National Seed Council To Be Launched Soon To Address Monopoly Issues

Barnama2 days ago
PASIR SALAK, July 14 (Bernama) -- The National Seed Council, which is currently in the final stages of evaluation, will be launched soon.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the body is crucial to ensure proper regulation of the seed industry in the country and prevent monopolisation by any particular company or country.
"Let the management of seeds be done in an orderly manner, and we will have a national seed board to regulate all types of plant or livestock seeds in Malaysia," he said.
The minister said this in a press conference following the Clearfield padi varieties MR CL3 and MR CL4 declaration at the FELCRA Plantation Services Sdn Bhd Padi Seed Centre in Seberang Perak today.
Also present were the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM) secretary-general Datuk Seri Isham Ishak; Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) board chairman Dr Azman Ismail; State Rural Development, Plantation, Agriculture and Food Industry committee chairman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun; and MARDI director-general Datuk Dr Mohamad Zabawi Abdul Ghani.
Mohamad also said that one of the council's key functions will be to establish a seed repository system or an official storage centre for all types of local agricultural and livestock seeds.
"The padi seed centre will serve as a repository for all types of seeds available in the country, and in the event of any issues, we can use the repository to produce seeds for the future," he added.
In June, KPKM, in a meeting, decided to designate MARDI as the lead agency for the National Seed Hub, in addition to establishing an advisory council comprising various experts to develop the coordinating body.
Malaysia currently relies almost entirely on imported seeds, including 90 per cent of vegetable and watermelon seeds valued at RM2.7 million.

Dollar strength pressures ringgit at opening after hotter-than-expected US inflation print

KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 — The ringgit opened lower against the US dollar today as the greenback strengthened on waning hopes of an interest rate cut this month by the United States. At 8 am, the ringgit dipped to 4.2480/2575 against the greenback, compared to Tuesday's close of 4.2395/2440. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US June Consumer Price Index (CPI) report released on Tuesday suggests that the inflation rate there is climbing, dashing hopes for an interest rate cut at the upcoming US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting at the end of July. 'The US CPI came in at 2.7 per cent higher year-on-year in June from 2.4 per cent in the preceding month and similarly, the core CPI rose 2.9 per cent during June after sustaining 2.8 per cent increases for three consecutive months,' he told Bernama. Mohd Afzanizam also noted that China's second quarter gross domestic product (GDP) moderated to 5.2 per cent from 5.4 per cent in the first quarter, resulting in the Chinese yuan weakening against the greenback by 0.15 per cent to 7.1825 yuan. 'In light of the latest US CPI and China's GDP, the ringgit could experience some knee jerk reaction with the US dollar-ringgit pair at around RM4.24-RM4.26 today,' he added. At the open, the ringgit was traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It improved against the Japanese yen to 2.8552/8618 from 2.8702/8734 yesterday, strengthened against the British pound to 5.6893/7021 from 5.7047/7107, and gained versus the euro to 4.9311/9421 from 4.9539/9591. The local note trended mixed against Asean currencies. The ringgit trended firmer vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar at 3.3066/3145 from 3.3095/3133, and edged up against the Thai baht to 13.0355/0783 from 13.0784/0988. But it slipped against the Indonesian rupiah to 261.1/261.8 from 260.6/261.0 and dropped against the Philippine peso at 7.49/7.51 from 7.47/7.49 from Tuesday's close. — Bernama

Sabah to host agro event again after 30 years

TAWAU: This year's National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) celebration is especially significant as it will be held in Sabah for the first time in 30 years – the last time being in 1995. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, said the State has been chosen as the host of the event, which will take place at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) in Kota Kinabalu from Aug 1 to 3, and is expected to be officiated by the Prime Minister. Advertisement 'This year marks the 50th anniversary of HPPNK with the theme 'Kudrat Kami Menjamin Pertiwi' (Our Strength Secures the Nation),' he said during a press conference after launching the Road To HPPNK @ Tawau event at Dataran Tawau Municipal Council (MPT), last Saturday. He said the two-day pre-event in Tawau is expected to attract some 20,000 visitors, generate an estimated RM100,000 in transactions, and feature seven exhibition booths, 12 Agro Madani sales stalls and 40 entrepreneur booths. Arthur said that the event serves as a platform to bring the government closer to Sabah's agro community – especially farmers, breeders, and fishermen who are crucial to ensuring national food security. Tawau was chosen as the first stop for the roadshow due to its strong potential in agriculture, fisheries and livestock sectors, as well as its strategic location, which allows easy access for visitors from Lahad Datu, Semporna and Kunak. In conjunction with the launch, Arthur presented eight mock cheques, including RM921,600 for the 2025 Fishermen's Cost of Living Allowance (ESHN) in Tawau; RM300,000 for B40 Fishermen Housing Aid in Tawau; RM50,000 for the Community Fishermen Facilities Development Grant in Kampung Tanjung Batu Laut, Tawau; RM34,000 for Fishing Equipment Assistance (Touch Point) in Tawau; and allocations under the Small and Medium Machinery Ownership Programme for PPK Kalabakan (RM26,882.80), PPK Tawau (RM9,289.70), PPK Kunak (RM39,294.80), and PPK Lahad Datu (RM9,954). Earlier, Arthur also flagged off the Road To HPPNK 2025 Motor Convoy, which will travel across several districts in Sabah including Sandakan, Nabawan, Keningau, Papar, and Kota Kinabalu before culminating at SICC. The convoy features 30 participants, including officers, staff from LKIM Sabah, youth members of Kubena (Fishermen Youth Group), and members of fishermen associations across the State. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
