Sarawak Day 2025: Governor urges unity for brighter future
His message, commemorating Sarawak Day, highlighted the historical significance of July 22, 1963, when administrative power was transferred from British rule to Sarawak's first local government led by Chief Minister Tan Sri Stephen Kalong Ningkan.
'This event marked a pivotal step in preparing Sarawak to join Malaysia alongside Sabah, Singapore, and Malaya.
'The transfer occurred before Sarawak officially became part of the Federation on September 16, 1963,' he said.
Wan Junaidi described this as the foundation of Sarawak's identity as a sovereign state within Malaysia.
He paid tribute to pioneers like Ningkan and Datuk Seri Tawi Sli, acknowledging their roles in establishing self-governance.
He also honored former chief ministers, including the late Tun Abdul Rahman Ya'kub, Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, and Tan Sri Adenan Satem, for their contributions to Sarawak's development.
Praising current leadership, Wan Junaidi commended Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for advancing the state through the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
He noted the strategy's focus on digital economy, renewable energy, bioeconomy, and education, positioning Sarawak as a global leader in green and digital energy.
'Sarawak's economy has shown strong resilience post-pandemic and is set to lead in sustainable energy. This progress relies on collaboration between government, private sector, and the people,' he said.
Concluding his message, Wan Junaidi expressed hope that Sarawak Day celebrations would strengthen unity and inspire continued progress. - Bernama

JKT To Provide SOPs For Community Service Enforcement
KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 (Bernama) -- The Local Government Department (JKT) will issue standard operating procedures (SOPs) to local authorities (PBTs) to ensure uniform implementation of court-ordered community service sentences for individuals convicted of littering in public areas. Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the SOPs will be introduced following the passing of the Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2025 in the Dewan Rakyat today, to ensure effective implementation of the law while upholding social justice for all offenders. Nga added that capacity building is important for PBT officers, especially when dealing with young offenders. 'They must fully understand not only the provisions under the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171) but also the Child Act 2001 (Act 611), which has been taken into account in the ministry's implementation plan to ensure effective legal enforcement,' he said when winding up the debate on the Bill. The Bill was passed by a majority voice vote after being debated by eight Members of Parliament from both the government and opposition blocs. The amendment introduces a new Subsection 104A(1), which empowers the courts to order individuals convicted of breaching by-laws under Act 171 to perform up to 12 hours of community service, in addition to any fines imposed. Subsection 104A(3) provides that authorised PBT officers shall determine the time and place for carrying out the community service once a court order is issued. Meanwhile, Subsection 104A(8) states that if the offender is under the age of 18, provisions under Act 611 regarding community service orders will apply. Nga further said the ministry has outlined several strategies to enhance the effectiveness of the law, including increasing the number of authorised PBT officers for enforcement and monitoring purposes.

The oil tankers are critical to Russia's energy and oil sectors, with the British government saying they form part of the fleet responsible for carrying $24 billion worth of cargo since the start of 2024. Foreign minister David Lammy said the new sanctions would further "dismantle" Russian President Vladimir Putin's so-called "shadow fleet and drain Russia's war chest of its critical oil revenues". The government said Intershipping Services LLC is responsible for registering vessels under the Gabonese flag, enabling them to transport up to $10 billion worth of goods annually on behalf of the Russian state. Sanctions were also imposed on Litasco Middle East DMCC for its continued role in shipping large volumes of Russian oil, the government said. The Russian embassy in London did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on the latest sanctions. Moscow has previously called Western sanctions illegal and said they destabilise global energy markets. On Friday, the European Union agreed an 18th package of sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine, including measures aimed at dealing further blows to the Russian oil and energy industry.
