Heartbroken family pay tribute to 'much loved, caring' teenager killed in paddleboard tragedy

Daily Mail11 hours ago

Tributes have been paid to an 'adventurous' and 'caring' teenage boy who died following a paddleboarding tragedy at a Scots beauty spot.
Alexander McNab was reported missing after falling in the water at Loch Ore, Fife on Saturday, sparking a major search operation.
The 15-year-old's body was recovered from the water the following afternoon.
He had been paddleboarding on the loch just moments before the tragedy happened.
In an emotional tribute released through Police Scotland yesterday, his family said the 'teenager would be 'forever missed' by everyone who knew him.
They said: 'Alexander was much loved, caring, adventurous, bold, hard-working, ambitious and always looking out and caring for others.
'He is a much-loved son, brother, grandson, cousin, friend and boyfriend and a big part of his local community.
'Alexander will be forever missed by those that knew him and loved him.'
The teenager, who is understood to have lived in the nearby village of Thornton, was reported missing after he was seen falling in the water at Lochore Meadows Country Park, near Lochgelly, on Saturday.
A major search involving police, fire and coastguard teams was launched just before 5.30pm. A helicopter and divers were also deployed in the operation and police banned the use of aircraft and drones above the area.
But Police Scotland confirmed the body of a male youth was recovered from the loch around 1.20pm on Sunday and that the boy's family, who had remained at the loch on Saturday night in the hope of being reunited with their child, had been informed.
Officers said yesterday there were no 'suspicious circumstances' and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.
Detective Sergeant Duncan Thompson said: 'Our thoughts are very much with Alexander's family at this very distressing time and we have specialist officers supporting them.'
Tributes also poured in online for the youngster, with one person writing: 'Fly high Alex, such a good soul and will always be remembered as the funny, amazing guy that he was. Forever 15.'
Another said: 'Such a cheeky chappy growing up, you grew into such a lovely hard working, thoughtful young man. Sleep tight. Taken far too soon.'
One mourner described him as a 'lovely young man' who they remembered from his days at Thornton Primary School, while another said: 'We will all miss you and that gorgeous cheeky smile.'
Others said Alexander was 'such a kind, funny boy who always spoke' and had a 'heart of gold' and the 'best cheeky smile'.
Loch Ore is a popular beauty spot that hosts the annual Scottish Open Water Championships for swimmers.
It is also used as a training facility for the University of St Andrews Boat Club, with the surrounding 1,200-acre country park attracting more than a million visitors every year.
Alexander's death comes five years after 20-year-old Keivan Ulhaq lost his life after suffering cold-water shock at the same spot five years ago. He was rescued from the loch but went into sudden cardiac arrest and later died in hospital.
Following the 2020 tragedy, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service installed life-saving throw-line equipment and water safety signs at the loch.

Husband of British woman killed in Spanish jet ski horror describes how he swam out to 'hold her in my arms until she passed away' after she was struck by boat driven by a friend

