The deer ran off into the woods and appeared 'panicked,' an onlooker saidA woman was hospitalized during a race in upstate New York after a deer came 'barreling' out of the woods and collided with her.
The unnamed woman was participating in the annual Boilermaker 15K Road Race, an iconic running event that takes place during a weeklong celebration in Utica, N.Y., on July 13. The collision happened around the four-mile mark, on Master Garden Road near Valley View Golf Course, when a deer ran out of the woods, striking the woman, Syracuse.com reports.
'It's a nice downhill stretch, and the deer came out of the woods, barreling down, and hit the woman,' race director Jim Stasaitis told the outlet. 'It's just one of those freak accidents.'
It was a 'good-sized doe,' another runner, Gregory Yorton, who saw it come out of the woods, said. He shared that other runners assisted her as he yelled for a medic.
'You just don't expect deer to jump out,' Ana Peckham, who saw the collision, told the Utica Observer-Dispatch. 'That was crazy.'
'You could tell that the deer was, like, panicked, too,' she added about the animal, which ran back into the woods.
The woman was treated for a head and leg injury on site before she was transported in an ambulance to a local hospital. She's since been transferred to Syracuse's Upstate University Hospital.
Photos that appeared to be of the woman online showed her with a bruised face, black eye, and bloody ear as she lay by the side of road, while being tended to by medics.
She wasn't the only one who ended the race in the hospital, as others struggled with the heat; A total of 77 runners — out of nearly 8,500 — were treated for heat exhaustion at the finish line medical tent, with Syracuse.com reporting that six ended up being transported to the hospital for further care.

Britain hopes a crackdown on people-smugglers' social media ads will help curb Channel crossings

LONDON (AP) — Britain says people who advertise fake passports or people-smuggling services on social medial could face up to five years in prison, in the government's latest effort to deter migrants from crossing the English Channel in small boats. The government said Sunday that anyone convicted of creating online materials intended to break U.K. immigration law will face prison time and a large fine. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the aim was to stop the 'brazen tactics on social media' used by smuggling gangs. 'Selling the false promise of a safe journey to the U.K. and a life in this country — whether on or offline — simply to make money, is nothing short of immoral,' she said. Assisting illegal immigration to the U.K. is already a crime, but officials believe a new offense — part of a border security bill currently going through Parliament — will give police and prosecutors more powers to disrupt gangs that send migrants on perilous journeys across one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said the crime gangs are a threat to global security and should be treated like terror networks. Since taking office a year ago, Starmer's center-left Labour Party government has adopted powers to seize the assets of people-smugglers, beefed up U.K. border surveillance and increased law-enforcement cooperation with France and other countries to disrupt the journeys. Despite that, more than 25,000 people have reached Britain by boat so far this year, an increase of 50% on the same period in 2024. Small boat crossings have become a potent political issue, fueled by pictures of smugglers piling migrants into overcrowded, leaky inflatable boats on the French coast. Opposition parties say the government's plans aren't working — though the government argues the problems built up during 14 years when the Conservative Party was in power, The Conservatives say Starmer should not have scrapped the previous government's contentious and expensive plan to send migrants arriving by boat on a one-way trip to Rwanda. 'This is a panicked attempt to look tough after months of doing nothing,' Conservative immigration spokesman Chris Philp said. The government says it will take time to clear a backlog of applications that has left thousands of migrants stuck in temporary accommodation — often hotels — without the right to work. The hotels have become flashpoints for tension, attracting protests fueled by a mix of local concern, misinformation and anti-immigrant agitation.

Sheriff Says Someone 'Sympathetic' to Travis Decker Is Possibly Helping Him Evade Law Enforcement (Exclusive)

'Certainly, [there's the] potential that he could have someone that was just more sympathetic to him and is providing him assistance,' Chelan County Sheriff Mike Morrison tells PEOPLE. 'We put the message out that we don't think that's a wise decision, but we get that everyone's going to make their own choices.' The sheriff's office, along with search and rescue organizations, have conducted an exhaustive search for Decker in the surrounding counties. The manhunt began on June 2 after his three daughters, Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia, 5, were found asphyxiated in a remote area of the Rock Island Campground in Chelan County, Wash. Decker's pickup truck was found at the campground, but the 32-year-old murder suspect was nowhere to be found. Decker had picked up the girls on May 30 for a court-approved visit but failed to return them to their mother. The mom, Whitney Decker, reported her daughters missing to police later that night, setting off a frantic search for the four missing people. On Friday, July 25, the Chelan County Sheriff's Office said they were scaling back the search for Decker due to a 'decrease in leads and tips' into Decker's location. The office said 'there is insufficient information to suggest that he is alive, nor if he is deceased." Morrison tells PEOPLE 'there's still a potential' that Decker is alive. 'Unless he's accounted for, there's still the potential that he could be alive and still actively fleeing from us,' he says. 'Right now, you're in a pretty leisurely time for our county that you could be outdoors and probably live decently comfortable." "We get that the probability that if he is still out there, he's going to be looking to obtain supplies, food, other resources, which right now we're not getting any reports of anything like that missing," Morrison says. "The probability of him just surviving off foraging or trapping — not likely." Morrison says he can't discount the possibility that Decker may have hitchhiked out of the area or gotten picked up by someone. 'Could be a potential,' he says. 'There are roads in the area that he could have made it to. And if someone wasn't paying attention, they might've provided a ride to him not knowing what he was associated with. Or maybe they did know, and they did provide him a ride.' The most recent search for Decker was conducted in the Blewett Pass area in the Wenatchee Mountains. There were two possible sightings of Decker — one in June and another in July — but authorities have since confirmed they were not him. Authorities have also previously said Decker may have attempted to cross into Canada because he allegedly searched "how to relocate to Canada" online, according to a U.S. Marshals Service affidavit obtained by PEOPLE. 'We're frustrated because, certainly, we'd like to have closure not only for our community, but for the family,' says Morrison. 'And with the amount of resources we put in there, I was kind of hopeful that we would've gotten something. This could be a longer, drawn-out search and we're still optimistic that we will get closure." Decker is wanted on charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping.
