5 years ahead of target, India gets 50% power from clean sources
NEW DELHI: Non-fossil fuel sources now make up half of India's power generation capacity of 484.8 GW (gigawatt), a milestone the country has achieved five years ahead of the target set under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) committed in the Paris climate agreement.
"In a world seeking climate solutions India is showing the way," renewable energy minister Pralhad Joshi said in a post on X on Monday, crediting the progress to PM Modi's stewardship of "Bharat's green transformation towards a sustainable future".
Modi has been pushing clean energy since taking over country's reins in 2014. In 2015, he gave the mantra of "India moving from megawatts (MW) to gigawatts (GW)" and raised clean energy target from 2,000 MW to 175 GW by 2022.
In 2021, India upped the game at CO Glasgow climate meet by announcing a target of 500 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030.
Subsequently, the government's renewable energy policy focus shifted from merely raising solar or wind energy capacity to promoting "non-fossil fuel" sources, including large hydel projects that were excluded in the earlier clean energy discourse.
This shift was driven by a commitment to energy security, climate action and ensuring sustainable economic growth.

While renewable energy is a key part, the broader strategy encompasses other initiatives such as nuclear, green hydrogen, geothermal energy and emerging technologies.
India's total installed generation capacity stands at 484.8 GW as of June. Renewable energy capacity, including large hydel projects, is pegged at 234 GW and together with 8.7 GW of nuclear capacity make up a little more than 50% of total generation capacity.
Thermal generation capacity stands at 242 GW.
Despite rapid growth in solar capacity, the grid is still heavily dependent on coal to meet the evening peak, highlighting a missed opportunity to lower power sector emissions, global think-tank IEEFA said in a report on Tuesday.
"Energy storage and demand-side management are essential to address this gap by deploying stored energy to address the evening peak and shifting part of the evening demand to daytime. These measures will not only enhance grid reliability but also reduce price volatility on the power exchanges," it said.

PM Modi To Launch Rs 12,000 Crore Projects In Bihar, Bengal Today
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Bihar and West Bengal on Friday, where he will launch a range of developmental projects worth over Rs 12,000 crore. After giving a major thrust to infrastructure development in both states, PM Modi will also address public gatherings in Motihari (Bihar) and Durgapur (West Bengal), respectively. The projects, amounting to over Rs 7,200 crore for Bihar and over Rs 5,000 crore for Bengal, aim to elevate the region's connectivity and overall infrastructural growth, while boosting employment, rural livelihoods, and digital innovation. In Motihari, PM Modi will inaugurate and lay foundation stones for projects across rail, road, IT, fisheries, and rural development sectors. He will flag off four Amrit Bharat Express trains connecting Patna, Motihari, Darbhanga, and Malda Town to major northern cities, including Delhi and Lucknow. Key railway projects in Bihar include the inauguration of automatic signalling on the Samastipur-Bachhwara line and the doubling of Darbhanga-Thalwara and Samastipur-Rambhadrapur sections worth Rs 580 crore. The Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for rail infrastructure projects, including a Vande Bharat maintenance facility at Patliputra and doubling of the Darbhanga-Narkatiaganj line, amounting to Rs 4,080 crore. In road infrastructure, PM Modi will launch the four-laning of the Ara bypass and Parariya-Mohania section of NH-319 with a combined investment of Rs 820 crore, improving access to the Delhi-Kolkata Golden Quadrilateral. To foster Bihar's digital economy, the Prime Minister will inaugurate a Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) facility in Darbhanga and an incubation centre in Patna, boosting start-ups and IT/ITES exports. Under the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana, he will launch new fisheries infrastructure, including hatcheries, aquaculture units, and fish feed mills. PM Modi will lay the foundation stone for Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd (BPCL) City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Bankura and Purulia districts of West Bengal, worth around Rs 1,950 crore, to give a boost to Oil and Gas infrastructure in the region. It will provide PNG connections to households, commercial establishments and industrial customers and provide CNG at the retail outlets. PM Modi will also dedicate to the nation the Durgapur to Kolkata section (132 Km) of Durgapur-Haldia Natural Gas Pipeline and Bokaro-Dhamra Pipeline, also known as Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga (PMUG) Project.

China spy agency accuses foreign agents of smuggling rare earth materials
China's spy agency has accused overseas intelligence agencies of stealing controlled rare earth materials, reiterating its intent to curb smuggling even as Beijing agrees to review applications to export the vital industrial resource after trade talks with the US. Without naming any country, the Chinese Ministry of State Security accused foreign entities of orchestrating the trafficking of these items, which Beijing sees as a strategic asset and has used as a bargaining chip in tariff negotiations with Washington. 'In recent years, foreign espionage and intelligence agencies and their agents have attempted to collude with and incite unlawful people in the country to steal our rare earth-related items by means of mail delivery, posing a serious danger to our national security,' the ministry said in a WeChat post Friday. China leveraged its dominance in producing these metals and rare earth magnets in the trade war with the US, which relies on Chinese supply to make a wide range of products including electric vehicles. Ford Motor Co. had to cut output at one of its plants after Beijing tightened export controls, and the curbs have deepened tensions with the European Union, which similarly depends on exports from China. The security ministry claimed to have foiled an attempt by an unnamed country to illicitly acquire rare earths for stockpiling. This involved a contractor mislabeling parcels as 'not originally made in China' and misrepresenting product content and ingredients, according to the post. The MSS also detailed other alleged smuggling tactics, such as hiding rare earth powders in ceramic tile ingredients or disguising them in water bottles labeled as 'machinery parts' for export. The ministry urged citizens to report suspicious activities related to rare earth resources. China and the US last month confirmed a deal to suspend drastic tariffs after Beijing vowed to process export licenses and the US agreed to lift its own controls on technology including some advanced AI chips. Signs of easing tensions have raised the chance of a broader deal and a meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping this year.

A married tech CEO who went viral after being caught on the kiss cam with a colleague at a Coldplay concert is being slammed by a former employee as a 'toxic' boss, with ex-staffers reportedly having second-hand embarrassment. Andy Byron is the chief executive of New York-based software firm Astronomer. He was seen in an awkward position with the company's chief human resources officer Kristin Cabot during the band's Boston show at Gillette Stadium. The pair was shown holding hands and wrapped in each other's arms on the big screen before Cabot turned her back to the camera and Byron tried to duck out of view. The viral clip sparked online debate over workplace conduct and also started chatter among Byron's former employees. A former employee who once reported directly to Byron told the New York Post that the incident was met with laughter and a sense of satisfaction among former staff. 'The text groups and chains of former employees are like… everybody's laughing their ass off and enjoying the hell out of what happened and him getting exposed,' the former colleague told The Post. Cabot had previously worked at data analytics firm Neo4j. She had responded positively to her onboarding experience, saying she was 'energized' by her conversations with Byron and the Astronomer leadership team. Now, the viral concert video has proven damaging not just for the CEO and the HR head, but also for the company's public image. Social media users criticised Astronomer's work culture, with many demanding disciplinary action and suggesting that the leadership was aware of the relationship. Adding to the speculation, another employee from Astronomer who attended the concert with the pair was also seen in the video, appearing shocked and smiling as Cabot covered her face and Byron retreated from the camera's view.
