Minor League Baseball names Hartford Yard Goats Organization of the Year
They have high hopes to bring an Eastern League Championship to Hartford after reaching the playoffs for the first time in 2024. Now, in their 10th season at Dunkin' Park, they say they have unfinished business heading into the new year.
'Winning something here for the players and for the city here, and everybody comes out and provides support for us, is important,' Yard Goats Manager Bobby Meachern said. 'Hopefully we can get that done this season and win a championship here in Hartford.'
The Yard Goats start their 2025 season this Friday with a game against the Somerset Patriots.

Watch: Giant baseball with 6,750 signatures breaks world record
July 31 (UPI) -- A giant baseball taken on a tour of Minor League Baseball stadiums broke a Guinness World Record by accumulating 6,750 signatures. The 8-foot diameter replica baseball started its journey June 24 at Victory Field, home of the Indianapolis Indians, and visited 15 ballparks before arriving at its final stop at the MLB Flagship Store in New York on Tuesday. A Guinness World Records adjudicator examined the ball and determined there were 6,750 verified signatures on its surface, earning the title for the most signatures on a single item of sports memorabilia. The previous record of 2,146 signatures was set by the Cambridge United Football Club last year, when it gathered fans to sign a giant inflatable jersey.

Pirates' Konnor Griffin named MLB Pipeline's No. 1 prospect
Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Konnor Griffin has been named MLB Pipeline's new No. 1 prospect. Griffin, 19, is the team's first-round pick from the 2024 draft and has shot up several prospect rankings due to his stellar play in Minor League Baseball this season. Griffin earned the honor from MLB Pipeline after the previous No. 1 prospect, Roman Anthony, officially lost his prospect status after his 46th day of active MLB service time, which is one day more than the maximum for future rookie eligibility, according to MLB's rulebook. The right-handed shortstop has slashed a .331 average with 13 home runs, 55 RBI and 44 stolen bases so far in 2025 play. Griffin and fellow Pirates prospect, outfielder Esmerlyn Valdez, were recently named to the National League roster for this season's All-Star Futures Game at Truist Park. Coming into last year's draft, Griffin was rated by both MLB Pipeline and Baseball America as the No. 9 prospect. Scouts say Griffin has the potential to be a five-tool player, and with at least plus speed, Griffin has 30-30 upside at the major league level.

Long Beach moves forward with plans to bring minor league baseball to Blair Field
Long Beach City Council members took another steps towards bringing minor league baseball back to the city on Tuesday, unanimously voting to move forward with a plan that would allow another team to call Blair Field home. Upon approving the plan, city leaders will now work with Cal State Long Beach administration and officials for the new team, which is temporarily being referred to as the Long Beach Baseball Club. The team will play their home games at Blair Field at Recreation Park, home of CSULB's baseball team, during the spring season. "Overall, the general framework for this proposed partnership emphasizes the shared goals of revitalizing Blair Field, enhancing community access, and generating economic benefits for the surrounding neighborhoods," said the recommendation drafted prior to Tuesday's vote. Among those improvements made to the field include locker room renovations, outfield enhancements and making sure that the facility was preserved long-term with constant maintenance. City leaders will also look to improve the fan experience through "branding, sponsorships, and modernized amenities." Blair Field opened in 1956 and last underwent renovation in 2009, when the stadium's lighting was modernized and a new electronic scoreboard was installed, according to the City of Long Beach's website. It would be the first minor league team to call Long Beach home since 2009 when their last professional team, the Long Beach Armada, suspended operations. Prior to that, the Long Beach Breakers also played for the city from 2001 to 2003. Once finalized, the Long Beach Baseball Club would be the Pioneer Baseball League's 13th team. The PBL is one of four MLB Partner Leagues across the United States, operating entirely on the West Coast. CBS News Los Angeles has reached out to city officials for a statement on the decision but has not yet heard back.
