'Ball bounces like a rabbit'

BBC News4 days ago

Paris St-Germain manager Luis Enrique has criticised the pitches at the Club World Cup and said the "ball bounced like a rabbit" during his side's win against the Seattle Sounders. The match was played at Seattle's Lumen Field, home of MLS side the Sounders and NFL team the Seattle Seahawks, with the stadium's artificial turf replaced with a temporary hybrid grass for the tournament. The Spaniard says football's world governing body Fifa need to "bear in mind" the quality of match and training pitches if it wants the Club World Cup to be "the most high-level competition in the world"."I wouldn't imagine an NBA court full of holes," the 55-year-old said after his side won 2-0 to secure top spot in Group B in the tournament, which is being solely hosted in the United States."What I really care about is the state of the field of play, and I say this on the day we've won."The ball bounces almost like if it were jumping around like a rabbit."
PSG won the Champions League at the end of May with a dominant victory over Inter Milan in Munich to complete a European and domestic treble.Enrique admitted his team have had to adjust the way they play since their arrival in the US because of pitch conditions."Lumen Field is an example, it used to be artificial turf and now it is natural grass and they have to water it by hand - they did so at half-time but the field was dry again in 10 minutes," he added. "For our game this a problem. It's very different to European pitches. The grass is different and therefore it is not so easy to have the same smoothness to play our style - but we did adapt well and we're very happy."
Concerns for the World Cup
There are fewer than 12 months before the Fifa World Cup takes place across Canada, Mexico and United States.Real Madrid's Jude Belligham also criticised the pitches at the Club World Cup after his side's 3-1 win over Pachuca."The pitches aren't great at all. It holds up the ball, the ball barely bounces," said the England midfielder."It's tough on the knees as well. Hopefully, there's someone who will look at that going into the World Cup next year."Five of the venues from this year - Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Hard Rock Stadium, MetLife Stadium, Lincoln Financial Field and Lumen Field - will also host World Cup matches. All five are used for NFL stadiums and use artificial turf but will have real grass installed in time for the World Cup to meet Fifa requirements. The Club World Cup is not the first time the standard of pitches in the US have caused problems.Players were critical of conditions at last summer's Copa America, with Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez saying the field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium was a "disaster" following a win over Canada.Tournament organiser Conmebol defended the pitches, with director of competitions Fredirico Nantes saying "the grass in Atlanta posed absolutely no threat".The stadium will host eight matches at the World Cup next summer, including a semi-final.
The state of the pitches is the latest problem that has been raised at the Club World Cup.There have been concerns about the weather throughout the competition, with extreme heat causing problems for the players.Borussia Dortmund substitutes watched the first half of their win over Mamelodi Sundowns from the dressing room because of the temperature, with their manager Niko Kovac saying conditions were "like a sauna".Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has said his side have struggled to train in Philadelphia, as temperatures reached 37C. BBC Sport has contacted Fifa for comment.

MMA referee screams at doctors to help as former UFC star carried out of cage after sickening kick to testicles

A REFEREE screamed for help from a doctor after a former UFC star crumpled in agony from a kick to the testicles. Stricken Alexander Romanov had to be carried from the cage on a stretcher after just his second Professional Fighters League (PFL) match. 5 5 5 The Moldovan, aka King Kong, was once a top UFC heavyweight prospect. But the 34-year-old switched to a different Mixed Martial Art earlier this year. And he was closing in on a PFL heavyweight title shot when a sickening blow sent him reeling. Romanov was taking on Russian Valentin Moldavsky, 33, in Chicago. And his eye-watering fate came as early as the opening round. Romanov had been struggling to seriously trouble Moldavsky, despite landing a few of his renowned slam takedowns. And when the younger man got up, he put on enough pressure to leave King Kong tiring. Little more than 30 seconds were left in the first of the three five-minute rounds when the distressing moment arrived. The pair were grasping each other on the ropes when Romanov delivered a knee to his opponent. 5 Moldavsky returned the blow in kind - but accidentally went too low. Romanov instantly slumped to the floor, holding his groin - while his rival protested his innocence. Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford in another twist as UFC boss Dana White says he IS promoting super-fight The ref yelled for medical aid as Romanov was in obvious agony and fight fans looked on worried. Meanwhile, Moldavsky sunk to his knees, with his head down - apparently in rueful reflection The cage-side doctor dashed over to treat the stricken giant. And the doc soon confirmed the inevitable - that Romanov would be unable to continue. The 18st 13lbs wrestler was then taken away on a stretcher. It meant the bout - a PFL heavyweight tournament semi-final - was ruled a "no contest". Romanov had dazzled when winning his only other PFL fight in May, beating 40-year-old American Timothy May by submission. It left the East European well placed for a title shot - until a badly placed knee in his very next fight. 5

Forgotten Chelsea man could make dream transfer move after losing squad number

Chelsea spent £45million on Joao Felix less than a year ago but the forward was loaned out to AC Milan for the second half of last season and he appears to have no future at Stamford Bridge Chelsea flop Joao Felix could be offered a homecoming to Benfica after being stripped of his squad number at Stamford Bridge. Felix, 25, was loaned out to AC Milan for the second half of last season, scoring just three goals in 21 appearances. Milan have no interest in signing the Portugal international on a permanent basis, with Chelsea having paid a cool £45million for him last summer. After being left out of Enzo Maresca's 28-man squad for the Club World Cup in the USA and losing his No. 14 squad number to new signing Dario Essugo, Felix finds himself searching for a new club. ‌ At Benfica, the forward could go back to where it all started before he was sold to Atletico Madrid for an eye-watering £113m in 2019. It was in Madrid where his career began to spiral, having been one of the most coveted talents in world football as a teenager. ‌ Benfica are now willing to offer him a return, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola. It's said that the Primeira Liga giants are weighing up a €31m (£26.5m) bid. But agreeing a transfer fee is just one part of the equation. Felix still has a massive six years remaining on his Chelsea contract which reportedly sees him earn £130,000 per week. Face-to-face negotiations could take place as soon as Saturday evening, as Chelsea face Benfica in the last 16 of Club World Cup. Felix was somewhat of a silver lining for Chelsea during his loan spell in the second half of the 2022-23 season, playing under Graham Potter and latterly Frank Lampard, as the Blues endured a nightmare campaign. Following his move to Milan in February, it was suggested that Maresca wasn't fully behind his return to Stamford Bridge. But the Blues boss was clear when asked directly if he wanted to sign 25-year-old. ‌ "Absolutely yes, if Joao was here it's because I wanted to sign Joao," Maresca stated. "I don't know about the future, it's complicated to talk about the future. "For me, it's just about now and the reason why Joao left is because of his desire is to get more minutes. Here, since we started, he struggled to get minutes, and he wants to leave because he wants to play more minutes, it's no more than that."
