Human Brains Rapidly Aged in The Pandemic, And It Wasn't Just The Virus
Fatal cases of COVID-19 look scarily like old age in the brain, and now, new research suggests that the mental, social, and financial stresses of the pandemic may have aged our brains as well.
A team led by researchers at the University of Nottingham trained an AI model to recognize healthy aging in the brain, using the data of more than 15,000 adults in the UK Biobank.
The algorithm was then used to analyze the brain ages of two groups: one that had brain scans taken before the pandemic and another that had brain scans taken both before and during the pandemic.

During the pandemic, the average human brain aged five and a half months faster than it did before 2020.
"What surprised me most was that even people who hadn't had COVID showed significant increases in brain aging rates," says neurologist Ali-Reza Mohammadi-Nejad from Nottingham, who led the study.
"It really shows how much the experience of the pandemic itself, everything from isolation to uncertainty, may have affected our brain health."
The good news is that those changes may be reversible. The study only analyzed brain scans from two time points, which means that there may have been neurological recovery in the years that followed.
"We can't yet test whether the changes we saw will reverse, but it's certainly possible, and that's an encouraging thought," says neurologist Dorothee Auer from Nottingham.
What's more, just because a person's brain may have aged at a faster rate during the pandemic, doesn't mean their cognitive function was necessarily impacted. In fact, the only individuals in the study who showed decreased cognitive performance were those who were directly infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Still, the findings suggest that a major life event like a pandemic can have a significant impact on the brain, even if you don't get sick.
In the first few years of the global pandemic, millions of humans died, and billions more dealt with a tidal wave of grief, loneliness, depression, anxiety, financial stress, and sleep disturbances.
Initial research found teenagers were particularly affected by the global crisis, with the adolescent brain showing concerning signs of accelerated aging after 2020, similar to teens experiencing violence, neglect, or family dysfunction.
The brains of young girls showed especially pronounced thinning in the cortex, which is a brain region primarily composed of gray matter. But the current study among adults found that male brains were more vulnerable to both grey and white matter changes.
Signs of accelerated aging were also particularly evident among older people and among socially or economically disadvantaged groups.
Previous studies have found that social isolation can change the structure of the brain, and poverty is also linked to accelerated brain aging.
Both could be factors leading to structural changes in the brain, but it's important to remain cautious.
Sweeping, long-term studies using brain scans can provide scientists with useful clues as to how major life events, like birth, parenthood, or menstruation, might be impacting our central nervous systems.
But without closer research, it's impossible to say why these brain regions are changing, or what impact the changes might have on cognitive function, or our behavior.
"This study reminds us that brain health is shaped not only by illness, but by our everyday environment," concludes Auer.
"The pandemic put a strain on people's lives, especially those already facing disadvantage."
The study was published in Nature Communications.

ChatGPT Says to Take a Break, Adds Mental Health Features
As ChatGPT continues to surge in popularity (the company disclosed on Monday that daily user messages exceeded three billion), OpenAI is urging users to cultivate healthier relationships with the AI chatbot. Beginning this week, ChatGPT sessions will now tell users to take breaks with reminders that interrupt lengthy sessions with the bot, the company announced in a blog post. The reminders will appear as pop-ups, and how often they will appear has not been announced. OpenAI's sample pop-up shows that the text of the pop-up will appear as "Just checking in" with the subtext "You've been chatting a while — is this a good time for a break?" Users will have to select "Keep chatting" to continue talking to ChatGPT. Now, the chatbot will ask questions about the situation instead, so users can assess the pros and cons rather than get a direct answer. "There have been instances where our 4o model fell short in recognizing signs of delusion or emotional dependency." OpenAI further stated in the post that the company is "developing tools to better detect signs of mental or emotional distress" to equip ChatGPT with the tools to respond more appropriately to mental health crises. In April, an update to the AI chatbot made it deliver overly flattering, out-of-touch responses, even to situations that required medical attention. For example, when one user told the chatbot that they stopped taking their medications and left their family because their loved ones made radio signals come from the walls, ChatGPT praised the user for "standing up" for themselves and listening to themselves "deep down, even when it's hard and even when others don't understand" instead of directing them to mental health professionals. Another user asked ChatGPT to assess his IQ, based on his spelling and grammar error-filled prompts, and the bot stated that the user came off "as unusually sharp" and said his IQ was "easily in the 130-145 range," above 98-99.7% of people. OpenAI stated