Suns grab Florida basketball star Walter Clayton Jr. in latest CBS Sports mock draft
Former Florida basketball guard Walter Clayton Jr. is projected to be drafted by the Phoenix Suns with the 29th overall pick in CBS Sports' latest NBA mock draft.
Clayton is coming off one of the most decorated seasons in program history. The 6-foot-2-inch guard set a single-season school record with 713 points, captured Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors and shot 38.6% from three-point range while leading Florida to a national championship.
CBS Sports' Gary Parrish praised Clayton's "unique shot-making profile," noting that the former Iona transfer averaged 22.3 points and hit 43.5 percent from beyond the arc over six NCAA Tournament games.
Phoenix could view Clayton as a potential instant-offense option off the bench, thanks to his deep range and proven clutch gene. His winning polished game and winning pedigree also make him an attractive selection during the late first-round window.
Here is everything Parrish said about Clayton and why he thinks the Suns will draft him in the 2025 NBA draft.
What CBS Sports said about Clayton
"Clayton was the star of Florida's national title run while averaging 22.3 points on 43.5% shooting from beyond the arc in those six NCAA Tournament games. There are concerns about his decision-making and approach to defense, but the Most Outstanding Player of the 2025 Final Four is such a skilled and unique shotmaker that he's worthy of a serious look this deep in the first round by a Phoenix franchise that probably needs to hit the reset button."

Brock Boeser and Nikolaj Ehlers headline the remaining NHL free agents to watch

Mitch Marner, Brad Marchand and Aaron Ekblad are off the board, leaving slim pickings in NHL free agency. This is not one of the deepest free agent classes in recent history. Still, with the salary cap going up a record $7.5 million to $95.5 million, teams are going to be spending a lot of money. Here's a look at the players to watch when the market opens: Brock Boeser Six-time 20-goal scorers do not hit free agency before age 30 very often, and Boeser had 40 goals as recently as 2023-24. He is Marner's age and he had 25 goals and 25 assists last season, so everyone from Winnipeg to Washington will be in on Boeser. The Minnesota native so far has spent his whole career with Vancouver, and the Canucks seem to be sliding into a rebuild. That gives Boeser the opportunity to get a welcome change of scenery, potentially with a contender. Nikolaj Ehlers Ehlers could be a big beneficiary of so many moves happening in late June, making him along with Boeser one of the top wingers still available. He was nearly a point-a-game producer with 63 in 69 in his 10th season with the Winnipeg Jets. The 29-year-old Dane was making $6 million annually on his last contract, and the cap going up combined with high demand and low supply could get Ehlers a nice raise. Brent Burns One of the oldest players in the league at 40, Burns is still chasing the Stanley Cup and can bring experience and more to a contender. The 6-foot-5, nearly 230-pound defenseman no longer skates top-pairing minutes, but he averaged nearly 23 a game during Carolina's run to the East final. Fellow soon-to-be former Hurricanes teammate Dmitry Orlov also will garner interest. Orlov had a rough series against Florida but is still capable and has a Stanley Cup ring from his time with the Capitals. Nate Schmidt The two-time defending champion Panthers re-signed Marchand, Ekblad and playoff MVP Sam Bennett, and that was a magic act in itself. There's not much room left for someone like Schmidt, who revitalized his career with Florida. A year since getting bought out by Winnipeg, Schmidt could cash in on once more on the verge of turning 34. Ilya Samsonov The goaltending market is remarkably thin, with fewer than a dozen unrestricted free agents around who played in the league last season. Most are backups or, at best, 1-B options, including Jake Allen and David Rittich. Samsonov is the most intriguing option. He's only 28, has starting experience and the right goalie coach and locker room could be enough to get his career back on track following consecutive sub-.900 save percentage seasons, one with Toronto and most recently with Vegas.

How many points did Hannah Stuelke score for Team USA vs Puerto Rico?

As Team USA (3-0) played their third game in as many days in group play for the 2025 FIBA Women's AmeriCup Monday night from Santiago, Chile, Iowa women's basketball star forward Hannah Stuelke had a very quiet performance in the Americans' third victory of the tournament. This time it was a relatively close 80-62 win over Puerto Rico (1-1). In the game, Stuelke scored four points on 1-for-1 shooting from the floor and 2-for-4 from the free-throw line. The senior Hawkeye forward also collected three rebounds and two assists to close out her 15:09 of playing time. Despite the low scoring impact, Stuelke finished the night with a +21 point differential and a +7 point efficiency when on the court for Team USA. The highlight of her night came early in the third quarter when TCU guard Olivia Miles delivered a pinpoint pass to a streaking Stuelke, who finished at the basket for an easy fast-break layup. Leading the team in scoring on Saturday was UCLA guard Gianna Kneepkens, who posted 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Stuelke and Team USA will play their fourth and final game of group play on Wednesday night at 1:10 p.m. CT against Mexico. The game can be streamed on Courtside 1891 through MAX. 'You're Not a Good Loser': Cooper Flagg's Mom Gets Real About Mavericks Rookie

'You're Not a Good Loser': Cooper Flagg's Mom Gets Real About Mavericks Rookie originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Mavericks' decision to select Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft didn't come as a surprise. He was already considered the consensus top pick even before he started his collegiate career, and he only further separated himself from the rest of the class in his lone season at Duke. Advertisement In 37 games with Duke in the 2024-25 season, the 18-year-old Flagg averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks. He helped lead the Blue Devils to the Final Four, putting up 21.0 points, 7.6 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.0 blocks during the NCAA Tournament. While Cooper Flagg's shooting and ball-handling leave much to be desired, he's expected to make an immediate impact on the Mavericks on both ends of the floor. However, the youngster's skills and physical tools are not the only things that make him a good fit for the Mavericks. According to his mother, Kelly Flagg, his mentality and attitude also align well with Dallas. Kelly Flagg, mother of Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg opens up about her son's personal Wachter-Imagn Images In a recent interview they did in partnership with Chime, Cooper Flagg and Kelly Flagg talked about the Mavericks' desire to win a championship immediately, which bodes well for the so-called "Maine Event" himself. As Kelly Flagg noted, her son doesn't like losing. Advertisement "Something that I'm most excited about being a Dallas Maverick would be going to an organization that, I think, is in a mode that is ready to win," Cooper Flagg stated. "Kind of looking forward to that of being a team that can be competitive and have a lot of really good pieces and really good players I can learn from." His mom then chimed in, saying, "They want to win a championship as much as you do, and you're not a good loser, and that's a win for us." It remains to be seen how much of an impact Cooper Flagg will make in his first year with the Mavericks, but his latest take and his mom's remarks should certainly raise hopes that he will be a big difference-maker for Dallas. Advertisement For what it's worth, prior to the NBA Draft, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James took note of Cooper Flagg's ability and expressed his belief that the former Duke standout "wants to be great."
