Communities in some parts of South Africa woke up to snow-covered cars and rooftops, as a cold front makes its way across the country. In other areas, residents are bracing for severe thunderstorms and gusty winds.
The N3 Toll Route has urged motorists to check conditions before they embark on any long travels.
"These weather conditions may impact road safety, and could result in traffic congestion, delays, and temporary road closures should driving conditions become treacherous," warned N3TC chief operating officer, Thania Dhoogra.
"We recommend motorists keep sufficient emergency provisions in their vehicles including water, food, medication, warm clothes and blankets, cellphones, chargers, backup power banks, and basic first aid equipment," she added.

Patchy afternoon skies are expected across Gauteng
Residents in Gauteng woke up to a brisk morning on Wednesday, with early temperatures hovering around 11°C in parts of the province. Despite the chilly start, forecasters expect daytime highs to reach the lower 20s, bringing mild relief as the day progresses. The South African Weather Service forecasts partly patchy afternoon skies developing across Gauteng later in the afternoon. Isolated clouds are also expected in the Free State and North West areas. While no major weather warnings have been issued, locals can expect a relatively calm day. 'Temperatures will make it into the lower 20s for most areas,' said Joel Guy, a forecaster. 'But it will stay rather cool for Bronkhorstspruit, which will only manage a high in the teens.' While other parts of the country are seeing signs of rain, Gauteng remains dry for now. A cold front moving across the southwest coastline may not directly affect the province but could shift patterns elsewhere. Despite a dry day, some light cloud cover could move into Gauteng as the afternoon sets in. Winds are expected to remain light and variable, creating a relatively stable weather pattern. 'Parts of the country are under the influence of a cold front, but for Gauteng, we're only seeing patchy clouds and no significant precipitation,' Guy added. Heading into the evening, temperatures are expected to drop again, but not as sharply as in the early morning. Gauteng will continue to experience mild winter weather. Cold weather, warm vibes: 6 beach towns that surprise in SA winter
Summer doesn't own South Africa's coast. In fact, winter is when some towns reveal their true character: quieter, moodier, and deeply rewarding. While beach umbrellas are folded away and the water chills, the landscapes get dramatic, the food tastes better by a fire, and the air carries a clean stillness that clears your head. Here are 6 stunning beach towns that show their best side when the temperature drops… A quiet coastal hamlet wedged between Mossel Bay and George, Tergniet is best known for its calm, rock pools, and a front-row seat to passing whales. Winter keeps the air crisp and the crowds away, perfect for beachcombing and storm watching. Glentana Beach, Garden Route. Image: canva A hidden gem between Mossel Bay and George, Glentana offers wide open beaches, quiet cliff trails, and the occasional seal or dolphin. Winter gives it a soft, quiet feel, like the world took a breath. Just down the road from Jeffreys Bay but worlds apart in pace, Paradise Beach is for those who want long, empty stretches of sand and zero interruptions. Think dolphins, driftwood, and quiet evenings, the perfect digital detox. Shipwreck in Hondeklip Bay, Northern Cape. Image: wikimedia commons On the fringe of the country and the edge of the world, Hondeklip Bay is desolate in the best way. Shipwrecks, windswept plains, ancient caves, and big, clear skies. It's for those who like solitude with their sea air. Small, isolated, and full of wind-swept beauty. Cannon Rocks is known for kiteboarding in summer, but winter brings a stark, cinematic stillness. The kind of beach town where you bring a book, a blanket, and a camera. Kommetjie, Western Cape. Image: wikimedia commons A surfer's haven with a strong artistic community, Kommetjie feels raw and elemental in winter. Think kelp forests, big waves, misty walks to the Slangkop Lighthouse, and café conversations wrapped in wool. For matriculants, however, the break was anything but restful, with many attending extra classes to prepare for the upcoming trial examinations in the third term. Here are terms set out: Te pressure is mounting fast: trial exams are just weeks away, usually starting in late August or early September, serving as a crucial rehearsal for the final exams. Schools will then close for the December holidays on Wednesday, December 10, marking the end of the fourth and final term. Learners and parents are urged to gear up for the busy months ahead. With just 100 days until the start of the 2025 Matric examinations, the thousands of students expected to write are expected to buckle down and study.
