Dubai inmates competed from behind bars to secure 5th place in virtual chess championship
A team of inmates from Dubai Police's Correctional and Penal Institutions has earned fifth place in the first-ever Asian Inmate Chess Championship, a virtual tournament overseen by the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
The milestone highlights the transformative power of chess as a tool for rehabilitation and reintegration.
The tournament brought together 23 teams from eight countries across Asia. Representing the UAE, Dubai's eight-member team was selected through an intense internal qualifier involving 40 inmates. The selection and training were carried out in collaboration with the Dubai Chess and Culture Club, which provided mentorship and strategic guidance throughout the process.
'The team placed fifth overall, demonstrating a high level of preparation and strategic competence during the final rounds. The outcome reflects the consistency and focus shown by the participants throughout the competition,'

'Chess is a tool for rehabilitation, helping inmates develop critical thinking and a sense of purpose.'
This initiative is part of a broader correctional strategy launched under the directives of Major General Marwan Abdul Karim Julfar and actively supported by Brigadier Salah BuOsaibah.
It is aimed at equipping inmates with the cognitive, emotional, and behavioural skills required for a productive reintegration into society.
Next move: Defending world champions
Looking ahead, the team is preparing to compete in the 5th Inmate Chess World Cup, scheduled for October. Dubai Police will enter the global stage not only as participants but as defending champions.
Earlier this year, the Dubai inmates' team secured a landmark victory by beating 115 teams from 51 countries at the Inmate Chess World Cup, organised by the Cook County Office in Chicago.
Lt. Col. Al Obaidli confirmed preparations are already underway:
'The department is currently preparing to participate in the fifth Inmate Chess World Cup… where Dubai Police will return as the previous edition's titleholder.'

Agra: UP CM Yogi Adityanath has warned that individuals operating drones without official permission or spreading rumours and misinformation about them to create panic will be prosecuted under the Gangster Act, and in serious cases, the National Security Act (NSA) will also be invoked. The 'misinformation' about drones has triggered community-led patrolling, physical assaults, and mob action against mentally disabled persons and outsiders mistaken for gang members. Sensing public disorder, UP police have already launched night patrols from 11pm to 3am in some areas, along with awareness campaigns with village heads, and created a "drone register" to identify legitimate operators. Police further clarified that drone use at night has been barred completely to prevent chaos and panic. There have also been several arrests of "drone rumour suspects" in Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Ghaziabad and Bareilly, along with some of those involved in "mob attacks". In the latest such case in Muzaffarnagar, three persons were held for allegedly using pigeons fitted with LED lights -- in the night sky -- to mimic drone activity and purportedly spread fear. Mumbai crime branch arrests couple for forging documents for illegal Bangladeshi immigrants
Mumbai: In a drive against illegal Bangladeshi migrants, the city Crime Branch arrested a couple for allegedly running an elaborate racket of forging Indian identity documents for illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. The arrested accused were identified as Purushottam Prasad Sharma (57) and his wife Manju Purushottam Sharma alias Manju alias Altaf Shaikh (42), residents of Malad (West). According to officials, the duo was involved in fabricating Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, voter IDs, and bank documents to facilitate the illegal stay of Bangladeshi nationals in India. Acting on a tip-off, a team from unit 11 of the crime branch raided the couple's residence at Sai Savli Co-operative Housing Society, New MHADA Colony, on Friday and recovered a huge pile of documents. During the search, police recovered a laptop, four mobile phones with SIM cards, forged identity documents including two Aadhaar cards in different names, two PAN cards, and a voter ID linked to Manju Sharma. Officials also seized bank passbooks, cheque books, and a red-coloured pen drive believed to contain data related to the racket's operations. Police suspect that the accused were part of a larger network assisting Bangladeshi nationals in fabricating Indian citizenship documents to settle illegally in the country. The accused also had contacts with agents operating in Bangladesh, as evidenced by transaction records and call data retrieved from their devices. "The modus operandi involved creating forged Aadhaar and PAN cards using fake credentials and opening bank accounts in Indian financial institutions. This documentation was then used by illegal immigrants to claim Indian citizenship and avail public services," a Crime Branch official said. Both accused were arrested on Saturday under Sections 318 (4), 336 (2), 336 (3), 338, 340 (2), 61 (2), 249, 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with charges under the Passport Act, Foreigners Act, and Foreigners Order. The duo was produced before the court on Saturday and remanded to police custody. Police are now probing the possible involvement of other agents and middlemen in the racket and suspect a wider interstate and cross-border network facilitating illegal immigration through document forgery.
