He went through some tough times, financially, and that has been mentioned in his biography. With 17 consecutive hits, a massive fan base, and unmatched stardom, he ruled Bollywood through the late '60s and '70s. But his success didn't last forever.
During this time, there were rumours in the industry that Khanna wanted to sell off his bungalow. In Gautam Chintamani's biography Dark Star: The Loneliness of Being Rajesh Khanna, the actor's declining financial condition is detailed.
One excerpt reads, "For a better part of the early years of the first decade of the new millennium, troubled clouds had taken over almost every small pocket of sunshine in Khanna's life.
His financial state went from bad to worse and there were murmurs that he was finally on the lookout to sell Aashirwad... The news that the income tax department had slapped a notice for arrears of over a crore and a half rupees on him finally made it all too true."
At that time, screenwriter Rumi Jaffery recalled receiving a call from
. The superstar said his younger brother
was interested in buying Aashirwad. Not only did Sohail offer to pay any amount Rajesh Khanna quoted, but the Khans also promised to clear the pending income tax dues. To top it off, Salman even offered to act in a film for Khanna's production house for free. Jaffery believed it was a generous and helpful offer and took the message to Khanna.

But instead of gratitude, Jaffery was met with cold silence.
'When Khanna finally spoke, he asked him how he could even think of suggesting such a thing and accused him of stabbing him in his back. 'Kakaji said, 'I consider you a son-in-law aur tu mera ghar bikwana chahta hai… Sadak par lana chahta hai!" I had a tough time explaining that I was merely a postman delivering Sohail Khan's message,'' Jaffery recalled in the book.
Khanna refused to let go of Aashirwad, insisting it was more than just property—it was his legacy. "He even mused that he would die some day but Aashirwad would live on forever; and till such time, the world would never forget Rajesh Khanna," the book says.
He continued living in that house until his last days—alone, but proud. During his final days, Khanna lived in Ashirwad only and breathed his last there. He was living separately from his wife
and
was staying with Khanna.
'He would often be quoted saying, 'A king is a king whether on throne or in exile,' and in that context believed that Aashirwad wasn't anything less than his legacy that would outlast his lifetime.'
Even years later, when Sohail Khan ran into Khanna and introduced himself as Salim Khan's youngest son, Khanna reportedly scolded him for trying to 'buy him out' through Jaffery. The incident, as the book reveals, stayed with everyone involved—especially Rajesh Khanna.
Earlier, in an interview, Khanna's costar Sharmila Tagore had mentioned that his downfall happened because of him only. He did not handle his stardom well, she had said.

‘Raj Kapoor was reduced to dust after making Mera Naam Joker, spiralled into debt,' says Mahesh Bhatt: ‘Those were very trying times for him'

Veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt has given several iconic films to Hindi cinema. In his 51-year-long career in the Hindi film industry, the filmmaker says he has come to understand that 'success is a fluke and failure is guaranteed' in the movie business. To illustrate his point, he cited the example of Raj Kapoor's career. In an interaction on The Himanshu Mehta Show, Mahesh recalled how Raj Kapoor went broke trying to bankroll his now-iconic film Mera Naam Joker (1970), but the film bombed at the box office. However, he eventually received his due three years later with Bobby, which saw immense success at the box office. He said, 'Raj Kapoor was reduced to dust when he made Mera Naam Joker, but the same Raj Kapoor when he made Bobby, the whole nation came to make him successful because they in a way felt guilty for seeing such a great filmmaker spiral into economic debt. Those were very trying times for him, and that is the same time I joined films. I have seen him in those vulnerable times. Failure is very difficult to take in our business.' Mahesh Bhatt went on to talk about his conversation with the late legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra and how they both agreed on the importance of speaking more openly about failures with their juniors. He recalled, 'I was talking to Yash Chopra about what we need to talk to a junior about — the certainty of failure. If you want to be in this business, you have to be certain that you will fail more often than succeed. Success is a fluke, failure is guaranteed, and yet you have to keep on going.' In an old interaction with Filmy Charcha, veteran actor Raza Murad also recalled an instance after Mera Naam Joker and how distributors abandoned Raj Kapoor. He shared, 'After Mera Naam Joker, he was in tremendous debt. Things got so bad that distributors refused to buy Bobby without seeing it first. These were the same people who were once desperate to secure the rights to his movies. But after Mera Naam Joker, everything changed. He refused to show them the movie, but he agreed to show them the songs.' Prem Chopra, who was a part of Bobby, had earlier spoken to Lehren about how Raj Kapoor had to sell everything after Mera Naam Joker. 'Raj Kapoor was finished! Unka sab kuch bik gaya (He was compelled to sell everything he had). Mera Naam Joker failed miserably at the box office. Raj saab was under a tremendous financial crisis. He not only mortgaged RK Studios but also had to sell off his family properties, but he didn't give up on his love for filmmaking,' he had said. However, he had the vision to come back with Bobby starring Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia. 'He made this beautiful film (Bobby) which I was also part of. It went on to become a massive success and two new stars were born — Rishi and Dimple. However, during the making of Bobby, it didn't feel he had encountered such a massive failure and continued making it with an equal amount of passion and love,' Chopra had said.

Remember actress from Tere Naam who played role of a beggar? This is how she looks now, she works as...; Her name is...

Released in 2002, Tere Naam remains a milestone in Salman Khan's career. But tucked inside its emotional final act was a brief, gut-wrenching scene featuring a silent, beggar woman. That woman? Radhika Choudhary. She barely had screen time, but the weight of her presence left an unforgettable mark. Especially that last emotional exchange with Radhe (Salman), which many still remember. Where did she disappear after the film? While Radhika didn't chase Bollywood fame post-Tere Naam, her story quietly took a turn elsewhere. Though out of the limelight, she built her space in the South Indian film industry till 2004, and then took a 6-year break. What followed was unexpected: she moved to Los Angeles and reintroduced herself—not as an actress, but as a filmmaker. What made her an award-winning filmmaker? In 2010, she directed a short film titled Orange Blossom in LA, which explored the emotional complexity of a single mother navigating loneliness and misplaced trust. The film was shot in just four days and went on to win the Silver Ace Award at the Las Vegas Film Festival. Usha Kokate played the lead, alongside Jeff Doucette and John Paul Ouvrier. Did she ever return to mainstream cinema? Not in front of the camera. But in 2022, she took a significant step back into Hindi films as an executive producer for Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha. Quiet, but present. What is she doing now? Radhika, now known more in industry circles than among the masses, continues to work behind the scenes. She's active on Instagram, sharing slices of her current life. She's worked in multiple languages—Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada—and now, she's seen as a quiet powerhouse in the industry.
