Guntur bags national award as Super Swachh League City under Swachh Bharat Mission
President Droupadi Murmu presented the award at the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25 ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on Thursday. Municipal Administration and Urban development (MAUD) Minister Narayana, Swachh Andhra Corporation Chairman K Pattabhiram, and Guntur Mayor Kovelamudi Ravindra received the award on behalf of the city.
Mayor Ravindra and GMC Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu congratulated Guntur's health workers, officials, elected representatives, and residents for their collective role in achieving the recognition, which they termed as a proud moment for the corporation.
To commemorate Swachh Bharat Mission's 10th anniversary, the Union government identified 23 cities with sustained high performance as Super Swachh League Cities. Guntur stood out among cities with populations between 3 and 10 lakh.
They noted that Guntur earned a 5-star rating and ODF++ (Open Defecation Free Plus Plus) status. Inspired by this recognition, the GMC will intensify efforts in source-level waste segregation, enforce the ban on single-use plastics, and expand public awareness campaigns.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan commences at Waltair Division
The Waltair Railway Division will be observing 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' from August 1-15, 2025. Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Lalit Bohra led a Prabhat Pheri with the participation of officers, staff, Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, and Swachh Sewaks at the railway station here on Friday (August 1, 2025). Mr. Lalit Bohra emphasised that the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan aims to eliminate single-use plastic, ensure effective waste disposal, and create public awareness and participation towards a cleaner environment. The DRM administered the Swachhta Pledge to officers, staff, and the public, who pledged to uphold cleanliness and participate in these activities under the Swachh Bharat Mission. ADRM (Operations) Manoj Kumar Sahoo, ADRM (Infrastructure) E. Santharam, Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer and Head of Environment-cum-Housekeeping Management Praveen Bhati, and other branch officers participated. Swachhta Pledge was also taken at Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Rayagada, Koraput, Jagdalpur, Kirandul, Araku, Simhachalam, Duvvada, Electric Loco Shed, Diesel Loco Shed, Coach Care Centre, and other units across the division. The Environment-cum-Housekeeping Management wing will conduct intensive cleanliness drives throughout the division during this period.

In a city where civic issues often take time to be addressed, a recent experience shared by a Gurugram resident has brought attention to the effectiveness of the Swachhata App. The user reported multiple garbage dumping sites in their locality and was surprised to see action being taken within the same day– an outcome that has sparked both appreciation and conversation online. Complaint filed in the morning, cleaning in progress by evening The incident came to light after a local Reddit user shared their experience on the subreddit r/Gurgaon with the title: 'Peak Gurgaon Moment, I Posted on Swachhata App and it worked.' The user said they had reported three garbage dumping spots in S Block, Sector 24, where trash and discarded furniture had been lying untouched for over a week. 'For the last week, the garbage and discarded furniture were lying in the same place with no hope for cleaning,' the user wrote. 'Yesterday, I read about this Swachhata app and, with zero hopes, I posted three complaints this morning.' To their amazement, the results were visible within hours. 'In the evening, I came to the balcony. Two of those spots were already cleaned, and the last big one, where tons of garbage had been thrown, was being cleared by a tractor trolley and workers,' they added. Calling the experience 'literally amazing,' the user said they were genuinely impressed by the quick turnaround. Reddit post: Social media users react with interest and skepticism The post sparked responses from other residents, some praising the app's effectiveness, others pointing out delays in their own cities. Others focused on awareness, with one saying, 'This app needs more visibility. How can we get more people to use it?' Gurugram's waste woes under the spotlight While such prompt action is not always the norm, concerns over sanitation in Gurugram have been raised consistently by residents over time. According to a report by India Today, earlier this month, a French national who had been living in the city for several years voiced her concerns on social media, describing the local living conditions as challenging and expressing frustration over ongoing cleanliness issues. Enhancing environmental sustainability and promoting scientific waste management practices
Guwahati: In a significant step towards enhancing environmental sustainability and promoting scientific waste management practices, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has commenced a comprehensive survey for the implementation of an Integrated Garbage Treatment System (IGTS), officials said. NFR's Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said that the IGTS would be implemented at NFR headquarters in Maligaon, near Guwahati, and Pandu Railway Colonies under the jurisdiction of the Lumding railway division. He said that the survey is being conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG), under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with NFR. As a part of this collaboration, IITG would provide technical consultancy and conduct extensive field studies to assess the feasibility design and execution strategy of the proposed system. The initiative is expected to set a benchmark in smart and sustainable waste disposal across railway establishments, Sharma said. According to the NFR CPRO, upon completion of the field survey, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) would be prepared and submitted to NFR. The DPR would outline the required infrastructure, estimated costs, treatment methodology and implementation timelines for the proposed system. The proposed integrated garbage treatment system would focus on segregation at source, scientific disposal of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, composting and recycling measures in line with Swachh Bharat Mission guidelines and national waste management protocols, the official said. This initiative is aimed at improving the overall cleanliness, hygiene and living conditions for railway employees and their families residing in these colonies. It will also help reduce the environmental footprint of railway operations and contribute towards a zero-waste colony model, Sharma added. The CPRO said that the Northeast Frontier Railway remains steadfast in its dedication to sustainable practices, infrastructural innovation and enhancing the quality of life for its employees and neighbouring communities.
