The NFC West was among the most competitive divisions throughout the 2024 season. The 10-7 Seattle Seahawks were the lone double-digit win team to miss the playoffs. The fellow 10-7 Los Angeles Rams captured the division title via the tiebreaker.
The NFC West projects as a competitive division again in 2024. The San Francisco 49ers appear poised to bounce back from a disappointing campaign. The Arizona Cardinals are viewed as an ascending squad.
Pro Football Focus recently ranked all eight divisions around the league. The NFC West placed third, trailing just the AFC West and NFC North.
"Seattle faces more uncertainty, with Sam Darnold stepping in at quarterback and no D.K. Metcalf in the receiving corps," Trevor Sikkema wrote about the Seahawks. "If the Cardinals take the next step — and there's reason to believe they can — the NFC West could turn into a four-team slugfest. The Rams remain one of the toughest outs in the league, and if not for the blizzard in their playoff game against the Eagles, they might have been on their way to the NFC Championship Game."
The NFC West's cumulative over/under win total for the 2025 campaign is 37, tying the AFC West and NFC North for first place in PFF's projected division rankings. The Seahawks are certainly the biggest wild-card in the division. If John Schneider's sweeping offseason changes prove fruitful, the NFC West will be as competitive as ever in 2025.

Does Colts' Day 3 draft pick have early advantage in positional battle?

There have only been two training camp practices for the Indianapolis Colts, but one Day 3 rookie looks like he may have the upper hand in a positional battle. While all eyes will be on the quarterback position--and understandably so--GM Chris Ballard highlighted a handful of other competitions taking place during training camp, one of which is for the swing tackle role off the bench. Competing for that job are Blake Freeland and fourth-round pick Jalen Travis, who appear to have the advantage at this time. During Thursday's practice, Braden Smith got a vet rest day, so starting at right tackle was Travis and not Freeland. Nothing, of course, is decided at this time, and as Joel Erickson of the Indy Star noted, perhaps the next time that one of these players needs to step in, Freeland could get the nod. However, this is at least noteworthy. Freeland would play 701 snaps as a rookie in 2023, but took his lumps. Last season, third-round pick Matt Goncalves overtook Freeland for the swing tackle role, and Travis is potentially doing the same. In his 2024 season at Iowa State, Travis was one of the best offensive tackles in college football when it came to pass protection. He allowed just one sack and 11 pressures on the year, ranking 15th in PFF's pass-blocking efficiency metric. "I think Travis has got a really good ceiling to what he's going to become in our league," Ballard said prior to training camp. "And Freeland has gotten bigger and stronger, which has been really encouraging." Colts' free agent signee stands out on Day 1 of training camp

Indianapolis Colts' free agent signee, cornerback Charvarius Ward, impressed during the team's first training camp practice. "Very impressed," Shane Steichen said of Ward, via Locked on Colts. "Great signing by Chris (Ballard) to get him on this football team. You saw how sticky he was and the plays he made. I don't know how many he made today, but he made a ton. Great to have him out there." According to the Indy Star's Joel Erickson, two of the plays that Ward made in practice were pass breakups against Alec Pierce on a deep route and then against Michael Pittman. This offseason, the Colts signed Ward to a three-year, $54 million free agent deal. He joins the Colts one year removed from an All-Pro season in 2023. That year, Ward had five interceptions, 17 pass breakups, and allowed a completion rate of just 54%, per PFF. Beyond the production, Ward brings winning experience to the Colts defense--something this team doesn't have a lot of--having played in two Super Bowls, winning one of them. He's also a great fit for Lou Anarumo's defensive system, with his ability to play on an island and match up with a variety of wide receiver skill sets. "It's go time," Ward said via Locked on Colts after practice. "It's training camp time. It isn't time to be eased into anything right now. I'm getting ready for the season. We're getting ready for a long run, hopefully to make the playoffs. We all in, 10 toes deep right now." Ward, along with Cam Bynum and Anarumo calling the plays, will play a key role in turning this Colts' secondary around this season. A year ago, the Colts ranked in the bottom third of the NFL in passer rating, completion rate, pass deflections, and yards per pass attempt allowed. Jets, The Most-Penalized Team Last Year, to Have Officials at Training Camp

The New York Jets hope seeing more black-and-white stripes in training camp will result in fewer yellow flags during the season. Coach Aaron Glenn said Friday the team will often have officials at practice through the summer after the Jets, under the previous regime of coach Robert Saleh, led the NFL in penalties the last two seasons. New York rarely used officials during training camp practices last summer. Many NFL teams hire officials for at least some of their camp practices, giving players the opportunity to get used to how plays are called in a non-game environment. "I want the officials here as much as possible, and they know that," Glenn said. "It's no secret that we were the most-penalized team in the league last year, so that's one of the things that I want to nip in the bud early — making sure that the discipline part of what we do, that we fix that now. "You cannot win games in this league with an undisciplined team, so all the penalties that we had last year, we're knocking those things out." Last season, the Jets were penalized 137 times, five more than Tennessee and Baltimore, and finished 5-12 — with Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas both fired in the middle of the season. In 2023, New York was called for 124 penalties, nine more than Cleveland and Dallas, and went 7-10. "The officials are going to be here, and we're going to knock that out all right," Glenn said. "I will tell you this: We are going to knock these penalties out. We're going to understand that undisciplined teams do not win games." Philadelphia, last year's Super Bowl champion, ranked 11th in the NFL with 103 penalties. Kansas City, the AFC champion, was fourth with 94. The Los Angeles Rams, who won the NFC West, had the fewest penalties in the league with 91. Glenn said there are two types of calls on players during games: pre-snap penalties — "the dumb penalties" — and competitive penalties, including pass interference. "The competitive penalties — listen, you go back and forth with those, right?" Glenn said. "Like [pass interference], guys are fighting. Those are competitive penalties. Holds, those are competitive. Now, false starts, jumping offside, hitting after plays, the dumb stuff, we've got to knock those out. And we control those. And those are the things I want to make sure we get rid of."