The husband of the woman who was killed in a jet ski crash on the Costa del Sol has told how he swam out to cradle his dying wife in his arms after the craft they were on was hit by a speedboat driven by a friend. Debra Wright, a 47-year-old mother-of-four, was named late on Monday as the British tourist killed in Saturday evening's collision in southern Spain. Chris Wright, the 52-year-old chairman of Ashton Town FC, revealed overnight that he swam to his wife, a primary school teaching assistant, after the crash off a beach in Manilva, west of Estepona, to 'hold her in my arms until she passed away'. He described her as an 'amazing woman' and the family 'compass and glue' as one of her sons admitted he was 'sorry' for not saying he loved her every day. 'My darling wife was a 47-year-old mother of four wonderful sons, Stuart, Jack, Josh and Leon and a nanny to seven beautiful grandchildren. She was an incredible sister and doting daughter,' he said. 'She was our compass, the glue to bind the family, an amazing woman whose glow would fill any room. She was so enigmatic, inspirational and loving. Our family will never be the same.' Son Stuart Mcdonald said in his own heart wrenching tribute on social media penned in the form of a personal letter: 'MUM…I never knew how much I needed someone until now, I'm so sorry that I didn't tell you just how much I loved you every single day. You meant the world to me.' Police revealed yesterday a man described as a friend who had been piloting the speedboat that struck the jet ski Debra was riding pillion on had been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and an alcohol-related offence after failing a breath test. Ms Wright is understood to have died instantly from the collision. Writing on social media, Mr Mcdonald added: 'I'm so angry and upset, totally lost, I don't even know how to move forward without you. 'You are my Mum, my best friend, I wish I could swap places with you. If I could knowing you would be ok, I would do it in a heartbeat. 'It would be impossible to thank you for everything you have done for us, you loved me when I couldn't love myself, you've backed me every step of the way. 'I really hope I made you just the tiniest bit proud.' Leon Wright, who works for Wigan-based family recruitment agency LRL, said in a separate tribute: 'I can't believe I am writing this. MUM you were one of a kind. 'Words can't describe how much I'm missing you right now. You were the life and soul of every party, I am so happy to be called your son and I couldn't have asked for anyone better to be my Mum. 'I just want to say thank you for all the great memories you have given me, thank you for all your support you have given me, thank you for all your love you have given and thank you for everything else that you have done for me. 'I'm trying to keep strong but you did that for me I am broken, I just want you back. I LOVE YOU MUM.' A message released by Ashton Town FC as a tribute to Debra on social media In a statement, the club announced the tragedy, writing: 'It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that on behalf of Ashton Town FC we announce the tragic death of Debra Wright, wife of Chris our Chairman who was tragically killed whilst on holiday in Spain on Saturday evening. 'Our family are in mourning at this sad time and we ask for time for Chris and his family and everyone at the club to be able to start to come to terms with this tragedy. 'RIP Debra, fly high sweetheart.' The club, based in Greater Manchester, play in the North West Counties League Division One North. The incident happened around 7.25pm on Saturday at a beach called Los Toros, just west of the popular holiday resort of Estepona. A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Malaga said: 'I can confirm the dead woman is a 43-year-old British national. 'She was a passenger on the jet ski.' A well-placed police source previously said: 'The jet ski was being driven by her partner. They appear to have been hit from behind by a friend at the wheel of a speedboat. 'He failed a breath test after the collision, so he's likely to have been arrested but that is not something I can confirm at this stage.' Debra and Chris were understood to have been on holiday in the area. A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency response coordination centre, speaking before police confirmed the nationality of the victim, said: 'A woman died late on Saturday in the town of Manilva in Malaga in a collision between a jet ski and a motorboat 'The nautical accident occurred on Los Toros beach at around 19:25 hours, when several witnesses alerted the coordination centre of a collision between a jet ski and a speedboat. 'The Civil Guard went to the scene with coastguards who mobilised a boat called Gadir and emergency medical responders.' A spokesperson for the UK's Foreign Office told MailOnline: 'We are supporting the family of a British woman who died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.'

Subway workers to strike during TRNSMT music festival

Strike action by Glasgow subway workers will escalate this month when workers walk out for an additional three days – during the TRNSMT festival. Unite the union announced on Tuesday that staff will walk out on July 11, 12 and 13 in the dispute over pay and 'intolerable' working conditions, while a continuous overtime ban has been in place since June 13. It comes after three days of strike action last week which saw the subway closed. The union said that an interim offer made by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) recently was overwhelmingly rejected by the members. The dispute centres on pay, shift allowances and the SPT employees' working conditions. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: 'Unite's members will no longer accept intolerable working conditions. 'SPT has had years to resolve the problem and has failed to do so. Our members have said enough is enough. 'We will support them all the way in their fight for better jobs, pay and conditions.' Unite claims that train drivers and station staff are routinely working up to 10 hours beyond contracted hours (39 hours) a week to keep the system operating without any improvements to the shift, overtime, and weekend allowances. It said that Unite members are also repeatedly called in to work shifts at short notice, leading to significant work-life balance pressures. The TRNSMT festival takes place at Glasgow Green from July 11-13. Andrew Brown, Unite industrial officer, said: 'SPT can fix this dispute at any point but they are refusing to do so. 'It needs to make an improved offer which our members can then seriously consider. 'Strike action is now set to take place later this month which will again bring the subway to a complete stop. 'This isn't inevitable if SPT come back to the table with an improved offer but if they don't then the blame will be entirely with them for their failure to fix this dispute.' SPT has been asked for comment.

Horror as human leg 'with sock and shoe still on it' washes up on beach - as police link it to body found 70 miles away

A human leg with a 'shock and shoe' still on it has been found washed up on a British beach after it became detached from a human body 70 miles away. The tragic find was made at a popular Ayrshire beach in Scotland on the morning of June 10 at around 10.45am. Police have now linked the limb to the discovery of a man's body in the coastal village of Millisle, Northern Ireland in May. A witness reported encountering the leg bone on Prestwick Beach 'buried under some seaweed' with 'the sock and shoe till on it'. The beachgoer told The Scottish Sun: 'I was walking along the beach early on Tuesday morning when I came across a leg bone.' A police probe is now underway though is not yet known whether the remains belonged to a male or female. The death is not being treated as suspicious and it is understood the man - whose body was found close to the coastal Donaghadee Road - was not from Northern Ireland. Police Scotland said: 'Around 10.45am on Tuesday, 10 June, 2025, we received a report that human remains had been discovered on Prestwick Beach. 'Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.' The Police Service of Northern Ireland said: 'We can confirm that the body found in the Donaghadee Road area of Millisle on Wednesday, 21st May has been identified. 'The remains were determined to be male and police are engaging with the family of the deceased. The death is not being treated as suspicious.'
