spokesperson Sarkawt Ahmed said earlier Sunday that authorities were not aware of the arrest and that 'he was not arrested by us.' In early July, the Erbil Investigative Court issued an arrest warrant for Ahmed Haji Rashid, another former Komal lawmaker. The warrant was sent to a Sulaimani court for implementation, but the reason was not made public. Rashid, however, has been charged under Article 226 of the Iraqi Penal Code, which criminalizes insulting government institutions. He has been openly critical of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). In late June, ahead of planned protests over unpaid public salaries, security forces in Sulaimani arrested a number of opposition lawmakers and journalists. At the time, Sulaimani's Asayish said the arrests were meant to thwart 'a plan by some troublemakers who intended to exploit the demonstrations… to disrupt peace and stability.' The Asayish added that while some of those detained were unaware of the plan, the arrests were carried out 'to protect their lives, as well as those of other protestors and dissatisfied citizens,' and issued an apology.
