'Pretty Little Baby' singer Connie Francis passes away

Express Tribune17-07-2025
Legendary singer Connie Francis has passed away at the age of 87. Her close friend and label president, Ron Roberts, confirmed the news on Facebook late Thursday, July 16, writing: 'It is with a heavy heart and extreme sadness that I inform you of the passing of my dear friend Connie Francis last night.' The announcement came just weeks after Francis had shared that she was hospitalized for 'extreme pain' and undergoing tests.
Francis, born Concetta Franconero in Newark, New Jersey, rose to fame in the late 1950s with hits like 'Who's Sorry Now?,' 'My Heart Has A Mind Of Its Own,' and 'Where the Boys Are.' In 1960, she became the first solo female artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 with 'Everybody's Somebody's Fool.' Her global popularity was boosted by her multilingual recordings and appearances on iconic platforms like American Bandstand and The Ed Sullivan Show.
Though her music career was groundbreaking, Francis also endured a series of personal hardships. She survived a rape in 1974, lost her voice temporarily due to nasal surgery, and tragically lost her brother to a mafia-related murder in 1981. Mental health struggles followed, leading to multiple involuntary psychiatric hospitalizations, which she later revealed were misdiagnosed. Despite these setbacks, she staged comebacks, advocated for victims' rights alongside Ronald Reagan's administration, and raised awareness for trauma recovery through partnerships with Mental Health America.
Francis was married four times and adopted a son, Joseph Garzilli Jr. Reflecting on her life in 2017, she said she hoped to be remembered 'not so much for the heights I have reached, but for the depths from which I have come.' She is survived by her son.

Atlanta rapper Ca$h Out sentenced to life for trafficking, rape, and rico conviction

Atlanta rapper Ca$h Out, whose real name is John-Michael Gibson, has been sentenced to life in prison, plus 70 additional years, after being convicted on multiple charges, including rape and racketeering. According to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office, Gibson was found guilty on July 18, 2025, of leading a prostitution ring and violating Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. The charges against Gibson also included aggravated sodomy, two counts of trafficking persons for sexual servitude, pimping, pandering, battery, possession of a firearm during a felony, and maintaining a place of prostitution. He was acquitted on a single count of felony aggravated assault, his defense attorney Careton R. Matthews confirmed. The rapper, known for his early 2010s hits 'Cashin' Out' and 'She Twerkin,' had been on trial since June 2 in Fulton County Superior Court before Judge Melynee Leftridge. During the proceedings, Matthews argued that the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence and claimed the testimony of several accusers was inconsistent and unreliable. Gibson's co-defendants included his mother, Linda Smith, and associate Tyrone Taylor, both of whom were also convicted. Smith received a 30-year sentence, while Taylor was sentenced to life plus 70 years. Prosecutors told the jury that the group operated a criminal enterprise using deception and coercion to recruit and exploit women. Judge Leftridge, before handing down the sentences, stated that the evidence showed 'the very worst of human behavior toward other human beings,' according to WXIA-TV. Matthews said his client continues to maintain his innocence and may pursue an appeal or request a new trial. Gibson rose to fame in 2011 after signing with Epic Records and reaching No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 with 'Cashin' Out.'

Drake comments after Alex Warren's ‘Ordinary' holds off Hot 100 top spot for ‘What Did I Miss?'

Drake has responded after Alex Warren's song 'Ordinary' prevented his latest single 'What Did I Miss?' from debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Warren's track has held the top spot for six weeks, while Drake's single entered the chart at No. 2 for the week dated July 19 2025. 'Suppressor on the 1 spot,' Drake posted on his Instagram Story, sharing the Hot 100 graphic. 'I'm taking that soon don't worry one song or another. Rule changes and all.' Alex Warren, whose song held the top spot, posted a video of himself dancing to 'NOKIA' in response to Drake's post. Despite missing out on the top position, 'What Did I Miss?' marks Drake's record-extending 81st Hot 100 top 10 hit. The track achieved the No. 1 position on Streaming Songs, giving Drake his 21st leader on that chart, and also led the Digital Song Sales, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts. Drake released 'What Did I Miss?' days before his three-day headlining performances at Wireless Festival 2025 in London. His sets included an R&B-themed night with PartyNextDoor, Ms. Lauryn Hill and Giveon, a UK rap-themed night with Skepta, Headie One and Central Cee, and an Afrobeats-and-dancehall night featuring Vybz Kartel, Burna Boy and Spice. During the final night, Drake teased a new single with collaborator Cench, scheduled for release on July 18.
