Boomtown festival survives Winchester council licensing review

BBC News05-02-2025

A festival has survived a review that followed the death of a man at the event in 2024, and complaints from people living nearby.Winchester City Council's licensing committee decided not to change the premises licence for alcohol and music for Boomtown, in Hampshire, that will run from 10 to 15 August. The council decided to review the festival's license after Hampshire Constabulary applied to look at the running of the event, following the death of a 22-year-old man last year. The police then withdrew their complaint before the sub-committee meeting and are in ongoing talks with organisers to resolve its concerns for this year's event, the committee heard.
Councillors also heard 17 complains from local residents about the festival, which started in 2010.Objections raised ranged from lack of sleep during the event, to concerns on the impact on local red listed bird populations.A festival organiser said they chose the site for Boomtown because of the beauty of the South Downs National Park, had no intention of destroying the environment and were looking to showcase it to visitors.
Ecological concerns
One objector, Terence Jones, said that between 200 and 250 hectares of the 444-hectare site used for camping and car parks were mowed, taking away habitats from ground nesting birds. He said his bird count after the event indicated this mowing impacted the birds' numbers.Boomtown's solicitor Matthew Phipps said they was no proof birds were dying.Alison Mathews objected to the noise during the event, especially music playing until 04:00 BST on a Friday and Saturday, adding that midnight would be more acceptable.Other concerns were the impact of traffic and strobe lighting on unsuspecting drivers.Despite the objections the licence was not changed.Bands performing this year include Maribou State, Sex Pistols and Sean Paul.Boomtown is also planning to increase its capacity, with a separate application to the South Downs National Park Authority stating it wants to increase attendee numbers from 65,999 to 76,999.

Dave Grohl 'spotted' at Glastonbury as anticipation builds for Neil Young's set

Glastonbury 2025 has kicked off this week and music enthusiasts can expect to see some of their favourite musicians across the festival All eyes will be on Neil Young tonight as he headlines the Pyramid stage - and speculation is raging if the rocker will bring out any special guests. Rumours are sweeping the festival - especially after unconfirmed reports Dave Grohl was spotted on site. The Foo Fighters front man is a massive Young fan and credits the rocker as inspiring his previous band Nirvana. Grohl has said previously: "Not only is Neil a hero today because he's always walked it like he's talked it, and he has the history and integrity of a real legend, he's amazing, but, he's an incredible songwriter." ‌ Could anyone else take to the stage with Neil? Well some fans wonder whether Jon Bon Jovi could make an appearance after spotting him at Queen's Club for the tennis last week. ‌ The star has covered Young's song Rockin in the Free World before, and like Grohl, is a huge fan of the Canadian legend. Bon Jovi has form for duets - he was due to join Bruce Springsteen on stage at his BST Hyde Park show in London in 2023, but had to pull out after recovering from vocal surgery. Of course, Neil is playing BST too in two weeks - so could any potential Glastonbury duet be a warm-up to that too. While the BBC iPlayer is geared up to stream live from the main five stages, Neil Young's act was not expected to air – but that has since changed. A BBC spokesperson previously said: "On Saturday on BBC iPlayer, our Glastonbury Channel and five streams for the main stages will bring a range of live performances to audiences." They added: "At the artist's request, we won't be livestreaming Neil Young's set. Our plans, including those for our TV highlights shows and on-demand coverage, continue to be finalised right up to and during the festival." ‌ But, the star later had a change of heart as a BBC spokesperson later told the Mirror: "We are delighted to confirm that Neil Young's headline set from Glastonbury on Saturday will be broadcast live to audiences across the UK on the BBC." BBC iPlayer is due to offer over 90 hours of performances over the festival with live streams from the five main stages - Pyramid, Other, West Holts, Woodsies and The Park. This means that viewers are able to create their own list of must-see acts and plan their weekend watching schedule. Sets from the Pyramid Stage will be available to stream live in Ultra High Definition and in British Sign Language. While those who prefer to listen on the radio can tune into BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds. Saturday's line-up has a mystery act listed as 'Patchwork' performing from 6.15pm to 7.15pm on the Pyramid Stages. Speculation is rife that it could be anyone from Haim to Pulp to Chappell Roan but no one has been confirmed yet.

Olivia Rodrigo fans gobsmacked as the singer welcomes huge pop star to BST gig

Olivia Rodrigo fans were in for a special treat as she welcomed a surprise guest to the sage for her concert at British Summer Time in Hyde Park, London Olivia Rodrigo's fans were left stunned by the songstress' surprise guest at her BST gig in Hyde Park. The show came before her hugely anticipated Glastonbury Festival appearance, where she will close this year's epic event. And while her fans were left in awe with a brilliant performance of some of her biggest hits and catchy tunes, it was her special guest that got fans feeling gobsmacked. On a sunny day in London, the Drivers License singer welcomed Ed Sheeran to the stage. ‌ The 22-year-old American was wearing a black sequinned leotard for the show and brought ginger-haired Ed to the stage for a rendition of his early hit, The A Team. He had been watching Olivia wow the crowd from the side of the stage. ‌ But as he waited patiently, Olivia then surprised those at the show when she introduced him as "one of the best songwriters of all time". It's far from the first time the Azizam singer has rocked up at someone else's show. He has previously surprised fans at concerts of Limp Bizkit, Stormzy and Taylor Swift to name a few. And taking to Instagram following his latest surprise, he said: "Been a fan of Olivia's since Drivers License blew my mind back at the start of 2021. Both albums are no skips for me. I'm a proper fan." He went on: Was gonna go watch the show anyway but she hit me and asked to sing The A Team with her, which was such a buzz. That song turns 15 this year, and I remember playing it to rooms withno one in it in 2010, so to still be playing it to new fans with one of the brightest stars of the next generation is an honour and a privilege." He signed off: "Rock Glasto headline Sunday @oliviaarodrigo, UK loves you x" ‌ Olivia's Glastonbury appearance is rumoured to have come from organisers' hopes to appeal to younger audiences. It's said to be hoped that Olivia and the 1975 - fronted by Matty Healy - will appeal to a younger audience. A source told the Daily Mail prior to the announcement: "Everyone is pretty pleased with this year's line-up now." The source continued: "At one stage, with Neil Young and Rod Stewart's names already out there, some people were concerned that this year's festival was going to be defined as the year of the wrinkly rockers." They added: "Both The 1975 and Olivia Rodrigo are massive names who appeal to a much younger audience, so the hope is that Glastonbury will appeal to the youngsters this year as well as those who might want to see Neil or Rod." While The 1975 headlined Friday's show, it was Lewis Capaldi's surprise return that stole the day.
