5 top new movies to stream this week on Prime Video, HBO Max, Hulu and more (Aug. 5-11)
However, the biggest newcomer this week can be found on premium video-on-demand platforms. Jurassic World Rebirth' is set to make the tyrannosaurus-sized leap from cinemas to streaming. And viewers looking for more blockbuster action will also want to check out 'The Pickup' on Prime Video. Plus, the summer of Pedro Pascal continues over on HBO Max.
These are the top new movies you can stream this week, and if you're in the mood for a binge-watch, check out our guide to the top new TV shows this week.
'Jurassic World Rebirth' is the best 'Jurassic' movie since the original 'Jurassic World' back in 2015.
OK, so when the competition is 'Fallen Kingdom' and 'Dominion,' which are, in my opinion, two of the worst tentpole blockbusters of the last decade, that's faint praise. But still, 'Rebith' represents a step in the right direction for a franchise that has so often struggled to recapture the enduring magic of the original 'Jurassic Park.' Even though I admit, it's fun but flawed.
'Rebirth' sees Scarlett Johansson play Zora Bennett, an ex-military special operative, who leads a team into one of the world's most dangerous places: A tropical island that served as the research facility for the original Jurassic Park.
The mission requires them to secure three DNA samples from specific dinosaurs, but of course, the plan goes awry. Also starring Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey, it packs plenty of dino-themed fun, but the series' insistence on creating new mutated creatures does feel ill-judged.

Prime Video is following up its summer streaming hit, 'Heads of State,' with another high-stakes action comedy in the form of 'The Pickup.'
This one looks perfect for viewers craving a big-budget romp, but without having to shell out for a cinema ticket and overpriced theatre snacks. Its cast list is also nothing to sneeze at, with Eddie Murphy, Pete Davidson, Keke Palmer and Eva Longoria headlining. I doubt it'll be a critical darling, but its future as a Prime Video No. 1 looks pretty secure.
'The Pickup' centers on two armored truck drivers (Murphy and Davidson) who face the shift from hell when criminals, led by a savvy mastermind (Palmer), ambush them and attempt to steal their vehicle's cargo.
What follows is an action-packed shift as these mismatched co-workers are roped into a dangerous heist with highly personal stakes. The setup seems predictable, but the trailer promises plenty of explosions and lots of slapstick comedy gags.
Watch on Prime Video from August 6
'The Monkey' is one of my biggest disappointments of 2025. It's not because it's bad, but rather considering the pedigree of director Oz Perkins (the man behind last year's 'Longlegs' and the overlooked 'The Blackcoat's Daughter'), I had high hopes for this horror, and ultimately, my expectations weren't quite met.
Still, there's a lot of darkly comedic fun to be found in this blood-drenched movie, and now that it's arriving on Hulu, the barrier to entry has dropped considerably. 'The Monkey' offers a series of extremely gory kills, stitched together by an off-kilter story that's a little too goofy.
The movie opens with twin brothers finding a strange and very creepy wind-up monkey doll. This odd toy is actually cursed and causes a string of horrific deaths. Fast forward 25 years, and the brothers (both played by Theo James) have become estranged. But when the monkey doll resurfaces, they're forced to reunite to end the curse for good.
Watch on Hulu from August 7
Comedy-slashers are back in vogue with 'Heart Eyes' blending horror and humor back in February, and 'Clown in a Cornfield' bringing the same mixture to the summer months.
It's certainly no 'Scream,' but it does play with the audience's expectations in some novel ways. However, the final reveal is seriously derivative of Edgar Wright's fantastic cop comedy 'Hot Fuzz,' which lessens its impact. Otherwise, it's a slasher with some grizzly kills and some very irritating characters, ones that make frustrating decisions too often.
Based on the novel of the same name by Adam Cesare, it follows high school student Quinn (Katie Douglas) and her father (Aaron Abrams) as they relocate to the small town of Kettle Springs. The quaint town has fallen on hard times in the wake of a factory fire destroying its main industry, and things get even worse when a sinister clown named Frendo starts stalking Quinn and her new pals.
Watch on Shudder from August 8
If my social media feeds are any indication, Pedro Pascal fatigue appears to be sweeping the internet. However, if you're not suffering from this strange phenomenon, you'll be pleased to see 'Freaky Tales' is heading to HBO Max this week after a limited theatrical release back in April.
This anthology action-comedy is split into four interconnected chapters and focuses on real historical events that took place during 1987 in Oakland, California. These individual stories focus on an eclectic cast of characters from an NBA star to a corrupt cop, a female rap duo to a group of teenage punks.
Also featuring Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Ben Mendelsohn, Angus Cloud and a small role for America's surrogate father, Tom Hanks, 'Freaky Tales' was embraced by critics and audiences alike. It currently holds a particularly strong 89% viewer score on Rotten Tomatoes.