in April in response that it had altered its training methods to steer ChatGPT away from flattery. How today's teens and young adults perceive and experience the impacts of world events on their mental health can inform future action by UNICEF and partners to advance solutions that work. Insights from a Gen Z study by UNICEF's Global Coalition for Youth Mental Health. Survey reveals how 14- to 25-year-olds are experiencing world events Global challenges are impacting the mental health of Generation Z in various ways. But how do young people in this age group feel world events are impacting them? UNICEF, through its Global Coalition for Youth Mental Health, had thousands of young people respond to a 15-minute questionnaire to better understand how Gen Z perceives the mental health impacts of news and world events. Questions centered around their feelings and growing concerns, their sense of resilience, determination and capacity for creativity. Respondents included 2,793 teens aged 14-17 and 2,774 adults aged 18-25 in seven countries: Japan, Mexico, Malaysia, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States and South Africa, aiming for a wide spread of age, region, gender and household income level. Tapping into feelings to design and scale youth mental health solutions that work The results of the study, shared in a report called Understanding the Mental Health Impact of Global Challenges on Gen Z, launched at the June 2025 Social Innovation Summit in San Francisco, where UNICEF called on the private sector to take note of the findings and get involved. "Understanding perception is the first step toward meaningful action," the report reads. "If we can listen more deeply — not just to the facts, but to the feelings — we can begin to design and scale solutions that are grounded in empathy and centered on human well-being." Experiment Recreates The Universe's Very First Chemical Reactions
The first chemical reactions in the wake of the Big Bang have been recreated for the first time in conditions similar to those in the baby Universe. A team of physicists Led by Florian Grussie of the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics (MPIK) in Germany has reproduced the reactions of helium hydride ion (HeH+), a molecule made from a neutral helium atom fusing with an ionized atom of hydrogen. These are the first steps that lead to the formation of molecular hydrogen (H2); the most abundant molecule in the Universe and the stuff from which stars are born. The new work, therefore, elucidates some of the earliest processes that gave rise to the Universe as we know it today. Related: The First Molecular Bond in The Universe Has Finally Been Detected in Space The birth throes of the Universe some 13.8 billion years ago produced a hot, dense soup of fundamental particles simmering at temperatures too high for atoms to form. It took about 380,000 years for nuclei and electrons to lose enough energy to congeal into the very first elements. Those elements were the lightest the periodic table has to offer; about 75 percent hydrogen, 25 percent helium, and trace amounts of lithium. Hydrogen continues to dominate the Universe's ingredient list today, as clouds of molecular gas that give birth to the stellar furnaces from which the heavier elements are born, either through fusion or violent explosions. None of that, however, could happen without HeH+ – a molecule that scientists believe played a huge role in cooling the Universe enough so that the molecular clouds could contract enough to attain the density required to collapse under their own gravity to form the seeds of baby stars. That's because HeH+ has a comparatively large separation between its positive and negative charges. In the presence of an electric field, a molecule with a large charge separation undergoes an energy shift that helps dissipate heat, which means HeH+ theoretically played a key role in paving the way for the formation of the first stars. The researchers performed their experiments at the Max Planck Institute's Cryogenic Storage Ring, a facility designed to perform experiments in a vacuum environment at temperatures just a few degrees above absolute zero, around -267 degrees Celsius (-449 Fahrenheit), mimicking the conditions of deep space. There, they carefully studied interactions between HeH+ and a hydrogen atom with one extra neutron in its nucleus, known as deuterium. An interaction between HeH+ and deuterium generates a neutral helium atom and a molecule consisting of one neutral hydrogen atom and one charged deuterium atom (HD+), with lower energy levels than the original components. Within the storage ring, the researchers fired two beams of particles; one with HeH+ molecules, the other with neutral deuterium. They changed the speed of the two beams to alter the energy at which the particles collided as a proxy for temperature to see if temperature played a role in the reaction rate. It did not. The rate at which the reaction took place remained steady, regardless of the proxy temperature – suggesting that the role HeH+ played in the early Universe did not decline as cooling unfolded, and that its role in the formation of the first generation of stars was a significant one. "Previous theories predicted a significant decrease in the reaction probability at low temperatures, but we were unable to verify this in either the experiment or new theoretical calculations by our colleagues," physicist Holger Kreckel from the MPIK explains. "The reactions of HeH+ with neutral hydrogen and deuterium therefore appear to have been far more important for chemistry in the early Universe than previously assumed."
