Heavy Rains Lash Himachal Pradesh; 37 Dead, Rs 400 Crore In Damages Reported

New Delhi: Torrential monsoon rains have severely disrupted life across Himachal Pradesh, leaving at least 37 people dead and causing property damage worth over Rs 400 crore, according to the State Disaster Management Authority. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain alert for the state until July 7, warning of continued heavy rainfall in the coming days. In its latest update, the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA), along with the Revenue Department, confirmed widespread destruction across several districts, with Mandi emerging as the worst-affected. Search, rescue, and relief efforts are underway, particularly in the Thunag subdivision of Mandi, where blocked roads, collapsed electricity and water systems, and stranded vehicles have paralyzed local life. 'Roads are blocked, electricity and water supply have been hit, and vehicle movement has been severely impacted. Senior officials are stationed there. PWD engineers are overseeing road restoration, while the Director of Operations of the Electricity Board and the Chief Engineer of Jal Shakti are also present in Mandi,' said DC Rana, Special Secretary of the State Disaster Management Authority and Revenue Department. The state has officially recorded losses of over Rs 400 crore, though officials believe the true extent of the damage is likely much higher. 'We have recorded over Rs 400 crore in losses so far, as entered in our system. But the actual damage is likely to be much higher,' said Rana. 'Our primary focus at the moment is on search, rescue, and restoration. Detailed damage assessment will take time,' he added. The human toll is alarming. A total of 37 deaths have been attributed to rain-related incidents during the ongoing monsoon season, with another 26 deaths reported from road accidents in the same period. In Mandi district alone, 40 people remain missing. 'A village in Mandi has been devastated. A relief camp has been set up and food packets were air-dropped yesterday by the Indian Air Force,' Rana stated. The state is also grappling with widespread infrastructure damage: 250 roads remain closed, over 500 electricity distribution transformers are non-functional, and around 700 drinking water schemes have been disrupted. Emergency response teams from the local administration, police, Home Guards, SDRF, and central agencies, including the NDRF, are involved in ongoing relief efforts. Rana emphasized the broader environmental concerns underlying the crisis. "These events are a consequence of global warming and climate change. Himachal is not untouched by these impacts,' he said. In Shimla, the heavy rains have disrupted everyday life, especially for school children. Flooded classrooms and the threat of falling trees have created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty. 'It's raining heavily. Water is entering our classrooms, our clothes, and our books are soaked. Our teachers are telling us it's better to stay at home. Whether we attend school or not makes no difference right now because everything is wet and there's a sense of fear,' said Tanuja Thakur, a student from Shimla. 'Our school is surrounded by trees. There is always a fear that a tree could fall. Thankfully, we are safe for now,' she added. With the IMD predicting more rainfall in the coming days, authorities remain on high alert, prioritizing rescue operations, infrastructure repairs, and continued monitoring of vulnerable areas across the state.

Himachal Pradesh: 63 dead, ₹400 Crore worth property damaged due to heavy rains

As many as 63 people have died while ₹ 400 crore worth of property has been damaged due to incessant rains in Himachal Pradesh, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain alert until July 7, warning of continued heavy showers in the hill state. The Thunag sub-division of Mandi district has been the worst-hit so far, with roads impassable and essential services such as electricity and water supply affected. "We have recorded over ₹ 400 crore in losses so far, as entered in our system. But the actual damage is likely to be much higher. Our primary focus at the moment is on search, rescue, and restoration," DC Rana, Special Secretary of the State Disaster Management Authority and Revenue Department, said. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's Media Advisor Naresh Chauhan said: '63 dead, 40 missing due to cloudbursts and other rain-related disasters in the state.' In Mandi alone, 40 people are reportedly missing. On Thursday, he death toll in the cloudburst and flash flood-related incidents in Mandi has mounted to 14, officials said. Relief camps have been set up, and food packets were air-dropped by the Indian Air Force to affected areas, officials said. More than 150 houses, 106 cattle sheds, 31 vehicles, 14 bridges and several roads were damaged in the calamities. A total of 164 cattle perished, while 402 people, 348 of them in Mandi, were rescued, and five relief camps have been set up, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said. The inclement weather has sent 246 roads, 145 in Mandi district, out of bounds for traffic, and disrupted 404 transformers and 784 water supply schemes in the past few days in the state, the SEOC said. The Manali-Keylong road was blocked following floods in a drain near the Solang Nallah. The traffic in the area has been diverted to Rohtang Pass. A massive landslide was reported in Dhalli in the suburbs of Shimla, where a chunk of hill came down sliding. No casualty was reported there. According to reports, about half a dozen houses were left in a precarious state after a four-lane road embankment on the Kaithlighat-Dhalli stretch collapsed in Lindidhar village, damaging a large number of apple trees. The safety wall had collapsed earlier also, but no steps were taken to bolster it, locals alleged, and blamed the National Highway Authority of India for the incident. Due to road closures and poor network connectivity, field coordination remains a challenge, and Intra Circle Roaming (ICR) has been activated by the Department of Telecommunications DoT in the Thunag area. Apart from this, ISATs have also been mobilised to the area for emergency communication, he said. The Jal Shakti department has activated gravity-based small schemes after chlorination to ensure a safe drinking water supply in some villages. Two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and police and home guards are engaged in search and rescue operations in Mandi. A total of 246 kits of ration have been air dropped in Thunag and Janjheli, Sukhu said. Addressing a press conference in Mandi, Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Jairam Thakur said that his constituency, Seraj, has been the worst-hit, with 500 houses suffering damage. We have recorded over ₹400 crore in losses so far, but the actual damage is likely to be much higher.

As rain batters Uttarakhand, CM Pushkar Dhami on Thursday announced that the Char Dham Yatra will temporary remain suspended. The Badrinath Highway is also blocked due to debris falling from the hill near Nandprayag and Bhanerpani. Heavy Rain Disrupts Life In Uttarakhand Due to continuous heavy downpour in the state, the Yamunotri Highway has remained closed for the past five days as debris has blocked the roads. As a result, nearly two dozen villages have lost connection with the tehsil and district headquarters. Meanwhile, in Rishikesh, efforts are underway to remove encroachments from roads in preparation for the upcoming Kawad Yatra. In Chamoli district, the Badrinath National Highway has been disrupted at three locations — Pipalkoti, Nandprayag, and Umatta — due to landslides. Work is currently in progress to clear the debris and restore traffic flow. The mountain regions have been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall since last night, worsening the situation further. Kedarnath Road Blocked On Thursday, the Uttarakhand government said that the road to Kedarnath was also blocked due to debris and stones falling in the Munkatia Sliding Zone under the Sonprayag area. 'The Yatra will resume once the road is cleared", Rudraprayag police said in their X post.
