Jumio Survey Reveals Crumbling Consumer Trust In Digital Life Amid Surge In AI-powered Fraud And Deepfakes

Barnama23-05-2025
SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 23 (Bernama) -- Jumio, the leader in AI-powered identity intelligence anchored in biometric authentication, automation and data-driven insights, today released the 2025 Jumio Online Identity Study, the fourth installment of its annual global consumer research. This year's results paint a stark picture: trust in digital life is crumbling under the weight of deepfakes, misinformation and cybercrime.
The study examined the views of more than 8,000 adult consumers, split evenly across the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Mexico. Sixty-nine percent of respondents say AI-powered fraud now poses a greater threat to personal security than traditional forms of identity theft, and confidence in online authenticity continues to erode amid growing fears of manipulated content and AI-driven deception.

Ringgit rebounds on softer US stance towards China

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit rebounded this morning, opening higher against the US dollar amid reports of a softer stance by United States (US) President Donald Trump towards China. At 8 am, the ringgit rose to 4.2335/2550 against the greenback, compared to Wednesday's close of 4.2400/2490. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US Dollar Index (DXY) fell 0.23 per cent to 98.392 points as Trump reportedly adopted a less hawkish stance towards China, despite the ballooning trade deficit with the world's second-largest economy. 'At the same time, news is circulating on the possible termination of Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell by President Trump, which also seems to fuel positive sentiment in the market,' he told Bernama. As such, Mohd Afzanizam said the ringgit could gain some traction today after weakening slightly by 0.07 per cent to 4.2445 yesterday. At the opening, the ringgit was traded lower against a basket of major currencies, except for the British pound. It strengthened against the British pound to 5.6767/7055 from 5.6786/6907 at yesterday's close. However, it slipped against the Japanese yen to 2.8603/8750 from 2.8508/8569, and fell versus the euro to 4.9257/9507 from 4.9248/9352 previously. The local note was mostly higher against most ASEAN currencies. It rose vis-a-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.2987/3159 from 3.2999/3071, appreciated against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.9/261.3 from 260.3/260.9 and edged up versus the Philippine peso to 7.41/7.46 from 7.43/7.45. But it fell against the Thai baht to 13.0322/1076 from 13.0301/0630 at Wednesday's close. - Bernama

Smugglers flee after RM2.3m cigarette bust in Kelantan police chase

KOTA BHARU, July 17 — Marine police foiled an attempt to smuggle 114 crates of white cigarettes in a raid at Kampung Alor Mengkuang, Pasir Mas on Tuesday. Region Three Marine Police Commander ACP Zulafendy Hassan said officers spotted a suspicious three-tonne lorry around 4 am near Chabang Empat, heading to Kampung Ana, Tumpat. The driver ignored orders to stop and tried to escape. He said two cars believed to be used by 'tontos' tried to block the police and almost hit an officer on a motorcycle. Police fired at the tyres of the lorry and the tonto vehicles, but the suspects kept going. The chase lasted 30 minutes before the lorry crashed into a parking barrier in Pasir Mas, and the driver ran off on foot. Inside the lorry, police found 114 cartons of Zon King white cigarettes, totalling about 1.14 million sticks, believed to be smuggled from a nearby country. Zulafendy said the seizure was worth about RM2.3 million, including tax, and the case was being investigated under the Customs Act and the Penal Code. He also urged the public to report border crimes by calling 09-5137726 or emailing [email protected]. — Bernama

DPM Zahid To Visit New Zealand's National Crisis Management Centre Today

GENERAL WELLINGTON, July 17 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is scheduled to visit New Zealand's National Crisis Management Centre today to observe the country's disaster and crisis response framework. Located in the Beehive Bunker beneath New Zealand's Parliament, the visit forms part of the fourth day of his official working trip to the country, in line with his responsibilities as Chairman of Malaysia's Central Disaster Management Committee (JPBP). The visit aims to gain insights into New Zealand's emergency response systems, inter-agency coordination, and post-disaster recovery strategies – areas for which the country is widely recognised for its preparedness and transparency. Ahmad Zahid is also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with New Zealand's Minister for Agriculture, Trade and Investment, Todd McClay, to explore potential cooperation in food security and strategic supply chains. Later in the day, he will attend a community engagement session with Malaysians in Wellington, where over 250 citizens residing in the country are expected to participate. The Deputy Prime Minister is scheduled to conclude his working visit and return to Kuala Lumpur on Friday (July 18). Since arriving in Auckland on July 14, he has met with local industry leaders and business groups, including the ASEAN–New Zealand Business Council (ANZBC). On the second day, he travelled to Rotorua for the Māori Business Roundtable, aimed at strengthening collaboration in indigenous and social development initiatives. On the third day, he was in the capital for meetings with senior New Zealand government officials at the Beehive, as part of ongoing efforts to further enhance Malaysia–New Zealand bilateral relations.
