Cong welcomes SC order on SIR, accuses BJP of spreading disinformation, distorting facts

New Delhi, July 12 (UNI) In an effort to counter what it called as "disinformation and distortion" by the BJP regarding the Supreme Court order on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, the Congress today said it was satisfied with the ruling, noting that the court had directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to accept the Aadhaar card, voter card and ration card as valid proof of identity. Moreover, the party clarified that it "never pressed" for the stay of the SIR. Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, senior party leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that the court had validated the Aadhar card, voter identity card and ration card as the proof of identity which roughly covers 90 percent of the people who could be affected by the SIR condition of producing citizenship proof. He claimed that the exercise could well disenfranchise about two crore voters out of around 4.9 crore voters registered after the year 2003, as they were being asked to furnish citizenship proof. He said it was beyond the jurisdiction of the Election Commission of India to verify the citizenship of people. Stating that since 2003 when the last special revision was done, ten elections have been held, he asked, "what was the hurry to carry out another revision just before the Bihar elections, which are just a few months away". He said the previous revision in 2003 was done one year before the Parliamentary elections and about two years before the Assembly elections. The senior Congress leader maintained that this "exercise of the ECI will mainly affect the marginalised, poor, disadvantaged and the minority voters". He said that, most of the labour class during the months of July and August remains away in different parts of the country for paddy sowing. Then, he added, there is an imminent threat of floods. He said, it will be practically impossible for these sections of people to produce the proof of residence like birth certificates of their parents in such a short span of time. Asserting that the Aadhaar card is an important proof of identity, he said, 'India lives on Aadhaar, from rations to rail, but for elections, it's suddenly a fairy tale? You amended the law to embrace Aadhaar, then kicked it out from the main bazaar". UNI RBE GNK 2004

Pressure mounting? Jerome Powell may quit over $2.5 billion US Federal Reserve's Washington HQ ‘scandal'

US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is reportedly thinking about resigning. This comes after heavy criticism about a super expensive $2.5 billion renovation of the Fed's Washington headquarters. Bill Pulte, a top Trump administration official, said Friday he heard "reports" Powell might leave before his term ends in May 2026. The project's costs ballooned from $1.9 billion to $2.5 billion, with critics like Senator Tim Scott calling it a "Palace of Versailles"-style waste. Powell claims media reports about luxury features like VIP dining rooms and marble are "misleading," but planning documents from 2021 show these were originally approved. The Trump administration is turning up the heat. On Thursday, budget chief Russ Vought accused Powell of "gross mismanagement" and possibly lying to Congress about the renovation . Vought's letter states President Trump is "extremely troubled" and demands answers within a week . Separately, Trump replaced three officials on the commission overseeing the project, seen as pressure tactic. Trump himself keeps calling Powell "Too Slow" for not cutting interest rates, even saying: 'Why would you stay at a party when no one wants you there?' While Trump wants Powell gone, firing him isn't simple. Fed chairs can only be removed "for cause" like misconduct, and courts have protected their independence. Some experts think the renovation probe is just an excuse to oust Powell over policy disagreements. If Powell resigns, top replacements include Trump economic adviser Kevin Hassett or Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, according to reports on top contenders. Powell insists he'll serve his full term, but insiders say he's "fatigued" by the attacks. With the Fed's next meeting July 30–31, all eyes are on whether rates stay steady again—and if Powell stays in his job.

Hereditary principle in Congress today would have been repugnant to Ambedkar: Ramachandra Guha

'Dr. B.R. Ambedkar would have been opposed to political parties being family firms and to a single family claiming the hereditary principle,' said historian Ramachandra Guha, who delivered the first Justice Ahmadi Distinguished Lecture on 'What would Dr. Ambedkar have made of the Republic of India today', in the city on Saturday. The lecture was organised by the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, in collaboration with the Ahmadi Foundation. Quoting Ambedkar, who had said, 'Parliamentary government means negation of hereditary rule. No person can claim to be a hereditary ruler', Mr. Guha said: 'Let me be blunt, the hereditary principle in the Congress party of today would have been absolutely repugnant to Ambedkar.' Many other parties like the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Samajwadi Party, and Shiv Sena had also become family parties, he said. Mr. Guha began his lecture recalling how Kannada writer Devanur Mahadeva's speech in Manipal in 1994 inspired him to study Ambedkar. 'It is perfectly possible to pervert the Constitution without changing its form by merely changing the form of the administration and to make the administration inconsistent and opposed to the spirit of the Constitution,' Ambedkar had said while presenting the draft of the Constitution to the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1948, Mr. Guha recalled, and said, 'A quarter of a century later, in the early 1970s, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi did precisely that'. He said, 'Arguably, these ideas have been taken further by the government now in power, which has sought to rig the civil services, the police, the investigative agencies, the regulatory bodies, and the judiciary and make them subject to its political agenda.' Mr. Guha then drew attention to two warnings Ambedkar gave in his speech on November 25, 1949: personality cult and equality in politics and inequality in social and economic life. 'Bhakti in religion may be a route to the salvation of the soul. Bhakti, or hero worship, in politics is a sure road to degradation and eventual dictatorship,' Mr. Guha quoted Ambedkar.