This Critically Panned Book Adaptation Is A Top Movie On Netflix Right Now
'My Oxford Year' is currently one of the top movies on Netflix, according to the platform's public ranking system. The romance film, based on Julia Whelan's 2018 novel, follows an ambitious American woman (Sofia Carson) who sets out for the University of Oxford in England to fulfill a childhood dream and ends up falling for a charming local (Corey Mylchreest). Some critics had less-than-thrilling things to say about the movie, noting its cookie-cutter characters, emotionally hollow plot and uninteresting adaptation of Whelan's text. You can read HuffPost's review of the film here. Read on for more trending movies across streaming services, including HBO Max, AmazonPrime Video and Peacock. And if you want to stay informed about all things streaming and entertainment, subscribe to the Culture Catchall newsletter. 'Final Destination Bloodlines' The latest installment of 'Final Destination' is now available to stream, and it's currently the top movie on HBO Max. The sixth movie in the grisly horror franchise takes audiences back to the very beginning, as Death's twisted ways plague a college student (Kaitlyn Santa Juana) with a violent, recurring nightmare from her grandmother's past. She must then track down the one person who can stop the vicious cycle and save her family from Death. 'War of the Worlds' 'War of the Worlds,' a sci-fi thriller starring Ice Cube and Eva Longoria, is currently the top movie on Prime Video. Based on H. G. Wells' legendary 1898 novel, the film is described as a 'fresh take' on the familiar tale about a gargantuan invasion that's 'filled with present-day themes of technology, surveillance and privacy,' according to the synopsis. The cast also includes Iman Benson, Michael O'Neill, Clark Gregg, Henry Hunter Hall, Devon Bostick and Andrea Savage. 'Borderline' The top movie on Peacock right now stars Samara Weaving in a twisted tale about an obsessive fan. 'Borderline,' which hit theaters in March, centers on a '90s pop superstar (Weaving) whose home is invaded by a helplessly romantic sociopath (Ray Nicholson) who believes they're meant to be married. Jimmie Fails, Alba Baptista and Eric Dane also star in the film. If you're looking for other films to watch, check out our What We're Watching blog. Related... Netflix just added a blockbuster action-comedy movie with John Cena — and viewers disagree with the critics
Netflix regularly offers a second chance to movies that struggled to find a large audience the first time around, and that's definitely the case with the 2023 action-comedy flop 'Freelance.' This $40 million blockbuster stars John Cena and Alison Brie, and was a box office misfire when it landed in theatres almost two years ago. It only managed to claw back around a quarter of its sizeable budget and seemed destined to be forgotten in a sea of similar summer movies. That was until it was added to Netflix U.S. as part of the service's first wave of new additions for August. Just a few days later, 'Freelance' has found its way into the platform's top 10 most-watched list. It currently ranks at number four, but it has its sights set on the top spot, and it certainly has a solid chance of being the flick to finally dethrone 'Happy Gilmore 2.' But here's the wrinkle: 'Freelance' might have deserved its unwanted status as a financial flop. Or at least, it does if you listen to critics, who were far from impressed with the formulaic action-comedy. Viewers tell a different story, praising it for offering plenty of "fun' and 'entertainment.' Curious to know more? Here's the full scoop on 'Freelance,' and why viewers and critics disagree on this John Cena-fronted slice of action-packed summer escapism. Mason Pettits (John Cena) is a former special forces operative, now working a dead-end job and struggling to co-parent his young daughter. Needing an injection of excitement in his mundane day-to-day, he takes a job working private security for a disgraced journalist (Alison Brie). The mission is to provide protection for the reporter as she travels to the (fictional) South American country of Paldonia to interview the country's ruthless dictator (Juan Pablo Raba). But soon after arriving in the region, a military coup breaks out and Mason must spring into action. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Now on the run in the jungle, this unlikely trio is forced to work together to survive with enemy forces closing in, but their toughest obstacle may be finding a way to tolerate each other. It's not especially uncommon for critics and viewers to disagree, but 'Freelance' represents one of the largest discrepancies in reception between the two camps I've seen in ages. Starting with the professional critics, 'Freelance' holds a miserable 10% score on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. The site's critics' summary is particularly cutting: 'Much like a real-life 'Freelance' gig, this sodden action comedy offers no benefits.' Ouch! There's an oppressive nothingness to 'Freelance.' No romance. No comedy. No action,' said Brian Tallerico of awarding the movie a mere half a star (out of four). While Cath Clarke of the Guardian was equally unimpressed, giving the movie only a single star. 'Brie and Cena look lifeless and blank-faced; they've got no chemistry, and the objectionable dynamics of him manfully rescuing her shrieking from the clutches of the bad guys on repeat feel like a satire of the genre – which this isn't,' said Clarke in their very negative review. However, it seems like the majority of viewers didn't share these pessimistic takes on 'Freelance.' Looking again at Rotten Tomatoes, the movie's audience score is a relatively respectable 78%. While viewers on average tend to be kinder than critics, this gap is still noticeably large, and it suggests that viewers were able to enjoy the action-packed ride. Recent user reviews on RT call the movie 'cheesy, but a lot of fun' and 'full of awesome ongoing action.' John Cena is singled out for praise quite a lot, with his chemistry with Alison Brie also noted as a highlight. Of course, not every viewer was so positive; one review notes that 'this is one of the few times I agree with the critics' score over the audience.' Perhaps my biggest issue with 'Freelance' is that it feels like a cheap copy of 'The Lost City,' a tonally and visually similar action-comedy released 12 months earlier. So, 'Freelance' is basically a worse version of a blockbuster movie I'd already seen. Which isn't a great poster quote. Now, if you're just looking for a light-and-breezy summer romp, you might get some enjoyment from 'Freelance.' Even if the subject matter, which includes a cruel dictator and a military coup, seems serious on the surface, 'Freelance's' tone is always kept light. It's a movie where the jokes flow freely, and the main characters never feel in any true danger. There are undoubtedly flaws here. The story is derivative, the characters are thinly fleshed out and the action sequences are extremely pedestrian. It's certainly not a movie I'd have advised you to rush out to your nearest multiplex to see. However, its arrival on Netflix lowers the barrier to entry considerably. Making a recommendation a little more palatable. It's by no means a flick that deserves to be at the top of your Netflix watchlist, and if you do opt to skip it, trust me, you're not missing out on a masterpiece. But if you're looking for a simple summer watch, it'll do in a pinch. Just be sure to keep your expectations firmly in check. Alternatively, if you're looking for some new to Netflix options that don't come with a string of caveats, here are the best new additions to the streaming service library I'm adding to my watchlist this month, including one of the most iconic summer blockbusters in Hollywood history.
