Police officer's death in Lorain, Ohio, marks latest in growing trend of ambush attacks on law enforcement
Officers Phillip Wagner and Peter Gale had just picked up pizza for lunch and were parked side by side along a dead-end road in Lorain, Ohio on Wednesday, when, according to police, a shooter was lying in wait.
Wagner, a Marine Corps veteran, was struck multiple times. The 35-year-old later died. Gale, 51, was hit in the hand. Another officer, 47-year-old Brent Payne, responded to the shooting and was critically wounded. Investigators said the shooter, 28-year-old Michael Parker, was killed during the exchange of gunfire.
Wednesday's attack is the latest in a growing trend of ambush attacks against police officers across the country this year.
Data analyzed by the CBS News Crime Unit shows at least 50 law enforcement officers have been shot in ambush attacks so far this year — on track to exceed the 2024 total of 80.
The numbers significantly spiked in 2023, when 138 officers were ambushed.
The overall number of officers shot in the line of duty in any type of attack or incident has been growing too: 342 last year. That's up 40% from 2018, according to a CBS News analysis of data collected by the Fraternal Order of Police.
Asked if there's a pattern among the attackers, Steven Fioritto, a trustee of the Ohio Fraternal Order of Police, said, "A lot of times they describe the person as a loner, but not every loner is going to do that."
The FBI has been studying the rising trend of officers shot in the line of duty. For ambush-style attacks, they're interviewing both shooters and victims.
Their findings are part of a training CBS News attended in West Virginia for local law enforcement.
"They always have to have their head on a swivel," FBI trainer Kevin Harris said. "They've always got to have that situational awareness, and the unfortunate thing about law enforcement is they're truly never off duty."Anna Schecter,

Tesla camera captures video of suspects stealing safe from Woodland Hills home
Cameras on a Tesla captured the moments that two suspects allegedly took off with a safe they stole from a home in Woodland Hills on Sunday. Los Angeles police say that the burglary was reported just after 7 p.m. in the 4800 block of Canoga Avenue. A neighbor who witnessed the crash said that the suspects sped from the area despite the tire being damaged in the collision. "He literally took off full speed, skidding with the tire track," said the neighbor. No injuries were reported in the incident and no arrested have been announced by police.

Investigation underway after man shot to death in South Bay neighborhood
A man was shot to death inside of a 7-Eleven store in Lawndale on Sunday night. The shooting happened a little after 8 p.m. at the convenience store located in the 15800 block of Prairie Drive, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Deputies arrived and found one man suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. He was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. The victim has not yet been identified. There was no information immediately available on the motive or suspects involved in the shooting. SkyCal flew over the 7-Eleven shortly after the incident was reported, where deputies could be seen surveying the area. The entrance to the store was blocked off by yellow tape. A woman has gone missing and police are concerned for her welfare
An appeal has been launched for help to track down a young woman who has gone missing. Police are looking to locate Sherine Dunn, stating there is concern for her welfare. Officers have released a description of the 22-year-old in the hopes of triggering the memory of anyone who may have seen her. They have encouraged anyone who knows of her whereabouts, or has any information to share which may be helpful to the search, to come forward and share it with police. A statement from South Wales Police reads as follows: "Sherine Dunn 22, from Swansea is missing and there is concern for her welfare. "Sherine is from the city centre but has links to Townhill, St Thomas and Bonymaen. "She is described as 5ft 2 inches tall, slim, with long hair, and has tattoos on her neck." Police ask anyone with information contacts them using the reference number 2500219822 via its live chat platform, by filling in an online form or calling 101. South Wales Police says it receives, on average, more than 8,000 missing persons reports every year. It says a missing person is defined as someone whose whereabouts cannot be established, and that they will be considered missing until they care located and their wellbeing or otherwise is established. Its website reads: "Often the missing person themselves does not consider themselves 'missing', however until they are sighted safe and well by police as a result of the concerns raised for them, they will be classed as a missing person. "While we appreciate our communities' concerns when a person goes missing, and the genuine offers of help and support, we kindly ask that the public don't conduct their own searches. "We ask this for a number of reasons; our searches are coordinated by highly-trained, well-equipped search experts who take an intelligence-led, methodical approach which everyone involved understands and follows."
