The Washington Commanders took pride in their defense this past season, and that unit could get even better in 2025.

In a recent interview with reporters, Commanders defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. talked about sophomore linebacker Jordan Magee, and he says that he thinks he could be a big part of the team's defense going forward.
"We really had a package in last year for Jordan, and then he got hurt and so it sort of took that package away versus 12 personnel," Whitt said. "I'm really hopefully that he can stay healthy... Being a linebacker, I believe linebackers control the huddle and control the defense. And he's learning from Bobby [Wagner] and us how to do that."
Magee missed all but eight games of the season due to some knee issues, but the team will be hoping he can bounce right back and show why they picked him in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The 24-year-old linebacker finished his final season at Temple University with an impressive 80 total tackles. Fourteen of those were for a loss, and he was also able to get to the quarterback a few times with 3.5 sacks.

Magee is learning from one of the best linebackers of this generation in Bobby Wagner, so there are not many players better who he could be getting mentored by.
Washington was eliminated by the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship, so Magee and the rest of the team's defense will be looking to help lead the team back to the playoffs to redeem themselves.

NC State Football: 2025 Wolfpack Season Preview and Prediction

NC State Football: 2025 Wolfpack Season Preview and Prediction originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With two new coordinators, NC State is bound to look different on the field in 2025. The Wolfpack want to operate fast on offense, while getting sacks and tackles for a loss in bunches on defense. It'll be interesting to see which side of the ball emerges as this team's strength, but the offense, led by quarterback CJ Bailey, seems to have the upper hand so far. It's been eight years since Roper called an offense, but he's tasked with improving a unit that was 62nd in scoring (28.5 points per game) a year ago. Advertisement Sophomore quarterback CJ Bailey will lead the attack after starting eight games in his first season of college football. He can build off last season with a core of playmakers around him, including senior tight end Justin Joly, sophomore wide receiver Noah Rogers and sophomore running back Hollywood Smothers. Joly was the Wolfpack's leading receiver with 661 yards and four touchdowns, while Smothers emerged as the top running back down the stretch, amassing 834 yards from scrimmage and eight scores. The expectation is that both will be featured pieces of Roper's up-tempo offense. The veteran defensive play-caller is looking to bring his pressure-based scheme to Raleigh, where getting after the quarterback is key to the unit's ability to wreak havoc. Advertisement Senior nose tackle Brandon Cleveland is set to anchor the defensive line, while redshirt seniors Sean Brown and Caden Fordham will lead the team's linebacker corps. Temple transfer linebacker Tra Thomas, who will likely spend most of his time at edge, impressed this past spring. The Wolfpack will boast a largely new secondary as the transfer portal took most of the starters. Former FCS Villanova transfer Devon Marshall emerged as a consistent cornerback for the Pack a year ago and is set to start. Watch for young defensive backs like redshirt freshmen Ronnie Royal III and Jaren Sensabaugh to make waves this fall. NC State LB Sean Brown | Bob Donnan-Imagn Images Previewing NC State's Specialists for 2025 Punter Caden Noonkester, placekicker Kanoah Vinesett and long-snapper Aiden Arias are set for another season with the Pack. Noonkester averaged 43.6 yards per boot, dropping 18 inside the 20-yard line and launching 14 punts of 50-plus yards. Vinesett is entering his second season as NC State's starting placekicker. He was 18-of-24 on field-goal attempts with a long of 52 a year ago. He was a perfect 34-for-34 on PATs and was 14-for-16 on field-goal attempts under 40 yards. NFC East Hopes One Stat Dooms Commanders As 'Dumpster Fire'

NFC East Hopes One Stat Dooms Commanders As 'Dumpster Fire' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Few teams in NFL history enjoyed the kind of turnaround that the Washington Commanders engineered for themselves in 2024. Advertisement After a four-win season in 2023, a new coach and quarterback jumpstarted the team capped by their first trip to the conference title game in over three decades. As good as they were, though, the Commanders' brief run with success could be so their foes in the NFC East might wish. Jimmy Kempski, a Philadelphia Eagles beat reporter for PhillyVoice, is publishing his annual "Why (Team X) will be a dumpster fire this season" series as he examines his way through each team in the NFC East. The top identified problem for the Commanders? It's that most few teams that enjoyed that sort of one-year jump struggled mightily to maintain that success the following season. Advertisement "Only the 1996-1998 Jets had an improvement once again after their initial breakout season," Kempski said. "On average, the above teams experienced a decrease of 3.9 wins the following season.'' "And let's be real about those 12 regular-season wins last season, Commanders fans,'' he wrote. "A lot of those were lucky. I mean, we can all admit that, right?" That's a hard opinion. NFC East fans can engage in a barroom brawl argument all offseason about about whether Washington's run was lucky last season. But they can't deny that of the 14 teams that previously enjoyed an eight-win swing from one year to the next, 13 of them saw an average drop in win total of over three games in the ensuing year. Advertisement Now, in fairness to what counts as "good,'' even that dip would still leave Washington with nine wins and a possible playoff berth. But it would undoubtedly make things more difficult for the franchise this season. In the end, the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles and the hopeful Dallas Cowboys sure hope Washington becomes a victim of history.
