1950: A Chicago Transit Authority Green Hornet streetcar slammed into a gas truck on State Street near 62nd Street in what remains the worst traffic accident in Chicago history and the worst streetcar accident in the United States. The streetcar's doors did not have emergency pulls to open them, which are now required on all CTA vehicles, so 33 passengers died trapped inside. The gas truck driver also died. The streetcar's motorman was blamed for failing to slow down to negotiate a switch.
5 things you might not know about Chicago native Ted Kaczynski — the 'Unabomber'1978: 'Unabomber' Ted Kaczynski left his first known bomb in a parking lot at the University of Illinois Chicago.
A passerby picked it up and returned it to the person Kaczynski listed on the return address as the sender. That person, a Northwestern University professor, was suspicious about the package and turned it over to security there. A public safety officer at Northwestern suffered minor injuries when he opened the package and it exploded.
1979: At the start of Memorial Day weekend, 271 people aboard American Airlines Flight 191 died after the DC-10 aircraft they boarded crashed just 31 seconds after takeoff from O'Hare International Airport. Two more people on the ground also died in the crash that impacted an open field about 4,600 feet northwest of the departure end of the runway.
It's still the deadliest passenger airline accident on U.S. soil.
1981: 'Spider Dan' Goodwin scaled the Sears Tower, which was then the world's tallest building.
At least 200 people showed up to watch the 25-year-old Goodwin, clad in a blue-and-orange suit, scale the west side of the building using suction cups and a 'home-welded claw,' the Tribune reported.
'Spider Dan' wowed Chicagoans with his scaling of skyscrapersGoodwin finished a little before 10:30 a.m. and was promptly taken into police custody. He and partner in crime James Hackett were charged with disorderly conduct and bonded out the next day, with Goodwin walking out of the downtown jail still in his superhero suit. Hours later, Goodwin was holding court and dining on trout at the Ambassador East Hotel in the Pump Room's famed Booth One.
Two weeks later, Goodwin and Hackett appeared in court. Goodwin pleaded guilty and was fined $35. Hackett had his charge dismissed.
Goodwin went on to scale the John Hancock Center in November 1981.
1982: Fergie Jenkins became the seventh MLB pitcher to strike out 3,000 batters in the Chicago Cubs' 2-1 loss at San Diego. Jenkins reached the milestone by striking out Garry Templeton in the third inning.

Body of 26-year-old LA County woman missing since Memorial Day located in Sequoia National Park
The body of a Los Angeles County woman missing since Memorial Day was found at a national park in Northern California last week, according to authorities. Jomarie Calasanz, 26, of La Puente, was reported missing on May 25 when she was "swept into the river while recreating with friends and family in Sequoia National Park," according to a social media post from Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Despite weeks of searching, officials said that their efforts were limited due to unsafe river conditions and technical terrain. Crews still continued to proactively search the area in and around the Kaweah River by utilizing drones, dive teams, swift water teams, K9s and ground searching, officials said. At one point, they searched a "point of high interest" less than a mile from where Calasanz was last seen, but dangerous high-water flows prevented crews from finding her. Calasanz's body was found on July 24 and she was identified on Monday. "Water flow calculations were continually monitored, and it was determined July 24 would be the first and best opportunity to safely locate Jomarie," authorities said. "I am extremely grateful for the coordination, support, and determination by the Tulare County Sheriff's Office and our NPS team, in the continued search for Jomarie," said a statement from Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks Superintendent Clay Jordan said. "I hope this brings some level of closure to the family."

'I think she should have a life sentence at least.' The Trump administration's Justice Department recently granted Maxwell limited immunity during a series of recent interviews, allowing her to answer questions without her responses being held against her. Maxwell has made clear she wants her sentence thrown out or reduced; President Trump wished her 'well' in an interview and said a pardon is something he's 'allowed to do.' 'I mean, think of all these unspeakable crimes, and as you noted earlier, probably 1,000 victims,' Johnson continued. 'I mean, you know, this, this is, it's, it's hard to put into words how evil this was, and that she orchestrated it and was a big part of it, at least under the criminal sanction, I think is an unforgivable thing. So again, not my decision, but I have great pause about that, as any reasonable person would.' In 2021 Maxwell was convicted on five of six charges stemming from her years working with Epstein. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison in June 2022. Welker also asked Johnson if Maxwell 'can be trusted' following two days of interviews with Deputy Attorney General Tom Blanche. 'I hope so. I hope that she would want to come clean. We certainly are interested in knowing everything that she knows,' he answered. 'And as you'll note, in our House Republican majority, we're working towards that. Chairman Comer and our oversight committee has already issued their own subpoena. They, they want to bring in Ghislaine Maxwell as well. I hope she's telling the truth. She is convicted. She is serving a 20-year sentence for child sex trafficking, and so her character is in some question. But if she wants to come clean now, that would be a great service to the country, and we'd like to know every single bit of information that she has. I certainly hope she's telling the truth.' Blanche has yet to make a public statement about his conversations with Maxwell. That the department's second in command is interviewing a witness personally is 'highly unusual,' former prosecutors told NBC News. Attorney Jack Scarola, who represented approximately 20 of Epstein's victims, was denied a request to attend Maxwell's interview. Catherine Christian, a former Manhattan assistant district attorney and an NBC News legal analyst, also told the news outlet the interviews could be part of a larger plan to distract from Donald Trump's ties to Maxwell and Epstein. The president is fending off rising inquiries into the exact nature of those relationships, including calls for clarification from within his MAGA base.
