Gauteng MEC calls for an end to taxi violence amid rising tensions

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has strongly condemned the recent spike in taxi-related violence in the province, warning that it endangers lives and undermines efforts to create a secure public transport system. Despite peace pledges from industry leaders, deadly clashes between rival taxi associations continue to erupt across the region.
In recent weeks, several violent incidents, including fatal shootings of taxi drivers and marshals, have disrupted services and spread fear among commuters and operators.
Diale-Tlabela pointed to ongoing route disputes as the root cause, stating that this bloodshed, connected to conflicts over routes between competing taxi associations, has created an environment of fear and insecurity for passengers, operators, and innocent people.
She expressed disappointment in the failure of taxi industry leaders to uphold their commitments to peace.
'These acts of violence in the taxi industry are not only criminal but also a direct betrayal of the commitments made by the taxi industry leadership to uphold peace and prioritise the safety of commuters and communities,' the MEC said.
The provincial government has intensified engagements with key industry stakeholders, including the Gauteng National Taxi Alliance (GNTA) and the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO). These talks have resulted in the formation of a Conflict Resolution Committee aimed at addressing disputes through dialogue and mediation rather than violence.
Diale-Tlabela made it clear that the government expects accountability.
'We call upon the leadership of taxi associations to honour their pledges, take responsibility, and assist in identifying those who continue to bring the industry into disrepute,' she said.
'Peace, discipline, and accountability must be the cornerstones of the taxi industry.'
Warning of legal consequences, the MEC stressed that authorities would not hesitate to take action against those fuelling the violence.
'The safety of our citizens and the stability of public transport cannot be compromised. We urge all affected stakeholders to recommit to a peaceful and stable environment.'

Two South Africans linked to R10.5m robbery in Zimbabwe

In an unexpected twist, Zimbabwean authorities are now on the hunt for two South African nationals who are believed to be part of a gang that pulled off a heist involving over R10 million. The revelation came to light during a court hearing in Harare on Monday, where the driver of the victim, prominent businessman and former Dynamos Football Club chairman Rafiq Adam, appeared facing armed robbery charges. The accused, 35-year-old Samson Gora, is alleged to have tipped off the robbers about large sums of money kept at Adam's company offices in central Harare. Reports are that the robbers included two Zimbabweans and two South Africans. According to Zimbabwe's National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Gora passed on detailed information about the $600 000 (roughly R10.5 million) stored at Merchantman Enterprises, Adam's business in the CBD. 'The accused, Samson Gora, provided details about the cash being kept at the premises to his accomplices,' said state prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi. 'The robbery was then executed by four men, including the two foreign nationals not known to Gora.' The robbery took place on 16 June 2025. Prosecutors say four men stormed the building armed with a pistol and attacked Adam while he sat at reception. He was struck on the head with the firearm, and the gang demanded money and access to the office safe. While the robbers only took about $500 (R8 800) from Adam directly, they then accessed the safe and made off with the full $600 000 (R10.5 million). They also grabbed high-end gadgets, including an iPhone 13 Pro Max, a Samsung Fold, and phones belonging to other employees, some of which were later dumped during their getaway along a busy Harare street. Gora was arrested on 27 June following a tip-off to Zimbabwe's CID Homicide Unit. Under interrogation, he reportedly confessed to leaking the information to the gang. He admitted to receiving $10 000 (R175 000) as his share from a man identified as Nyengerayi Chikwadze, alias Chipato. Chikwadze, in turn, is said to have split the money with fellow Zimbabwean Oscar Muchenje and the two unnamed South African nationals, whose whereabouts remain unknown. According to iHarare , police have since recovered $4 400 (R77 500) in cash and seized multiple Samsung smartphones and a Toyota Hiace vehicle believed to have been bought with proceeds from the heist. Gora also led police to his brother, Willard Gora, where part of the stash had been hidden. The case has raised eyebrows across the region, particularly because South Africans are now being sought in Zimbabwe for a high-profile crime. It's a reversal of the usual narrative, where Zimbabweans are often accused of being involved in criminal activity across the Limpopo. Zimbabwean authorities have launched a full-scale manhunt for the two South African suspects, who have not yet been publicly named. Gora, meanwhile, has been remanded in custody until 16 July as investigations continue. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . Mbenenge's legal team accuses gender expert of omitting texts sent by Mengo

JOHANNESBURG - Advocate Muzi Sikhakhane has accused research associate at Wits University, Lisa Vetten, of deliberately omitting texts sent by high court secretary, Andiswa Mengo, in which she initiated conversations with Eastern Cape Judge President, Selby Mbenenge. Sikhakhane cross-examined Vetten before the Judicial Conduct Tribunal sitting in Johannesburg and is tasked with investigating the sexual harassment allegations that Mengo has made against the top judge. In some interactions between the pair, Mengo sent Mbenenge messages after work hours, including one where she called him "cute" at 10:20 pm. ALSO READ: Vetten previously testified that Mbenenge engaged with the junior staffer on WhatsApp in the evenings and often asked her for her photos. But Sikhakhane highlighted the instances in which Mengo acted in a similar manner and accused Vetten of failing to highlight it. "She says to him, 'cute' and I'm saying this because you made a song and dance about people initiating or saying something after hours. You omitted this. Is there any particular reason? When she does it, when she tells him 'you're cute' in the evening, are you prepared to call it inappropriate or blurring the lines between this little girl and the father figure?" However, Vetten hit back. "No, I have mentioned that there is, this is in the context of a conversation that's been going on throughout the day. And I did mention that she does describe him, I think there are two occasions where she makes a comment on his appearance, where she says, cute and then it's followed into, but weren't you younger then or whatever. So there are two, there are two occasions where she does comment on his appearance."
