TAWAU: This year's National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) celebration is especially significant as it will be held in Sabah for the first time in 30 years – the last time being in 1995. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, said the State has been chosen as the host of the event, which will take place at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) in Kota Kinabalu from Aug 1 to 3, and is expected to be officiated by the Prime Minister.
Advertisement 'This year marks the 50th anniversary of HPPNK with the theme 'Kudrat Kami Menjamin Pertiwi' (Our Strength Secures the Nation),' he said during a press conference after launching the Road To HPPNK @ Tawau event at Dataran Tawau Municipal Council (MPT), last Saturday. He said the two-day pre-event in Tawau is expected to attract some 20,000 visitors, generate an estimated RM100,000 in transactions, and feature seven exhibition booths, 12 Agro Madani sales stalls and 40 entrepreneur booths. Arthur said that the event serves as a platform to bring the government closer to Sabah's agro community – especially farmers, breeders, and fishermen who are crucial to ensuring national food security. Tawau was chosen as the first stop for the roadshow due to its strong potential in agriculture, fisheries and livestock sectors, as well as its strategic location, which allows easy access for visitors from Lahad Datu, Semporna and Kunak. In conjunction with the launch, Arthur presented eight mock cheques, including RM921,600 for the 2025 Fishermen's Cost of Living Allowance (ESHN) in Tawau; RM300,000 for B40 Fishermen Housing Aid in Tawau; RM50,000 for the Community Fishermen Facilities Development Grant in Kampung Tanjung Batu Laut, Tawau; RM34,000 for Fishing Equipment Assistance (Touch Point) in Tawau; and allocations under the Small and Medium Machinery Ownership Programme for PPK Kalabakan (RM26,882.80), PPK Tawau (RM9,289.70), PPK Kunak (RM39,294.80), and PPK Lahad Datu (RM9,954). Earlier, Arthur also flagged off the Road To HPPNK 2025 Motor Convoy, which will travel across several districts in Sabah including Sandakan, Nabawan, Keningau, Papar, and Kota Kinabalu before culminating at SICC. The convoy features 30 participants, including officers, staff from LKIM Sabah, youth members of Kubena (Fishermen Youth Group), and members of fishermen associations across the State. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Antique sellers call for end to cash deals

Published on: Thursday, July 17, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 17, 2025 By: Ahmad Apong Text Size: A British-era vintage motorcycle. BEAUFORT: Antique owners are urging the Sabah Museum Department to conduct transactions more transparently, especially by avoiding cash payments when acquiring antique items. An antique collector, who requested anonymity, told the Daily Express that most officers who had approached him to purchase antiques did so using cash. Advertisement 'They should be paying by cheque instead. Cheques are traceable and would provide assurance that the payments truly come from the Sabah Museum Department. This would create a more transparent process and prevent any element of fraud,' he said. He claimed that he had previously sold several antique items but was paid in cash at prices significantly lower than their actual value. 'There's a possibility that those items were then resold to the Sabah Museum at much higher prices,' he added. Among the antiques he still keeps are a samurai sword, rings, a motorised bicycle, an old cannon, a vintage motorcycle, old coins and a Qing Dynasty-era urn used during the Japanese occupation and British colonial rule. Because of the lack of transparency and the use of cash by certain officers, he no longer wishes to sell his items, believing they may be resold to the museum at inflated prices. He said his trust in the transaction process was lost following the previous sale, despite still having many valuable antique items in his possession. 'It's better to keep them myself for the appreciation of future generations, as these items carry deep historical value,' he concluded.

Anwar condemns Israeli airstrikes on Damascus as violation of international law

Published on: Thursday, July 17, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 17, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: A man walks with a Syrian flag, after powerful airstrikes shook Damascus on Wednesday, targeting the defence ministry, as Israel vowed to destroy Syrian government forces attacking Druze communities in southern Syria and demanded their withdrawal, in Damascus July 16, 2025. — Reuters pic Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has condemned Israel's recent airstrikes on Damascus, which violated Syria's sovereignty and resulted in the loss of innocent lives. 'These strikes constitute a clear violation of international law and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between Israel and Syria,' he said in a Facebook post today. Advertisement He said Syria has endured immense hardship over the past decade and its people deserve peace, not further violence or external interference. 'Malaysia stands in solidarity with the Syrian people and calls for an immediate end to such violations and a renewed commitment to humanitarian principles and the rule of law,' he said. Israel launched airstrikes Wednesday on Damascus, targeting Syria's Defence Ministry and areas near the presidential palace. The strikes came as Israel resumed attacks in southern Syria's Suwayda province, claiming the operations were aimed at protecting the Druze minority and warning it will continue unless Syrian forces withdraw. The Syrian army had deployed troops to the area to restore order after clashes between armed Druze and Bedouin groups killed at least 30 people. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
